    I completely understand peoples issues with the art style and with releasing games in early access at all. But, as a person who works in game dev, I have a ton of respect for the team for what they're doing. Typically, polish of art is one of the absolute last things done before release, and I get the impression from the team that they are putting the game in early access specifically to get the players input on what is liked and what isnt so they can tweak and polish the things players actually want to see. I'd prefer that attitude 1000000% over whatever tf the sims team has been doing these last few years.

    People complain about lack of visual consistency when it comes to LBY, specially the characters, but that’s the price to pay when you have *so much customization.* You can have shiny characters and other that are very mutted.
    For me, the shadows need to be tunned. They are *too harsh/dark.*
    I also believe that we are just *too used to the sims 4 aesthetics…* which are very different, way softer, if you know what I mean.

    • @augusto7681
      @augusto7681 Před rokem +43

      The problem isnt realism, the graphics look unfinished. It remind me of Second Life from 2003. The way the eviroment cast shadow, the unusual mix of high and low poly objects, blurry edges. Thats not related to customization.
      Take for example GTA V, the graphic are beautiful and cinematic. Thats the level of realism people expect in 2023. If they cant achieve that just change for something more stylized/abstract without looking cartoony. Maybe like sims 3/4 with alpha cc.
      Right now the game look unfinished because its unfinished, I hope they create a more complex light setting and refine all the models before full release.

      @@augusto7681yeah it's giving 2005 IMVU. I understand why it looks like crap rn, but it still fundamentally looks like crap to the extent that I don't know if I will ever like the art style, no matter how polished it looks. It just isn't my vibe, personally.

    • @PDD555
      @PDD555 Před rokem +4

      It's just that it's more difficult to have good graphics when they are realistic. As we're very aware of how reality looks like, it's easy to find things that don't correspond or look off. That doesn't happen as much with cartoony styles

    Early Access is necessary to get funds to expand the development process. It's totally fine when indie devs do it, but becomes scummy when big established companies do it. So I definitely understand your concern.

    • @Theescapist_87
      @Theescapist_87 Před rokem +5

      @@jaybee4288Paradox is nowhere near as big as EA. Cities Skylines had like 8 people on their dev team when it was first made and the Paradox Tectonic studio is brand new. People need to remember that this is a huge venture for Paradox Interactive to be delving into. They probably made the game EA so they could gauge two things. How well will it sell since this is the first life sim they have ever made and that means throwing lots of money and resources into something that may not have a good ROI. Second, to gauge feedback so that they make this game stand on its own in a way the community wants it to.
      Also I find it really interesting that people have zero problems spending years throwing their money into a game with no release date in sight, but raise eyebrows at spending $30 on a game that's going to be released in EA with a set date. Or better yet throwing $50+ dollars into the Sims 4 at launch, when it may as well have been EA with how little content it had.

      @@annakopyl269 That's not really the issue. It's moreso the implementation of the shine. The characters look flat, no highlighted areas, no undertones and other skin features that make them look defined or sculpted. Thus, the shine looks pretty much the same on all parts of the body, flat and plasticy. The Sliders are at the very least a band aid solution.
      Granted, I am comparing them to Skyrim Mod's Diffuse, Normal Map, and Specular Textures, so it may be too far of a reach. But tbf, The Sims 4, although considered having a "cartoonish" artstyle by many, has a more defined skin texture than LBY as of now.

    As long a the game is coded properly and as moddable as they advertised, I’m not worried by the visuals. I’m confident they will greatly improve until release in a few years. I’d rather have the framework for customization than an aesthetically pleasing shell. Things like different heights, open worlds and intelligent A.I. are much more important than looks. Those can be easily modded. No mod will ever make TS4 an open world, and different heights will always have clipped animations.
    I do hope the gameplay is entertaining. That is all that matters.

It honestly would be better if they just heavily reduced or got rid of the glossiness altogether. Human skin is not glossy like that, it has some reflective properties, but mostly its subjected to subsurface scattering, so it looks very smooth. Both their skin and hair look greasy and plastic-y.

    I’ve worked in the game industry for a solid year and to me this looks more like they didn’t hide any of the unfinished stuff we usually TRY to hide while we’re working on things during early previews/early access. I think the thing that makes it so ‘wonky’ is mostly the UI that needs to be arted, and the shaders/assets need polishing. I think it’s precisely the right time for early access for this game actually, as they add more and more gameplay features like jobs, events, etc and receive feedback on what users want, they can balance the experience. One of my fav games, Subnautica, did that. It was amazing to experience the addition of the new gameplay elements as they came out, the biomes expending, etc etc.
    Basically this looks like a very strong team of engineers who will eventually finish dinging up the engine so the whole thing can be properly put together with all the necessary polish!

