Christopher Nolan has made a name for himself making intellectual mind-bendy movies with films like Memento, Inception and Tenet. Let’s just say it, the dude is a little obsessed with time. He’s one of the few filmmakers making truly “epic” movies, and it’s really cool when you can understand them.
Interstellar definitely raises some questions though. Like why doesn’t anyone seem to care about Tom? Why did they decide to go down to that time dilation planet first? Why did they try to collect that worthless data? Why was there a Matt Damon jumpscare on the second planet? Why did Tom name his kid Coop Cooper? Why did Cooper send the same “stay” message that he knew did not get him to stay?

I haven’t seen this movie in a couple years and when he said “he has 2 kids” I was like “no he doesn’t, he only has a daughter” which, like, shows how much favouritism Murph was given
its kinda upsetting cause i always wanted more of Toms perspective. Its like he was sidelined.

I died laughing from this, it's exactly how the film feels about Tom in comparison to Murph.
I thought it was a great movie but that was very disappointing the way he downplayed his relationship with his son

Coop literally doesn’t even ask about his own son once upon his return.
Well, for one, Cooper was a very loving, though very selfish father to begin with.
He loved both Tom and Murph, and during their childhood he treated them as such.
But Cooper never was a good provider or a caretaker (hint; in a world where everyone’s a farmer for survival he hated it)
Cooper shows love through commitment, giving attention and being invested in their hopes and dreams. And so arises the movie’s conflict:
Tom was older and a simpler person, so Cooper succeeded in giving him "enough" of his love. Thus Tom got married, had a kid, worked and lived where he wanted to most. So Cooper could somewhat relax about their relationship, having already "succeeded".
In contrast, Murph was very young, a child prodigy who never knew her mom and had a very chaotic future ahead of her. Kids like that need extra care and attention, otherwise they develop deep abandonment trauma, low sense of self-worth, struggle socially and existential crisis.
Cooper knew all this, and yet he abandoned her. Thus she takes up the dramatic tension - Tom made Cooper feel proud, Murph gave him guilt.
Throughout Interstellar, Cooper’s motivation is to solve his crisis of guilt, and to ensure Murph becomes a happy and fulfilled adult who knew how much her father loved her. It’s this conflict, Cooper’s goal of showing that he cared, that drives the tension of the movie.
Hence the bittersweet yet cathartic ending. Murph was an old woman who had accomplished great things, moved on from her trauma and started her own family. Thus the dramatic tension of whether or not she understood his love for her, was fulfilled.
That’s why Murph sent him away after a brief reunion. It fulfilled the drama of the story, because it showed that she had moved on from needing his attention, and that she got the happy and fulfilling life Cooper fought to secure for her. She gifted him relief from the guilt that drove him the entire movie, Murph gave him his blessing to go out and do another adventure, a new purpose to fulfill and pursue his own happiness.
Try to imagine if the movie ended in a more predictable way:
Cooper comes back to earth. Him and Murph are now the same age, she runs crying tears of happiness and says that she forgives him. He is finally there for her and Tom, like he promised he would, and their relationship heals. Murph saves the world and they all grow old together in this hopeful future.
Seems like a more happy ending right? A mediocre filmmaker would have gone for that. But a small part in the back of our minds would have felt thematically unfulfilled. As if something was just not right. As if the movie didn’t really have anything to *say*.
That’s why Cooper and Tom’s relationship wasn’t fleshed out. It would have detracted from the themes and narrative.
It's nice to see Ryan trust Bryan to fill in for him with something as big as Pitch meetings.
I'm used to just seeing him on Ryan's channel as an extra or background character.
Bryan is definitely gonna hit it big now! No more small parts for him!

