This is an assembly instruction for my 3D printed braiding machine. I have built the machine in many months of development work. I provide all the files needed to build the machine for download.
With the braiding machine it is possible to make uniform braids. It is possible to use up to 12 coil carriers.
Ropes are a versatile material with numerous applications. Whether for gift wrapping, clothing, for decorating cables or as fastening material - ropes are used practically everywhere. Yet they are often taken for granted and their manufacture often goes unnoticed. Thanks to modern machinery, it is now possible to produce ropes in high quality and with uniform braiding. By using different colors in production, it is even possible to create aesthetically pleasing ropes.

That ratchet mechanism to prevent the spools unreeling is genius 🤯
Yes that's right. It is a very old principle that earlier braiding machines used.
Absolutely beautiful design. I have no need for a braiding machine, but now I want one! :)
its super cool to see how different people approach a braiding machine. i working building these machines so its interesting to get insight into the design portion of it.
WOOHOO! I just bought the files pretty excited thank you for all your work much appreciated.
Thank you for the purchase. If you have problems somewhere, you can write to me: FraensEngineering@gmx.at
I would also be very happy about pictures of the built machine.
I’d love to see 3 strand (or larger numbers of strands)version for different gages of wire steel/copper/aluminum
Amazing this is the future of home manufacturing
Brilliant, just brilliant! Without 3D printing this would have been impossible. I have seen real industrial braiding machines and they were all expensive!
I think in the future many processes will become cheaper through 3D printing. Engineers will have to rethink the way they design. When 3D printing arrives in industry, we will design machines that were impossible until now.
Thanks so much putting in so much effort to make sure a great gadget that so many of us want! I used to work in a wire factory, running the industrial braiding machines. I found it to be so satisfying to think how the machine can continually wrap around each other. Those machines, for the most part were VERY OLD, but still great. When I left that job for a better one, I have always held a sense of desire to own some form of a braider in my home, but, of course that was way beyond reach, and actually not a reasonable thing to do. BUT, with your help, many of us may find that pleasure to be within our range! Great job!!
Thanks for the really nice comment :-)
Im looking for a braiding machine, can you help me recommending one, please?
I don't actually own one, but if I wanted one now, I would be enticed to try this one in the video. I ran big comercial ones, like Wardwells, and Spirkas. As a home crafter, I would look to find one with some good adjustments for all the tensions, as this is a big part of getting a good smooth rope, or cord. Of course you want to consider what you plan to do with it, to decide how many carriers, or bobbins you put on it, and the size of threads, wires, or yarns you want to braid should be looked at... (back to some tension there for that.)
All in all, I am probably not much help here. sorry.
It has been some 30 years since I ran them. I still find it amazing though, that it is possible to have a machine that can continually overlap strands, to have a solid woven tube.@@monicacatocho8291
Wirklich gut!
This is gorgeous. Unlike so many projects you actually provide enough detail to attempt this. Next time we have a pandemic - this is what I’m doing in lockdown 😂
This is a wonderful lock down activity to keep your mind clear ;-)
Well done. And nicely documented
Nice detailed design, I like it!
Crazy work, so impressive. Nice video too, appreciate your effort for explaining it all so well!
Thank you very much. It also takes a lot of work and time to develop such machines.
What a masterpiece... Wow, just wow
Very nice, thanks
Freakin awesome!!
I commented on another of your video where we had a discussion. Would the files provided be use to laser cut the non-3d printed parts ? Also, what would limit the diameter of the rope ? And If i want to insert a cable inside the braid, what would the diamter limit be the the cable inside the braid.
Also, Do you provide a ''standard'' for the spring you wind at the end ? I dont have that machine to wind the spring.
thank you so much!
Hi, I can send you the laser parts. Unfortunately, I have not tested it yet. Write me on fraensengineering@gmx.at
you fucking madlad, you did it
Veni, vidi, vici 😂
Can i use this machine for 3mm diameter of rope?
Sie stehen also etwas schräg.
LG
@@FraensEngineering Vielen Dank für die schnelle Antwort.
Could you go Into a little more depth on how the handoff from one gear to the other works. I can't wrap my head around it
I think it's very difficult to describe in words.
Could this design be expanded to run 16 carriers?
Only 12 or fewer bobbin carriers can be used on this machine. With 16 pieces, 2 pairs of gears would have to be added.
