Why Bayern Munich Threatened To Join Serie A

- Bayern Munich are the most popular and successful team in the Bundesliga, and in German football as a whole - but almost 20 years ago, the club from Bavaria threatened to leave it all behind.
An enormous scandal in 2003 caused a rupture in relations between the DFB, the Bundesliga, and Bayern Munich.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the Kirch Affair, which created that dispute, why FC Bayern München threatened to move to Italy and join Serie A, and ultimately why it never happened. - Sport
Bayern: We could leave the Bundesliga at every moment.
Every German football fan: Dont threaten me with a good time.
You know damn well Dortmund is gonna become better now
@@whyareyouusinglightmode2098 The only thing I know "damn well" is that Haaland will leave Dortmund next summer and then Gio Reyna and Bellingham the summer after that. Dortmund is a club that is great at developing young talent but when the real big guys offer these players a contract, they are gone in no time. They might have a season or two, where they can challenge Bayern, but then they lose all their best talent and have to start over again.
@@Otto910 I mean without bayern the bundesliga would be nothing but ok
@@kaedeakamatsu6877 Because having one club that is so much richer than everyone else and subsequently winning every title is so great right?
Some people care more about a competitive season than fan interest for the league from China or the US.
@@Otto910 oh right I forgot bayern doesn't have any fans in germany who would like to see their club winning as well. the bundesliga without bayern would be nothing. when was the last time one of the other clubs won the ucl? or even uel?
Fun fact - Italians call Munich "Monaco di Baviera", which I only learnt after my GF (who was living in Italy at the time) had some Italian friends ask her if she wanted to go to Monaco for a weekend. So she agreed, went and found it puzzling why after she woke in the car after an overnight trip to "Monaco", that she was surrounded by snow capped mountains. She then spent a cold weekend in Munich in November, thinking she'd be by the sea in far warmer conditions.
Being from Munich, some people here also call it “Italy’s northernmost city”
@@Felipe-zn8mj thats Regensburg
Not really. She either didn't listen well, or her friends didn't pronounce well. Munich is Mònaco with the accent on the beginning o, while Monaco is Monacó with the accent on the ending o.
There is a clear difference, but it might have been an oversight.
@@montezumasrache4090 It's very possible that she's just not very good at speaking Italian
@@montezumasrache4090 We pronounce "Principato di Monaco" the same way as we pronounce "Monaco di Baviera", We say Monacó only when talking about the football team.
Always heartwarming to hear stories where big clubs and corporations don’t get punished for their crimes because they are big enough to screw the smallest clubs without consequences
How is that heartwarming?
@@itswalker9 I think he's being sarcastic
Covid closures anyone? 😏
I am far from a Bayern fan, but in their defense i'd like to point out, that the only actual crime (tax evasion by Hoeneß) was indeed punished, as mentioned in the video he even went to prison. The contract between Bayern and Kirch was not a crime, it was more deemed immoral and a bad look, but no actual laws had been broken.
Capatilism everybody
The Bundesliga would be a wonderful league without Bayern. So many big clubs and ridiculously competitive. Bayern are a great club but their creeping dominance from the 1990s has hit the point of being insufferable.
This is exactly what Nagelsmann talked about two days ago at the press conference before the CL match. Instead of lamenting that Bayern is too strong, every damn Bundesliga club should take their balls in their own hand and play to win EVERY match not just the two games against Bayern. In the Bundesliga only Bayern has the winner mentalitiy, the „mia san mia“ as they call it, because they don‘t care what the other 17 clubs are doing and are only focusing on their own game. Crying that Bayern is too strong, hating on Bayern for being too strong won‘t change a damn thing. And Bayern is not just a great club, they are the best team there has ever been in Germany and Top 3 in Europe!
@@Mindartcreativity With all due respect Nagelsmann is living in the world of fantasy with comments like that. Bayern’s wage bill is twice that of Dortmund, in itself a big German club. What happened the last time Dortmund assembled a top class side? Bayern poached their best players. The Bundesliga has effectively become a feeder league to Bayern. I think it is quite sad to see this as Germany has some wonderful, big clubs but has become incredibly boring in recent years.
It’s easy to claim other clubs should be looking to win every game, but with less money and a lower standard of squad they’re never going to win more points over the course of a season than Bayern.
They would be like what Serie A is like now, ironically enough.
@@Mindartcreativity The irony when Naglesmann himself is a manager poached by Bayern from the second best team last season
@@toph8298 First, what I wrote was my opinion and not what Nagelsmann said. He was aksed about it in the press conference but I didn’t include any part of his answer. Secondly, Dortmund buys way more players from league rivals. Go check. And it‘s not illegal to buy players from rival teams for any club in any sense. Bayern earned all that money through hard, consistent work and the titles follow. In detail it is what I said. Dortmund, Leipzig and Leverkusen lose too many games against other teams than Bayern, that‘s the difference but nobody admits it because it‘s way easier to blame Bayern for for their own success. Bayern‘s domination will go on for years unless Dortmund and Leipzig start playing like big boys and win 17/17 games!
I think bayern Munich would quit 1 hour after having to deal with Italian football authorities 🤣🤣

Concerning Hoeness tax evasion it should be noted, that he didn't evade any taxes of his general income in Germany. The tax evasion came from a Swiss bank account, he used to "gamble" on the stock market. He made a lot of money there and lost it too. On the money he made he should have payed taxes, but he didn't.

Disgraceful
You could also say, they made a completely legal contract with another party, which did not violate any Bundesliga rule, DFB rule, DFL rule or any part of the broadcasting agreement, but when their rival clubs found out, they milked it for all the bad press and fines they could. I am far from a Bayern fan, but i've always had the feeling the other clubs back then enjoyed themselves a lot making Bayern out to be the bad guy, and tried to squeeze whatever they could out of it. The Bundesliga clubs, especially Dortmund, need to grow a spine in regards to holding onto their best players and not letting Bayern steal them all. It is this weak mindset that has allowed Bayern to dominate the league.

Every time i hear about the distribution of prize money I dream of a Serie A where the distribution of prize money is reversed, the relegated teams get the most and where the league becomes more competitive and close due to this positive feedback loop, like it happens in north american sports… Prize money is so low in Italy anyway that the biggest teams live of CL money and selling tickets, so it wouldn’t mine the international competitiveness of the league. But it will never happen :(
But in american sports theres so called „tanking“ where the semi-bad teams play bad by purpose, just to get the top pick in the next round, which makes a lot of games very boring to watch. I think football whould be even worse in terms of tanking if there whould be a system in which the lower ranked teams get the most money, also why should a team that is playing the next season in serie B for example get the most money, they whould have an extreme advantage over the other serie B teams which finished in the higher ranks but didnt get promoted
@@95zzz yeah but serie B is such a shitshow of bad football and underfunded teams that having richer teams and better players couldn’t do much harm at the system and maybe oblige teams to invest more and up the quality of the league all together.
