The trailer for the MCU's Samuel L Jackson-led adaptation of Secret Invasion just dropped. Instead of speculating as to the ways the MCU might take inspiration from the comic-book origins of this story, though, this video looks back to another, previous adaptation of the tale - that of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. What lessons can the MCU's version take from this previous, animated success? How might the live-action version differ from its antecedents? These questions, among others, are the ones we're pondering today.
(Oh, hey, also? Do you guys think it's weird for Nick Fury that Talos' human form is still the old Shield boss he replaced and presumably murdered like 30 years ago?)

Secret Invasion is an upcoming American television miniseries created by Kyle Bradstreet for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics storyline of the same name - the comic book crossover storyline that ran through a self-titled eight-issue limited series and several tie-in books published by Marvel Comics from April through December 2008. The story involves a subversive, long-term invasion of Earth by the Skrulls, a group of alien shapeshifters who have secretly replaced many superheroes in the Marvel Universe with impostors over a period of years, prior to the overt invasion. Marvel's promotional tagline for the event was "Who do you trust?". In Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, comic-book superheroes -- including Hulk, Iron Man and Thor -- join forces to become the Avengers as they fight villains who have escaped from the Vault, the Cube, the Big House and the Raft. Among the villains the Avengers battle are Red Skull, Grim Reaper, Wonder Man and Cobra.

Here is the problem I don't think you fully understand the MCU . It's the problem with a lot of CZcamsr and casual fans or comic fans who complain about captain America civil war. They are so busy focused on the trees they don't see the forests.
      Especially phase 4
The infinity saga was 23 chapters and played the same as any book who used the 3 structure format over the chapters . People don't understand phase 4 is act 1 of a new saga a new book . These movie names are nothing more than chapter titles they are actually adapting the comic each chapter has a purpose for the over all story.
Why did the Avengers lose in infinity war ?
Civil war is the answer, they were unprepared . Tony retired from building a suit of armour around the world , Cap and his team were on the run and helping people at the same time. Wanda and vision were left vulnerable because of this 2 of the most powerful character in the MCU at that moment had no leadership. Why did Steve decided not to sign. He's character was established in the first movie as selfless, he believed no man left behind when he disobey order to rescue that POW.
Avengers assemble Nick fury hides the true nature of the tesseract and building weapon breach of trust from the government, winter soldier Steve is effected by hydra inflation another breach of trust, aswell as learning a fallen soldiers is still alive and needs help. Age of Ultron Tony breaks his trust by Developing Ultron which.
This is why Steve doesn't sign the accords and why he doesn't trust Tony as much.
Tony's reason was age of Ultron guilt from it, the mum who's son was killed . That Knock Tony off his high horse which was built up over the course of his 5 appearance.
This is how the MCU format it's story telling.
Secret invasion is just the chapter name .
It started in Captain Marvel, but this is more complicated as it's different factions of the Skrull wanting different things. Now if I am right Secret Invasion will be Val's ticket to the Thunderbolts. This saga has alot of moving parts .act 1 is alot longer than .

One of my favorite facts on EMH is that Shrulltain America, past when he encounters the real Cap, doesn't have his head wings standing up like the real guy. It's such a small detail, but it shows even these aliens can screw up and potentially blow their cover.

Ik old comment, but one important part about that suit that Skrull Cap had: while the OG cap suit is from Earth-616 main comics, the Skrull suit is from the Earth-1610 Ultimate Marvel comics, a modernised AU, and Captain America in that universe was generally a terrible person, somewhat stupid and bigoted, rude, and not above using children in an orphanage as human shields against a supervillain. So the obviously evil Captain America Skrull suit is a jab at that, and even Skrull Cap acts somewhat like the Ultimate version.

Because it does have the potential to be something beyond great. This story can put the characters in extreme situations were they can demonstrate who they really are. Showing distinct Skrull factions and what they are willing to do for their survival, but also their morality and values. And to be honest the mcu didnt really care that much about the hydra twist, agents of shield did. In the series they portrayed how it affected everyone, the sense of betrayal, the tension, the suspense, it kicked off the incredible character journey of every single one of them and changed them forever, made Ward (one of the most bland characters) one of the absolute best Marvel has ever had. Thats the potential Secret Invasion has.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’s version of the Secret Invasion is one of the few times I like a adaptation of a Marvel storyline better than the original, mostly because it felt a lot more personal and connected with the story of the Avengers, rather than the many different Marvel teams that splinter the focus of the story.
While EMH Secret Invasion doesn’t rely on the twists of “who the Skrull is” like the comic version is, (not counting Mockingbird/Veranke) I think that the episode “Who Do You Trust” still works as one of the best episodes of EMH despite the audience already knowing that Cap is a Skrull.
Another Criticism of the show could be that besides a few other characters like Invisible Woman or Madame Viper, no one really important was replaced like in the comic versions, which replaced characters liked Elektra or Hank Pym, but I don’t mind EMH’s changes because I felt that the “surprise reveal” twist hinders character development of those replaced characters.
As for the MCU show, I can’t say much about it, other than the fact that I’m somewhat disappointed that Secret Invasion might be given the smaller-scale conflict than the culmination of a building conflict that culminates in the heroes of the Marvel universe doubting themselves and who they can ultimately trust. It’s also unfortunately likely that MCU’s Secret Invasion might just be a another conflict, while the comics and EMH had Major consequences from that event, like the Dark Reign and the Kree-Skrull War conflict.

