The Mysterious Companies Who Sponsor Premier League Teams

  • The likes of Leeds United, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United all currently have shirts sponsored by companies that few people in the United Kingdom will ever have heard of - and almost the entire league has some form of sponsorship from a company of this kind.
A lot of these companies are based in the Philippines, and appear to be focussed solely on selling their gambling platforms to Chinese viewers, despite the fact that gambling is illegal in China.
So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the unknown and mysterious companies paying tens of millions of pounds to sponsor Premier League teams, why they do it, and whether it is likely to continue.
CREDIT: There have been a number of fine investigations into this subject before my own, including one by Joey D'Urso for The Athletic that I would highly recommend for anyone seeking further reading on the subject.

This is why I like Luton Town's policy on shirt sponsors, no gambling companies and normally it is always a local company. This week its replaced with Prostate Cancer. Although not great financially as a mid table championship club this seems to be the right way of doing things

As a Filipino, I think you did really well with your research on the POGO situation here. Just some things though:
    * POGO refers to the offshore gambling operators, *not* to a regulatory body (that's PAGCOR's job)
    * Tensions between Beijing and Manila are mainly due to territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea
    * If anything, Duterte doesn't seem to be bothered by the negatives of these POGOs. He may have a reputation for being a pottymouth, but the guy loves China (whom he refers to as a best friend)
    * Some POGOs do not even pay taxes (not much of a win-win, especially with the behavior of their workers)
    * The Philippines isn't a football-loving country (i.e. not much of a football gambling market), but the policies seem lax (even before Duterte), so there are a number of betting firms based here, e.g. Dafabet and SBOBET, and virtually nobody knows about them.

This has to be the best football channel on CZcams imo. Your in-depth research on various different topics within the sport is absolutely superb. Being a Norwich fan, I’m delighted that the club decided against the BK8 sponsorship deal in the end. Yes, we don’t get the money, but I like to think Norwich is trying to do things the right way, so I find it funny when TalkSport and other critics say ‘What is the point in Norwich?’. Hilarious when you think our budget is by far the smallest in the EPL, but apparently we are the laughing stock? I hope we can prove these people wrong and stay up. Football could do with a financial reset (which I know will never happen), but wouldn’t it be great to see football return to a more competitive sport for all teams in the top league, rather than who has the most money.

Football fan based here in the Philippines. It isn't really a big sport here cause of the influence of American colonialism and all. But it was a real surprise that you somehow tied the random sponsors I was genuinely curious about on EPL kits to a detailed explanation on a local situation a lot of us here don't really have the inner details of, regarding the sudden influx of folks from China just moving here to chill and gamble I guess. So shout out Alfie for explaining this all to me from a foreign understanding of the situation, the government doesn't really inform us about these things in detail, not because we're not allowed to know or anything but because they really have no incentive in telling us anything really. Didn’t expect the Philippines to be a part of yet another stellar video from Alfie. But now that we’re on the topic - would love to see a video about the state of football in my native country. For starters, the national team for a country of over 100 million lost 6-1 to Beckham’s LA Galaxy (where I’m based) back in 2011

Bolton wanderers was terminated all relationships with gambling companies baring the ones enforced by the league. we have no betting kiosk in the stadium and have teamed up with an addiction charity to help those affected hopefully other clubs will follow.

Can you do a documentary on the afc Wimbledon on the nine promotions in eleven years, how they’re a fan own club and how they have a stadium in plough lane now.
The story of they lost the club, how the F A allowed that and won’t allow that anymore.

I had long thought the influx of Chinese sponsors represented a variety of industries, so it's pretty mind-blowing to learn they're all related. As an American who grew up in Nevada I am generally pro-gambling. That's because while problem gambling does exist, the tax revenue from gaming is vital to the state's economy and education system. Indeed most states which have legal gambling/lottery/sportsbooks use the tax revenue for the public good such as education or land conservation. I would rather see PL clubs partner with legitimate betting agencies, but is there anything billionaires love more than unregulated, dubious cashflow?

Shame on u for pretending to be righteous🤢🤢🤮Banks r technically legalized scams🤏Liverpool sponsor is known scammer🤏City ,Arsenal & Newcastle sponsors r companies that directly owned by authoritarian regimes who practice child labor, torture & numerous human rights abuses. So pls spare us this fake righteousness🤢🤢🤮

That is fascinating. At least my team Swansea City are no longer sponsored by YoBet or 32RED, but by the local University. Though why a Uni should need to sponsor a football club is another mystery.

As well as banning betting sponsors on shirts, it would be good if sponsors had at least a reasonable market in the UK. Liverpool and Carlsberg, Man United and Vodafone, a lot of these are actually quite iconic shirt sponsors for one reason or another and are actually kits you’d want to buy.

HITCSevens, please do a video about the best XI in the Premier League since 1992 in each position e.g Schmeichel, Cech in goal, Neville, Azpilicueta, Walker at right back. It would be brilliant.

Again outstanding research on this subject. Another related topic to this gambling involvement, is match fixing, not just in football, but in other sports as well. ( tennis anyone?) . BTW have noticed Hull City have been on a run of good form, maybe you should do more frequent features on them , maybe they can challenge for promotion (one can always hope.
