Once in a while, the internet goes absolutely nuts for something seemingly random. Recently, the concept of a Barbenheimer double feature emerge, and what seemed like just an internet meme translated into actual, real-world, box office dollars. Take that, Morbius!
Barbenheimer definitely raises some questions. Like how did this insane pairing of films come to be? What do these movies have in common? Why is every single word in Oppenheimer underscored with epic music? Why did Barbie keep driving its message home long after it was clear what it was trying to say?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Barbenheimer!

The JFK bit was absolutely brilliant. The way the name dropped it in the movie was if they were actually trying to set up a cinematic universe
When we gonna get the prequel to Oppenheimer

Also it feeds the crazies out there another conspiracy of who killed Kennedy. Did Straus do it for revenge?
Many have actually compared that film to Oliver Stone's JFK (1991) due to the epic scope, masterful editing, & all-star cast.

The fact that the movie Barbie feels more divisively political and controversial to talk about than Opennhimer is definitely something.
the fact it made ben shapiro have an immature meltdown and burn barbie dolls like an idiot was hilarious though. I haven't even seen the barbie movie (or oppenheimer) but it causing that moment of hilarity is probably worth me buying the ticket even if i don't intend to watch, just to say thanks barbie producers. :P

These big movie corporations are finding out that controversy is good marketing.
Listen, I don't want to disrespect the guy (too much), but a Barbie movie being more politically controversial than a Nolan movie feels pretty on brand for both.
Also a consequence of making the story of the atomic bomb the tale of a tormented scientist rather than the greatest terrorist attack and war crime in history, but that's another issue.

I'd be super interested in an Oppenheimer sequel involving JFK actually. This movie really introduced some really big questions politically and existentially that were stretched to their limit during JFK's presidency with events like the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Surely all historical films are either prequels or sequels to all other historical films. Except for the ones that are remakes, of course.

BARBENHEIMER
achievement unlocked!
Final verdict:
Choose "Barbie" for
more explosive plot.
Choose "Oppenheimer" for
more impressive bombshell.
Who woulda thunk?
But really:
"Barbie"
was lighthearted and upfront about its silliness, and for all its nostalgic throwbacks, adult eastereggs and storming through clichés & talking points, its "message" (if you REALLY want to overthink big dumb fun stuff meant for entertainment purposes and selling merch only) was pretty levelheaded and cute, basically common courtesy, basic human values, and dancing to musicals. The production design, however, is where the movie really shines - it is worthy of any prize you can possibly think of.
"Oppenheimer"
had some nice props as well, the overall narrative structure was a clever way of keeping audience attention while cramming in stuff for two or three movies which chronologically told in one session would most likely have lead to weird tonal shifts. When it came to single scenes, however, directorial and editing decisions sometimes seemed askew, odd, jarring even - and very often just way too much on the nose: Sometimes in the dialogue (snappy or "winking" one-liners galore, taken to almost quoteability-orgy-like proportions), wooden or over-the-top characterisation, a fetish for stark visuals (whether motivated or not), superfluous special effects that grotesquely talked down to the audience (halo effects, gratuitious "visions", overly dramatic camera trickery). Subtlety is a concept alien to Nolan, and he probably spells nuance thus: N. U. A. N. C. E. - "Oppenheimer" crossed into (unwanted) comedy territory more than once; during at least three scenes it felt like its own spoof. A mixed bag!
I agree. Honestly even though I really liked Oppenheimer, I thought Barbie was the better film.