We got to see that Victor Von Doom was aware of the Skrull invasion in the first episode of the second season, as the stinger for the end of that episode, which works nicely as a one-two punch with the last episode of season 1. We know Doom has created the technology to detect the Skrulls, and they actually use that to their advantage when they use a method to take Iron Man out of the equation, ironically giving him a real means to identify them in their disguised state in the process because with the final stages of the plan coming to fruition the Skrulls have actually gotten cocky, it's left ambiguous if the Doom that gave Tony the add-on that enables him to detect the Skrulls was genuine or an imposter, but either way they knew Tony would be smart enough to figure out if the scan modulator really was genuine or just a hoax in very short order.
A little something I like about the fake Avengers making a "return" to Earth is when Hawkeye is battling his doppelganger; the two seem pretty evenly matched until Clint literally catches an arrow his duplicate fired at him and fires it right back at his opponent; the Skrull imposter makes a comment about his feat being impossible because no one can be that good, and Clint casually says he his before decking his alien twin. To me, this shows how the Skrulls have flaws in their mimicry; they can't fully duplicate abilities that came mainly from countless hours of practice and honing of one's skills like Clint has; we see some of this a bit with the Skrull Cap, to a bit of lesser degree because of alien technology the Skrulls used to duplicate Steve's memories and transfer those copies to his Skrull doppelganger. If you watch very closely, you can see all of the real Captain America's moves are fluid from years of practice and less hesitation or time thinking before making his move; the Skrull imposter moves are a bit more rigid and almost mechanical like he's making conscious decisions to move his body through what should be Captain America's more fluid instinctual and practiced motions; the fact the animators of EMH actually took the time to animate micro-expressions and minor differences in body movement between the originals and their Skrull imposter counterparts just speaks to the level of talent the artists has in their animation of the series and isn't usually something that you would see animators thinking about, let alone actually taking the time to actually animate.

The part of EMH’s Secret Invasion that hits the hardest for me has always been when Skrull Cap tells Hulk to go back to The Cube, a place it’s been well established Hulk HATES and wants to avoid going back to at all costs. Fuck, they torture him there. It’s probably one of the reasons he stayed on the Avengers, with the protection being a member of the team was supposed to give him. It’s such a big betrayal, especially to me as a giant Hulk fan, and of course Hulk trusts the Skrull when he says they’ll come back for him because as far as he knows he’s CAPTAIN FUCKING AMERICA. And it’s also a brilliant tactical move on the Skrull’s part to get rid of the Avengers’ heaviest hitter, even after the team has splintered. It’s definitely not gonna come to this in the show, but I did want to mention it as it’s such a significant moment in EMH’s adaptation even if it’s not necessarily relevant to this discussion per se.
Also: Having both Cap and Hawkeye alongside 2 other members after the team fractures was a neat callback to Cap’s Kooky Quartet, the second team of Avengers ever in the comics.

Iron Man: Self-described as a futurist, trying to do what's best for the future of humanity, and when presented with the problem of the Skrull invasion, becomes obsessed with solving the problem in unhealthy ways, as Jarvis and Pepper told him.
Wasp: The heart and optimist of the group, she tries to keep it together at all costs because she knows (correctly) that they shouldn't be torn apart by a Skrull invasion, and that the only way to fight them is together. Because of this, she stays in the team even if they are just a "kooky quartet".
Hulk: Throughout the show, people's confidence in the Hulk has been very low, and the other 3 members of the kooky quartet are the most supportive of him throughout the show, especially Cap (which makes his arrest one of the biggest the most heartbreaking moments of the show). So it makes sense that he supports Hawkeye even when it seems obvious that he is the impostor.
Black Panther: Throughout the show, his main interests were always the good of his nation. Of course, he's on the team to show his appreciation to them and to save the world, but in Kang's invasion his duty was to Wakanda, and the same goes here. I feel like it's at this point that the friendship between BP and Hawkeye fragments, as the latter doesn't understand how he can put his friends aside for the good of his nation.
Hawkeye: A very interesting case and somewhat similar to the Hulk (which is why they were instant friends), Hawkeye started out in the series being framed for something he didn't do, being considered a villain even when trying to help, and also being troublesome with why. his personality, as shown by when he rebelled against Fury to attack Hydra. Something I have to say is that the relationship between Cap and Hawkeye is not as strong as it is in the comics, but at least it has been shown on at least 2 occasions that Steve supports Clint, even with his temper. When he begins to be accused by Iron Man and company of being Skrull, he begins to act desperate, mistrusting his team's mistrust and putting them in the situation they ended up in. In the end, the team members who trust him form the quartet.
Ms. Marvel: The case of Carol is interesting since she is the newcomer, and therefore she tries to do what she thinks is best for the team while at the same time trying to carry out orders, but this ends quite badly. It's quite sad to see how Carol is separated from the people she was having a great time with 1 hour ago, but luckily everything improves by the end of the arc.

