Why Bayern Munich Threatened To Join Serie A

  • Bayern Munich are the most popular and successful team in the Bundesliga, and in German football as a whole - but almost 20 years ago, the club from Bavaria threatened to leave it all behind.
    An enormous scandal in 2003 caused a rupture in relations between the DFB, the Bundesliga, and Bayern Munich.
    In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the Kirch Affair, which created that dispute, why FC Bayern München threatened to move to Italy and join Serie A, and ultimately why it never happened.

Dortmund is a club that is great at developing young talent but when the real big guys offer these players a contract, they are gone in no time. They might have a season or two, where they can challenge Bayern, but then they lose all their best talent and have to start over again.

    Fun fact - Italians call Munich "Monaco di Baviera", which I only learnt after my GF (who was living in Italy at the time) had some Italian friends ask her if she wanted to go to Monaco for a weekend. So she agreed, went and found it puzzling why after she woke in the car after an overnight trip to "Monaco", that she was surrounded by snow capped mountains. She then spent a cold weekend in Munich in November, thinking she'd be by the sea in far warmer conditions.

    • @Mindartcreativity
      @Mindartcreativity Před 2 lety +22

      This is exactly what Nagelsmann talked about two days ago at the press conference before the CL match. Instead of lamenting that Bayern is too strong, every damn Bundesliga club should take their balls in their own hand and play to win EVERY match not just the two games against Bayern. In the Bundesliga only Bayern has the winner mentalitiy, the „mia san mia“ as they call it, because they don‘t care what the other 17 clubs are doing and are only focusing on their own game. Crying that Bayern is too strong, hating on Bayern for being too strong won‘t change a damn thing. And Bayern is not just a great club, they are the best team there has ever been in Germany and Top 3 in Europe!

    • @toph8298
      @toph8298 Před 2 lety +41

      @@Mindartcreativity With all due respect Nagelsmann is living in the world of fantasy with comments like that. Bayern’s wage bill is twice that of Dortmund, in itself a big German club. What happened the last time Dortmund assembled a top class side? Bayern poached their best players. The Bundesliga has effectively become a feeder league to Bayern. I think it is quite sad to see this as Germany has some wonderful, big clubs but has become incredibly boring in recent years.
      It’s easy to claim other clubs should be looking to win every game, but with less money and a lower standard of squad they’re never going to win more points over the course of a season than Bayern.

Secondly, Dortmund buys way more players from league rivals. Go check. And it‘s not illegal to buy players from rival teams for any club in any sense. Bayern earned all that money through hard, consistent work and the titles follow. In detail it is what I said. Dortmund, Leipzig and Leverkusen lose too many games against other teams than Bayern, that‘s the difference but nobody admits it because it‘s way easier to blame Bayern for for their own success. Bayern‘s domination will go on for years unless Dortmund and Leipzig start playing like big boys and win 17/17 games!

      You could also say, they made a completely legal contract with another party, which did not violate any Bundesliga rule, DFB rule, DFL rule or any part of the broadcasting agreement, but when their rival clubs found out, they milked it for all the bad press and fines they could. I am far from a Bayern fan, but i've always had the feeling the other clubs back then enjoyed themselves a lot making Bayern out to be the bad guy, and tried to squeeze whatever they could out of it. Joining the Serie A of course would be a complete overreaction and had about 0% chance of happening, but it goes to show how emotional the debate was back then.
