Disney has been rampaging through their list of classic animated films and remaking them with a blend of live-action and CGI. The next on the list is The Little Mermaid! Because they WILL do to every animated movie they’ve ever released. They will.
The Little Mermaid definitely raises some questions. Like why do all the creatures have to look so real? Why is Flounder scary? If Ursula can just lie and cheat, why even bother with a deal? Did Eric actually fall in love or was he just under the spell of the Siren call? How many of these remakes are left?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to The Little Mermaid!

A thought occurs: Wouldn't it have been smarter if they wanted to not make Ariel a damsel in distress for Eric to rescue in the final sequence to instead have her DELIBERATELY distracting Ursula so that Eric can get to the ship and stab her?
That’s literally what I was thinking while watching it. I have no qualms about making her more active in the final part of the movie, but let Eric the sailor maybe do the sailing part? Hell, she could even be the one to come up with the idea, but the way they handled it felt like it left Eric with … nothing he actually contributed in the whole movie? At least even though Ariel was pretty damsel in distress in the final act of the original movie she *saved Eric’s life* early on and was mostly an active protagonist (even making a bad deal is moving the plot forward!) - but Eric in this version does nothing plot wise but almost die, be in love/dubiously hypnotized by one woman, definitely be hypnotized by another, and then need to be rescued again. There’s a nice balance to be found where Ariel can be the primary force of moving the plot but Eric can still actually DO something
Eric did something, he saved Max, and nothing else.
@@4lackofbetterbut she even had to be involved in that by giving Max a little unnecessary boost. They castrated Eric. Made him whiny and ungrateful.

@heetsees eventually it get so bad that its amusing so thats probably not possible.
@@SamJ.J. haha good point. Ryan has already made it clear that he can't make fun of comedies because it's already a joke. How pensive of you. These films are already jokes. You even taught me a new word. Pensive. Btw why or how did you @ heetsees?
@heetsees clicked the name and it auto pops up. Sometimes it breaks though
100% accurate! disney doesn't even understand their own movies anymore.

The “what clips” bit was hilarious to me 😂😂. Love Disney’s originality and creativity.
I'm surprised he didn't mention the advisor having a foreign accent for no reason
Ok
The fact that the stories are so similar up to that point never even crossed my mind till those clips started playing. 😅
It's all about father-son relationship. Every Disney movie. Every Marvel movie. Nolan clearly did a total inception.
Not a father son relationship, but parent children relationship since Ariel is a daughter. Nowadays people don't really like 'true love' romance story since everyone is a cynic. They even need to put that the siren voice that caused 'love', not love at first sight of a pretty face.
Pitch meeting of this pitch meeting:
"How are you going to make this without mentioning that she is black and it was an Scandinavian story or that her father is not even the same race as she is? Actually it's going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience"
The only reason some animated movies don't have a live action remake yet is that the writers have yet to figure out which characters they'll turn black.
Thank you, somebody else mentioned that not having Eric stab Ursula ruins the motivations in the end. People keep mentioning that it makes more sense because he's the experienced sailer and she's the mermaid. While those points are also good ones, they're not the biggest issue with that switch. I cant believe the director of Chicago did this. The movie Chicago added so much to the material while with this movie you have to wonder if he fell asleep at the wheel. I dont know if Chicago was as good because of him or if he just didn't care about the Little Mermaid and it was a gig.
I don't know about that. One of the things always bugged me about the original was that Ariel basically left her father helpless at the bottom of the ocean to go chasing after Eric. Ursula could have killed him. She didn't even try to get the trident back, or warn the other merpeople. She had no thought about any of trouble that she caused, yet she was rewarded at end.
@@sabee3064 Okay but the story doesn't quite hit as hard if you build up to the climactic conflict of the story and the MC just......leaves to go get help. It would not be very empowering, the narrative doesn't stay where the action is, and she'd be leaving Triton just as helpless (which was by the design of the contract, there was no way to help Triton other than for Ariel to defeat Ursula; it was literally the basis of Ursula's whole plan - to achieve max power).
@@sabee3064 She was also a 16 year old girl in lust. No kid at that age is great at prioritizing.
@Sa Bee I think you need to watch the original movie over again. King Trident is never helpless. He's more powerful than Ursula. The only reason she over comes him is because she holds Ariel hostage with the contract and Trident agrees to take her place.
@@AmazingKevinWClark He was helpless. Ursula had the trident and he was a sea slug. He was completely at her mercy. There was nothing stopping her from killing him if she wanted to. Also I watched the original many times as a child. It was my favorite movie. As an adult there are some things that I notice.
There's like 2 Disney films I'd actually be excited to watch in live action.
Treasure Planet
Atlantis
Don’t worry they’ll ruin those too
I used to want to see these along with Gargoyles done in live action, but in all honesty they would ruin them so much.
They already made a live action version of Atlantis. It came out a few years before the animated one and was called Stargate.
The only one I'd consider now would be reviving The Black Cauldron. Imagine the horned king & his undead army if Disney put some effort in it.
I hate you
Lin Manuel Miranda is the ONLY person who can make original music for disney movies 😂
I love how you literally just turned being awkward into a career.
The creativity is never-ending at Disney!
Unlike Disney, Ryan never disappoints.
A VERY creative team indeed!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Disney doesn't deserve to crap on the graves of the people who made the originals they're bastardizing.
The thing that gets me is the color-grading that always makes it look like God has removed sunlight from the world, even for scenes taking place in the middle of a sunny day.
Disney Team: Making creative movies is super hard, very much so an inconvenience
The Flash pitch is just going to be Ryan being super annoying to himself for 90% of the pitch, with one old friend and one new friend showing up for the other 10% to make it tolerable.
Disney doing all these live action remakes but ignoring the only two films that ABSOLUTELY do need and deserve a live action remake...
Atlantis and Treasure Planet...
It’s so relatable how Ryan’s break consists of him staring off into space with a frown on his face.
It could become a running bit. One break he has a snack. Next vid he reads a book. Next time he's playing fruit ninja on his phone.
While we’re on ludicrous movies, you should do a Pitch Meeting for “Bullet Train.” (As long as it’s barely an inconvenience) That film was completely off the rails and it’d be perfect for the channel.
It was a very fun bad movie. I enjoyed it a lot
That movie was great
I second this request, as I requested it previously.
The producers didn't have a good track record. It never gained any steam.
Well. Yes that movie also crossed my mind recently. It will be saved for a train-y day. I'm sure we all be rail-ly happy to wait for the signal and be on track watch it for sure... 😇
Regarding what you said last..
“ hey Ryan, were you able to stop talking?” “ it was super easy, barely an inconvenience!!!”
“life is much better, 😮down where it’s wetter under the sea” ..is tight”’!!
Loving these more and more. Introduce a new character: Casting Director Guy! 😂
The “you gotta be photorealistic” part killed me Hahhaha perfect lines and perfect delivery
Except they don't fully do that either. The crab has these weird cartoon eyes.
I do not recommend seeing he live action Pinnochio, but that movie proved they can still do cartoony "live action" cgi if they actually try. Pinoc, and Honestly John looked great. The rest of the movie was dog shite of course.
Meanwhile, Kaiju Ursula was the most non photorealistic looking thing in the whole movie 😂
10 thousand views in in less than 12 minutes of being posted?!?! Ryan, you DESERVE every bit of your success - you are, without a doubt, one of the best content creators on youtube!