"The Zygon Invasion" takes place a few years later, and is about the youngsters of that race of shapeshifters, who are... unsatisfied, with only taking human form, and believe that they should be able to live freely as Zygons. I’m not sure if this was actually intentional on the creator’s part, but one detail that I’ve always found to be really clever about EMH’s take on Secret Invasion was having Skrull-Cap be modeled after Cap from the Ultimate comics.
For those not in the know, in the Ultimate Marvel universe, Captain America is portrayed as being
.well
.kind of the biggest asshole imaginable, as is the case for a good majority of other characters featured in those books. And with that portrayal having drawn a *lot* of criticism over the years, I feel that having Skrull-Cap actually be modeled after the version of the character who was written as nothing but a condescending, antagonistic bully, only to then be beaten down and defeated by the *real* Cap in the arc’s climax was genuinely cathartic.

Here's a thought, what if Secret Invasion ends up working as the setup instead of the full narrative? We start with that to provide narrative irony moving forward, get some buildup in later projects (The Marvels seems like a good pick), and bring it all to a head in Secret Wars. I know the comic story of Secret Wars had nothing to do with Skrulls, but with the naming parallels happening I could see the MCU diverting from adding yet another major event (minus significant buildup) if it means bringing the Secret Invasion narrative together

I think a big part of the story is going to be the Younger Brood that were born after Captain Marvel's events hitting back after the Kree took advantage of the chaos of the Blip while Carol was occupied with fighting threats across the universe on her own. I think we MIGHT get the creation of the Super Skrull which may introduce either the whole of the Fantastic Four or maybe a small cameo of someone like Doctor Doom or Sue Storm to call back to the first appearance of the Super Skrull in the comics, but the odds on that happening are probably not as great as you'd think. We might get a small bit of The Leader manipulating the Skrulls going into New World Order, maybe a bit of Harrison Ford, and if the arcs of phase 5 and 6 weren't already fully set up, we could get Dark Reign with Norman Osborn finally being introduced in the Spider-Man Freshman Year show

And here I am, directly from the Doom video.
Lots of good points; I guess I'll never get Warskrulls in live action.....
I did have an interesting take on why the Skrulls are doing this: Security. (rather than the holy crusade they were on in the comics, or just taking over as in EMH)
Assume the Skrulls have been living her as sort of refugees for about 20 years or so, since Captain Marvel. What's happened in that time? Super humans rise up, we get Loki, Ultron, Hydra almost takes over the world, Dark Elves almost remake reality, and then Dormamu almost takes over. And then Thanos. He actually DOES his evil plan, and half of those refugee skrulls, their numbers already drastically reduced, disappear. Sure the Avengers Fixed it, but the also almost lost it all, again.
And then some giant alien shows up? Humanity is playing fast and loose with reality, with powers it can barely understand. They must be controlled, they must slow down this destructive path.
So the Skrulls have a plan. Take over, slow their progress and lead them to a more peaceful path, before they destroy us all.
Then we turn the whole thing into a metaphor for our world, and distrust for authorities and how some people see the only way to save our future is to seize power and force a better future down the rest of our throats. Are the Skrulls a stand in for the Left trying to get the world to attend to social justice and climate change before it all falls apart, or are they the Right trying to get the world to return to the traditional values before society collapses?
    Yes