I was VERY aware of the disproportionate degree of love he had for his kids. It was so blatant it was unintentionally hilarious

For those who didn't get it in The Dark Knight Rises that Nolan is a dumpster fire when it comes to human relationships and needs to find a better writing partner if his films are ever to make it beyond killer visuals.
Yeah Nolan cannot write emotion and this movie kind of depended on that...and it didn't work

I just saw it about 6 months ago. I'd been wanting to see it since it came out but I rarely watch movies. I've never been more disappointed in my life. It was a ridiculously bad movie.
It's a nice sentiment until I realize how many people I've casually witness who've never seen or heard of the most popular/iconic movies of all time like _Toy Story_ or _Monty Python and the Holy Grail_ because they just crawled out from under a rock or were raised in a "Christian Family" home, full of Veggie Tales tapes and Kids Bop CDs.
@redhorsereincarnated5040 yes, it's one of the best movies I have ever seen. If you have questions, I recommend the book on the making of the movie. The director had a team of physicists and programmers working night and day to get the science right and the visuals. They actually did cutting edge research.
I didn't even realise Ryan wasn't in this pitch meeting. Great job Bryan 👍.

I never thought the pitch meeting for Interstellar could be over in 6 minutes while boiling it down to its fundamentals.
Well that's gonna be really easy, barely an inconvenience.
I mean it's a fairly simple movie as far as scripts go. Great visuals though. A lot of it was just exposition and then showing what they just explained was going to happen through the stretched out visuals. Good film

On first viewing, I thought the twist was going to be that we find out the message "stay" did not mean that Cooper should not go on the mission, but that humanity should not leave Earth. Like, there was a way to save Earth rather than abandon it.
Bryan did a fantastic job. It’s uncanny how well he imitated Ryan.

Holy hell, his bit about the time dilation planet is actually an amazing point.
It's actually also revealed in the movie itself while on that very planet ;).
Yeah, everything about that planet broke logic and common sense. Everyone suddenly acted stupid so it could happen. It was the weakest part of an otherwise strong movie by far.

I was also struck by the fact that Cooper and Doyle bickering about Plan A versus Plan B was entirely pointless. It was like two professional astronauts forgot what their mission was. Whether colonization used Plan A or Plan B had NOTHING to do with whether the Endurance mission succeeded. It depended on whether NASA was able to develop a gravity-based propulsion system.
@@johnpaulvanson5170I personally think the weakest part was Murph after 23 years of having no contact with her father upon seeing her father's 23 year old watch taking the leap that this is her father communicating with her from a different galaxy through gravitational forces present at the center of a black hole(That he miraculously survived) about how gravity in a black hole works.
Instead of you know just assuming that the watch is broken.
Bryan did good but next time remember it's "actually its gonna be super easy, barely an inconvenience" not "actually it was super easy"
I've started to get so immersed in these videos that I had a little reality check at the "we have the same face" line because my brain didn't register Ryan being everyone everywhere all at once

I always find it hilarious when actors end up in multiple movies with the same very specific genre. This pitch meeting covers two instances of that phenomenon, therefore, it is perfect.

Poor screenwriter guy tried to ignore the first questionable ‘tight’ but producer guy wasn’t having it
Petition for Chalamet to get cast for any Nolan film in the future. He was an emerging talent back then, and his screen time did not do justice.
Looking forward to Bryan and Ryan collaborating on a pitch in future. Kid has potential!

I've seen Interstellar at least a dozen or so times and yet for some reason I never thought about how Cooper's grandson is named "Coop Cooper."
I rationalize that by assuming that Lois kept her maiden name and the children took her last name rather than Tom's.
This movie has enough blatantly stupid things, I can give it the benefit of the doubt for something subtle like a background character's full name.

And a few of them have names sounding similar to him, so the joke is that "Bryan" took his place, even though they act the exact same.