    Satch, you echo my thoughts exactly. I really want Life By You to work too. BUT after that trailer that promised SOOOOO much and an initially interesting start with the conversation system, all they've shown us so far is just generic stuff like the character maker, house building and editing, more of the character maker, some plant watering and hugging, some driving (which was cool) and AGAIN more of the character maker (as if we didn't see the first couple ones - there was nothing new in that last video). Sure, these are important in a life sim, but almost every game has them, and every life sim will definitely have them. This stuff Life By You has shown us so far are just ho-hum generic expected stuff. There's nothing new here. When the initial announcement came out we were promised great things, then they just totally showed us generic things we've already seen - and with the character maker, needlessly over and over again. Life By You, show us some of the UNIQUE things you promised! Show us GAMEPLAY!

But if enough substantial, rich gameplay systems aren't there or were being developed and it's all barebones or non-existant, then what will people use to excuse the average graphics? I don't know why, but I trust Paralives & its team a lot more. Maybe it's their transparency from early on, or maybe it's the fact that they are beholden to Patrons and are thus a bit more accountable & less "untouchable," but it feels like a much more solid game already. It's so much less nebulous than LBY. The aesthetic is solid, it feels homey and cozy, and the gameplay we've seen so far looks amazing to me. They have made a lot of promises, and while I'm skeptical, I think that they're trying their best to deliver on what they reasonably can. While I'm a bit impatient, I understand that game development takes a lot of time. A lot of people think it will never come out, because it's been in development since 2018..? but that's only 5 years. Games can take upwards of 10 years to develop, especially those as complex and as feature-rich as a life-sim. I'm willing to believe Paralives will come eventually, and that when it does, I hope it will be a solid entry in the life sim genre.

    Regarding LBY... I'm not quite ready yet to throw the towel into the ring. It might be one of those games that launches quite poorly but continuously develops and turns quite nice a long way down the line, but... The quality of their marketing is so poor and so many weird and downright bad decisions have been made, that I am no longer confident that they will be able to deliver a reasonably polished product before 2025. There's only 15 people in the team, apparently, including Rod Humble, a community manager and a marketeer, they're very conservative on extra hires because that'll cut into their personal profits and there's just so, so, so much (!!!) that needs to be fixed. I honestly don't see how they're going to pull that off with such a small team.

    I've been playing Cities Skylines 1, and the weather is DLC there but the new Cities Skylines 2 will have it in the base game.
    So for LBY, I'd prefer them nailing down the fundamental core gameplay for the release.
    I really fear and don't want LBY to have hollow gameplay. I want it to succeed.
    So I won't be mad if Cats/Dogs & Seasons come later as a DLC if it meant gameply hit the homerun.
    Better for LBY to be good game on launch and become a hit w/o base game Cats & Dogs & Seasons, and later get a second installment with DLCs in the base game like Cities Skylines, rather than for it to have those only for the game to not be fully polished, and get the franchise discontinued for not being big enough.

    First of all, DLCs in a life simulation game will always be bad (unless it's just adding clothes or furniture, but even then) because no matter what you lock behind a paywall, unless it's supernatural, it should be in the base game. I mean, it _is_ a life simulator, isn't it? So locking pets (no matter what kind), cars, jobs, and any gameplay that is natural for us like weather is just... well, bad.
    I have some worries about the game. It's Paradox. I think most people expect the game to not have a lot of DLC, just like Paralives has been promising they won't have a lot of it. But it's Paradox. LBY will most likely have a LOT of DLC. Look at their games, especially the more successful ones, like Cities: Skylines, Stellaris, Crusader Kings. They have DLC. A _lot_ of them. And given that they are already trying to take money from us with Early Access, I'm 100% sure there _will_ be a ton of DLC. But that's not my only concern. I think the Devs are overlooking some things with this "realism" aspect. For example, the graphics and the overall image of the game. There is nothing that makes you look at a screenshot of it and immediately realize what game it's from. The graphics are extremely generic (kind of ugly too); the name is too complicated and nothing recognizable like The Sims or Paralives, and when I look at it I have to remind myself what it's about, because it could be easily mistaken for Idk a fitness app (lol). And then, because the name is also kind of random, the characters won't have a recognizable name. They're just... humans.
    But the biggest problem, well... the age. The characters will have number for ages, not just titles like adults or toddlers. BUT. Since we will still have stages of life, and they have said they won't be adding tweens, possibly not young adults either, AND humans will go from adults to elders elders, I assume the humans will age similarly to The Sims, and all age groups will have a shared default body. That being said, is a 13 y/o going to look like a 9 y/o kid, or like a 17 y/o teen? What about a 19 y/o, are they going to look like a 17 y/o or a 30 y/o? Or what about 50 y/o??? Will they look like a 30 y/o or a 70 y/o??? Appearances aren't the only problem neither. Personality-wise, a 13 y/o will be very different from a 9/yo and a 17 y/o. That's around the age where puberty really hits you. The age when you start crushing on people, growing body hair, acne, moods, entering relationships that only last a maximum of 1 month. It won't work. It just won't. You can't say you want to add realism to your game, and not even consider adding very much real life stages.
    Those are just things I can remember right now, but I'm sure there's more. Also, one thing I fear about Paralives is that it will be PG-13 to the extend where they said "Paras won't be too mean" and we won't have any realistic deaths (possibly not even diseases), so I'm just afraid it will be as boring, easy, and vanilla as The Sims 4. So I don't know how to feel about this new age of life simulators, but I'd say Paralives is our best bet.

