    In this video I build a 3D printed braiding machine.
    The braiding machine was recreated from old photos, from the early days of braiding machines. The braiding machine works really great. So far I have created about 50m of cord without any problems. The output is 42cm per minute. A 24V DC gear motor drives the machine. 6 bobbin holders are used. A bit tricky was the device for tensioning the single cords. But this works perfectly now. If you change the gear ratio, it is also possible to produce cords with a core.
    All parts are easy to print. Supports are included in the 3D models. On Thingiverse and Prusarprinters I have made all parts, drawings and templates available for download.
    Have fun building.

    The little boat travellers are the toughest part. Mine we always jamming and/or making wrong turns at the intersection. Plastic is a terrible material for them; way too much friction. They need to have enough clearance to ride smoothly but not so much that the point can take a wrong turn. You've given me a few nice ideas for some improvements. Nice work.

      And indeed, but maybe 6 wires are not enough too. At least for large cores like in the video, it seems to have some spacing.

      With the assembly drawing on Thingiverse it should be possible to build the machine with some technical skills ;-). If you need a DXF or TIF file of the base plate I can send it to you by mail.

Matte PLA got a kind of wierd plastic-marshmallow-like behavious during the print. The outer surface is however nice overall. But such materials, despite being mure ductile than regular PLA are also more brittle (able to break) considering the much worse inter layer adhesion they got. I didn't tried yet the eryone version, and dispite it s lower density compared to the brands i tried i expect the formulation and overhall behaviour to be really close. Didn't you notice it ?

      Hello, I'm just about to develop the machine further. I will offer the machine on the Kickstarter website. There I will sell a small series of this machine. There will be a physical kit in which all parts are included except the engine. So all 3D printed parts, screws, springs, acrylic base plate, metal parts....
      There will also be a digital kit with all .stl files and production drawings.
      But I will need 1-2 months to finish the machine. I will upload a video on CZcams when it is ready.
      On the short I uploaded yesterday, you can see the current state. The machine will work with 12 coil carriers. But you can also use only 6.

      @@FraensEngineering that’s awesome, I mainly need it for four strands, would this be an issue by any chance or would I have to use less gears? I watched the video several times and I am still wrapping my head around how the braiding works.
      Do you have an idea of the cost you think you would charge on kickstarter?

    • @FraensEngineering
      @FraensEngineering  Před rokem

      Hi, unfortunately I can not yet say the exact cost. I have only calculated roughly. There are some parts that I have to have manufactured by an external company (base plate with the guideways, some shafts with thread....). I have some good connections for this and hope that this will not be too expensive. The springs for the thread tension, aluminum parts, etc. I will make myself. There are then some additional parts such as ball bearings, motor, etc. installed. Here you can fall back on cheap parts from the Chinese. I will make the price calculation in any case fair. Rich I will not 😁 It is rather a fun project because it gives me great pleasure.

      @@FraensEngineering can you share the rough cost? I have been considering buying a 3d printer the whole night after watching your video.

    • @FraensEngineering
      @FraensEngineering  Před rokem +1

      The approximate cost will be around 300-500€. But this can still change because I have no fixed price commitments from external companies. The calculation is made for a small series. Building a single machine will cost even more. This is really only a rough calculation. I do not know what you have for manufacturing possibilities. But if you have to have all the parts made, it can cost a lot more. The laser cut acrylic glass base plate alone costs 150-200€ for individual production. You need a lot of shafts with threads for the gears. Cutting the aluminum tubes, milling the aluminum tube for the coil holder..... There comes quite what together.
      Basically, a 3D printer is in my opinion anyway a sensible investment. But a good printer costs 1000€ upwards. I print with a Voron 2.4, which in my opinion is pretty much the best you can have for home use.

  • @PrintYourWorld
    @PrintYourWorld Před rokem

    The Kicktarter for a greater number of spools is interesting.
    The way you have left this 6 spool design leaves me concerned about what you get from a finished Kickstarter project.
    This 6 spool design has no assembly documentation, very few measurements (rod lengths?), missing 3D print parts, and an inadequate parts list. I recognize in the Kickstarter that you are promising many of these things, but in absense of an example of what we should expect, it is harder to support. This is just intended as constructive feedback.
    I'm mostly finished building the 6 spool version, and I've run into the new problem of what kind of spool do I use. The spool holder supports a spool that is 3 inches tall, with an inside diameter of 5/8" (78mmx16mm). Serger spools are 4.4 inches tall. Sewing machine spools have too small an inside diameter. So what kind of spool are we supposed to use with either design? I realized on the kickstarter that you wind it with a drill, and I see a missed opportunity where you could have sized this for serger spools by making it 1.5 inches taller. I think I would be willing to support a project that could use Serger spools.
    All of that said, I am very impressed with what you make, I just think some of your projects need more polish, and this 6 spool is definitely one of them. I haven't tried assembling your other projects.
    Keep up the great work!

    • @FraensEngineering

      Hello, the KS campaign is a purely digital product. Since the machine was designed and built by me, there should be no delivery problems. The files are ready to be shared. The machines I build are basically prototypes. That's why the 6 coil design is very rough. Many things have been improved on the 12 spool design. If you mean the missing parts of the 6 spool version on Thingiverse, that was not done unintentionally. After personal request I always shared the missing parts.
      Regarding the 2 bearing housings: a one-sided bearing is technically very unclean. In fact I tested it to save a lot of ball bearings. Result: wobbly gears. In my more than 10 years career as a designer in mechanical engineering, I would not have drawn something like this. Also a fit has some undersize.
      In the KS campaign the 12 spool version is offered and not the old 6 spool design. The machine works great. Motivation to build this machine came from the many requests. So I created a digital fileset with all the needed production drawings. The drawings and parts lists were made to the best of my knowledge and I would be surprised if there were any problems. Prototyping, new designs and the creation of production drawings is my daily bread. The braiding machine was designed as simple as possible. Suggestions for improvement are welcome ;-)

      The coils on the KS version have a conical design. This means that the coils are thicker at the top and bottom. In the middle where the rope is pulled off, the coil is thinner. Unfortunately, you can not see this in the video, because I built it later.

      @@FraensEngineering so far I am finding the gears do not mesh well (too much distance from each gear), and with no clear instructions, it's hard to get the basic functioning of the 6 spool to work properly. Is there a reason why you left the 6 spool project so incomplete? If I could see some success with it, I could see investing in your KS project. Right now I don't have a lot of confidencein your end product.

    • @FraensEngineering
      @FraensEngineering  Před rokem +1

      Hello, the 6 coil project has not been discontinued. It became the 12 coil project (czcams.com/video/4jdi63u2LKI/video.html).
      The gear design was completely revised. The spacing of the gears was made to fit in the Kickstarter version. In addition, the gears were equipped with involute gearing. Much more important than the spacing of the gears is the accuracy of fit of the slideway. The adjustment of the center pieces is very important.
      In the video from minute 6.10 you can see the assembly of the coil carrier. I think here the function of these should be well visible. Basically, the rope tension is maintained by a spring. The locking lever prevents too much cord from being wound from the spool.