In my opinion though I think they already kind of messed things up as it is with the Skrulls.
They were always in the Comic Books were quite tyrannical and always trying to do some shady stuff.
Knowing that it made secret invasion very entertaining and interesting. But in the MCU, they basically turn the Skrulls into a group of refugees who were on the run from the Kree.
And then at the end of Spider-Man far from home
. It hinted that Nick fury has given the Skrulls, A purpose as part of a type of S.W.O.R.D organization. But I have them just abruptly decided they want to take over the earth seemed kind of out of place now. But I have been thinking about it..if the Skrulls are anything like humans, not all of them may want peace and tranquility. I mean they were kind of subjugated and killed off by the Kree. So it’s understandable that there might be some bad blood with them and they may feel like they deserve more than just being refugees at this point. I mean basically one of the reasons why Skrulls Conquer planets like earth is because they believe that they are clandestine and deserve it more so than the original inhabitants. So now that they are refugees who have to keep running from planet planet they may feel like earth is too good for the humans and may want to try to take it over. But if that’s the case then there has to be Krulls Who are not on board with the idea and may be trying to help to prevent invasion. Like most races, not every Skrull is bad.
In the original story there was one that was a sleeper agent who had to be on earth for a long time and take on a secret identity so he married a human woman and basically became an adopted father to her son. The problem is that he played the part for so long that eventually he could no longer go back to being who he was. I mean he knew he was a Skrull, The problem is he generally did fall in love with the woman he married and grew to love her son as well. So when it came time for the final invasion he could not do it. Him and a lot of other Skrull who are in the same situation or branded as traders and could not go back to the empire. But surprisingly a lot of them didn’t really care because to them they basically had a family and a planet to live on. That being said though I don’t think they were prepared for the witch hunts that came from Secret invasion. So in the end the same thing could happen to any of the good will Skrulls.

  • @TheRealAdaWong

Secret Invasion is already going to be on a smaller scale if set from Fury’s perspective. Not that it’ll be bad, but I already expect more focus on the character than the plot itself.
This definitely could have used some Secret Avengers foreshadowing, another superhero or two’s experience alongside Fury and the Invasion.

  • @flarestorm9417
    @flarestorm9417 Pƙed rokem +1

One problem the MCU is going to run into is that the timeline of events is so desynced with the comics where these stories originated from. The original Avengers are either dead or retired, and by virtue of using live actors these people don't want to play these roles forever, nor can they. Yes, you can switch out actors, but doing it too much breaks the immersion of the live action media being consumed. You also can't play loose with the timeline or reboot the universe like you can in comic books, so these events are going to run into conflict with one another.
On another point, the MCU is just getting too big and convoluted now. Secret Invasion is something that should be a world changing, but it's being done in a television show. If said show doesn't effect the larger canon it will make the world feel connected in name only. If the show does effect the larger canon it basically makes it impossible for casual viewers to understand it all and have an investment in everything.

I think it’s to do with the fact that more people are getting savvy about the ways cultural products internet with social and political systems more widely. It isn’t just ‘this thing is bad’, it’s ‘this thing may be contributing to harmful parts of our society, and even if we can still enjoy the thing.. it’s better to be aware of its problems than to be ignorant of them’

@@PillarofGarbage dude, the original writer of secret invasion is jewish, it's hard to imagin that antisemitism is what went in his head while writing this. If people, instead of getting angry, would just fact check themselves, we won't ear of duch dumb claims

i personally think the skrulls will be a form of red herring and it will be humans using skrull technology/dna to not only use it for their profit but also to cover their tracks by frsaming skrulls

I love the idea of showing good skrulls vs bad skrulls, that could be a very good way of repressenting the real World too, not every person from this country with terrorist’s is an actuall terrorist, but at the same time most Marvel shows have been pretty disapointing so fare, so my expectations isent relly that High, i mostly hope its not gonna be a major flop.

The biggest fly in the ointment is that they made the Skrull harmless refugees who are fighting for a home, rather than egotistical body snatchers that they were in the comics and EMH.

Thank You SO BLOODY MUCH for mentioning that agents of shield s4 scene. Because it completely showcases the core of what the secret invasion should be. The TENSION that scene has is completely extreme. Watching how fitz's work on the lmd program is basically the cause of the whole infiltration, it's personal and painful for everyone, and they even didnt just do that, because the framework arc started right away and blown our heads up even more. The potential Secret Invasion has is amazing, it can elevate the mcu's storytelling to a whole other level and kickoff a completely new status quo and give us something truly unique. I really do hope they don't miss this opportunity (and for god' sake, bring back Quake, or coulson, or mention Fitzsimmons, or May, or mack, or the kree in any capacity, etc because itd be a huge miss if they didnt give use of any of the amazing things the agents of shield series presented on it's complete run)

I hope it's a bigger threat than it seems in the trailer maybe get a few heroes in the show not all the avengers sense most are either dead or f@cked off somewhere else but maybe we get older cap sense they set him up to be on the sword base in space as well and in the comics he does gain his youth again so who knows maybe they hid the fact that they renewed christ Evan's contract or he's just coming for a come cause a contract is just a promise to show up in so many movies that doesn't mean he can't still show up without a contract