      @@thesimslover82884 well, yes, and it is in the sims too. That's pretty much the typical realistic death stuff for Pg-13 games. Ok, alright... but we will also not have unrealistic deaths (for instance, eaten by cow plant, maybe paras won't even die from being attacked by flies!). So I'm just worried the game will be like TS4, where dying is an actual challenge because of how hard it is to do. Especially when they will limit it so we won't have any "weird" deaths.

    It would be cool if a life sim made a character customizer where you can pick presets for each area of the body. And by that i mean you could choose a short/long/medium torso or neck, arms, or legs. And like the presets you pick would affect their height. I think it would be cool because usually height sliders just shrink the character and they look weird and disproportionate. If you could choose short legs with short arms and like a short or medium torso, then the character would look more realistic. I also know NOTHING about making video games and animations but i feel like it might make it easier to work with a few different height variations than a full on height slider

    Ok, so again, as I have so many times whenever a youtuber mentions that "it needs polish" in the 22 minute video that is like two before this one, they say straight out that they are working on polishing things. One guy specifically said it was his job to go in and polish the hair. They showed changing the length of the legs and arms and torso, so if you don't like the way she made this "human" then you will make yours differently so its proportioned the way you want. That's just how she likes it.
    Honestly, I really don't care what anyone else thinks. I got the early access for my birthday and the more I see the more excited I get. Outerwear is a jacket or coat on top of regular clothes, that is a HUGE difference. Oh! In the video about needs, there is a quick look at his inventory and it had knitting needles and yarn! And in the video showing a conversation at the very end there is a line where they can ask about getting a pet and what kind of pet would be compatible for them. I get seriously excited by everything I see.
    I wasn't this excited for Sims 4. For Sims 2 and 3? Yes, but not Sims 4. And the only ones I can remember being partially near this excited for was the Paranormal pack and Cottage Living. Then they borked Paranormal. Cottage Living works, but I kinda feel it is tainted by all the others that DON'T. But this? I am excited for LBY. We're not going on vacation this year so I'm thinking hard on taking that first week it comes out off so I can seriously explore it. I feel like I am spoiled by great early access releases that have a lot of gameplay even in an early state (e.g. Vampire Survivors, Brotato, Big Ambitions, etc) and it ruined my expectations for future early access titles. To be honest, right now I see LBY as alpha rather than beta with so much stuff that is related towards the "sandbox" or customization stuff, while gameplay such as quests or scenario stuff are still unclear. I still have my hopes that it would still become a decent game given the track record of games published through Paradox despite having many DLCs, but people should calm down their hype as it is still at best in alpha. It's most likely they're rushing this because of Sims 5 and they probably want to make a statement out of it. I don't mind them polishing the game a bit more before putting it on early access. I guess if they want to release it in early access, the bare minimum they could do is release a world with actual lore and quests attached to it or add scenarios like most simulation/tycoon games do. I don't want this to fail badly but it seems like I am having more and more reservations as the early access release is drawing near.

If LBY becomes a good platform for mods, most of the issues people are worried about right now will be solved by the community. This part of their entire focus excites me personally the most. Just look at Skyrim as an example - not only it's still alive with a large player base, but there are so many mods out there that anyone can make Skyrim into their own, unique looking game with a ton of tailored content just for their flavor of it. A life sim equivalent to that would make many Sims fans forget that the Sims exist.