One of the most incredible movies I've ever seen its a classic
One thing that really got me about Interstellar is how the Secret Nasa people just happened to be based right down the road from him out in the middle of nowhere and when he showed up unexpectedly, they were like, "Oh yeah, we were going to go on this secret mission to another planet in like 3 days and being a space exploration agency, we typically train our astronauts for months if not years for the mission and precisely calculate the exact amount of fuel needed to complete the mission, but anyway if you want to just tag along or whatever maybe you can go home for the weekend and spontaneously let your kids know that you'll never see them again while we very quickly alter the entire mission to add you."
Also another headscratcher was when all the plant life on the planet was just spontaneously dying, but everyone is like "Oh yeah, we're all about 5 years away from starving to death globally, but there's absolutely no market for jobs like scientists who might, you know, be able to develop new food sources or maybe figure out what is causing all the plants to die and maybe try to reverse it. Scientists are so useless. What we need is more untrained farmers who can cultivate endless fields for the, uh, dying plants. Oh, and also when I say we really need more farmers I mean, it's gotta be absolutely every single person. Everyone must get an education in farming. Ignore the fact that most farming is automated now, and we actually see a bunch of tractors that are self-driving drones... we totally need absolutely every single available hand helping with the farming that is done almost entirely by robots."
I’d watch a movie about automated farming and the old farmers who are against it for no good reason.

Wierd that they'd set up a "secret" NASA when Space Force & a Air Force command was already having set up, plan.
Always bugged me that he can manipulate gravity and doesn't just type on a keyboard. That seems a lot easier than Morse code on a watch
it still may not make much sense but i think the idea was it needed to be encoded on something murph would have well into her life, to the point where she could actually do something with that information. people get a new computer like every 5 years so its possible the data could be lost over time. he just had a really good feeling she would never get rid of the watch.

At some point he has to realise that he has way more control over what happens in the movie than Writer Guy.
In a few years Disney will have to release Avengers Vs Interstellar Vs Avatar, where Matthew is saved by the Avengers from the bookcase but gets dropped off on Pandora. But now Matthew has superpowers because you need a cliffhanger to lead into part 2.

For some people I guess it is... But for some (like me) it's both scientific and storytelling amazing movie, and it is way Smarter, then most of the people can understand at first watch, that is why some have forgotten it.

Bryan George really knocked it out of the park on this. Although he did an excellent job of playing Ryan George, there was a certain energy that was noticeably different. The subtle essence of nuance, the "YOU'RE ODDLY SPECIFIC," delivered with both passion and grace was...breathtaking.

I love that he brought up the time dilation problem that drove me crazy the first time I watched it. Would have been so much better an outcome if they were still alive but haven't even taken off their seatbelts yet and called McConaughey an moron.
But a signal was coming from that planet too. That's why they went to check out that planet. If the scientists had spent just one or two hours there, why would they have sent the signal that life was possible here? Maybe they were also scared like Matt Damon's character?
Yeah, the time dilation thing is one of the things bothered me the most about the movie in addition to how poorly Tom is treated despite how supposedly important love is. Even if *astronauts* suddenly all sucked at math, you think at least T.A.R.S., the only likeable character in the movie, would have raised an objection, which I don't remember him doing on those grounds.

The fact that so little time had passed on planet, however, should have made it clear that something (bad) was up. After all, you can't reasonably confirm something is habitable in an hour or so unless you're invoking _Alien: Covenant_ levels of stupidity, and then Brand's* dumbass doubles down and gets someone else and almost herself killed for an hour+ of nigh useless data. Fun.
(*I feel weird typing this since I feel Anne Hathaway has always gotten a weird amount of hate despite being a good actress, but gods, Brand is nigh insufferable. Only Michael Caine's character is more annoying overall to me.)
To me the worst thing is the waves. You can see that that planet is mostly water why would you think you can build a civilization there. Also time dialation is a decent red flag

Time travel and stuff, makes sense to me in this. What I don’t understand is HOW ARE THEY SURVIVING OFF OF CORN. It provides barely any nutrients. You can’t digest it. I don’t understand much more about for or corn but as far as I’m aware humans physically can’t survive off of corn.