I don't know why people think it's a problem for Disney to run out of classic animated movies to remake with real actors.
All Disney has to do is remake all of their older movies that used real actors and redo them using cartoon animations.
Like for instance, Enchanted, The Rookie, Race to Witch Mountain, The Santa Clause, Bedtime Stories, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Game Plan, and The Shaggy Dog .
This will keep the animation people going for a few decades at least!
"I think we pretended to be creative for long enough"😂😂😂
An animated remake of this live action pitch meeting would be tight!
I’m picturing Mulvaney as the writer, and Jada Pinkett-Smith as the producer.
This current version is “too white”.

@@Toriahna so true lol
What kind of person actually plans to watch Disney movies anymore?
I can legit see them going in and making 3d animated remakes of the old 2d disney movies once they finish all these live action ones
Aren't they only sort of live action, since half the characters are cgi? Or is the average audience member so shallow they don't get that fish don't talk?
Probably a good decision to only make a slight hint at the elephant in the room - and just focus on its other flaws.
playing the lion king panels was a stroke of genius. Well Played!
In fairness any movie starting out with a main lead related to a leader of a large kingdom generally rehashes the same plot. Some relative wants it for themselves, is involved with the dispatching of the mother/father of the kingdom, good guy has to fight to retake it. Etc.
Even Black Panther was that. The only real difference is that T’Challa was both the lead and the king. Yet his uncle’s kid wanted his rightful place. Etc. etc. etc.
For some reason I can’t get over how not a single one of Ariel’s animal friends are the same animals as the animated movie
I’m surprised they didn’t make Flounder look like an actual flounder, like with all eyes on the top side.
Can't say I'm surprised at all. 😒
Only natural, since Ariel is not the same as the animated movie either.
Wouldn't have been surprised if Disney made Ariel half human half clown fish so she could change her gender.
@@PhantomFilmAustralia should have made Ursla sh*t ink then she could at least say soemthing stunning and bold like- "oh sorry dearie- it's that time of the month..."
I'm glad Ryan mentioned how they left the "under the sea" song completely unchanged, but during the "fish playing instruments" verse they don't show any of that
Thumbnail is too nice, putting both of her eyes close together when its well known that they live in different states.
"At nipple level!!!!!!" "He was present while it happened, so that works". I'm on the floor! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Really too bad that they changed that part where Eric has a chance to save Ariel, it represented both characters being partners and saving each other.
Exactly. Ariel had already saved Erik. But we can't have men saving women any longer, that's taboo. Not surprised to hear they changed it this way. It's one reason I'm not going to watch the movie.
It's part of the unwritten Hollywood rules after MeToo happened. No woman can ever need saving by a man, and no man can ever defeat a woman in any way. Eric taking down Ursula to save Ariel falls under both of those.
@@MegamanXfan21xx It's silly though, because it completely derails the core storyline. Triton only comes to see Eric as possibly worthy because he saves his daughter and his entire kingdom by defeating Ursula at risk to himself. Besides, I mean they play to their strengths. Eric can do this because he's an expert sailor. Ariel can save Eric at the start of the movie because she's a mermaid and capable of swimming far better than Eric can. This does not make Ariel a damsel in distress, it's just a matter of strengths and weaknesses to give interesting characters we can relate to. Ariel shouldn't have a clue how to manage a ship well enough to "save the day", and without Eric being given a change to show humans can be heroic too, why would Triton change his mind about how terrible he believes all humans are? It makes no sense. I hate this change to the movie so much.
@@Jsa460 See, you pointed out why in your own comment. "It's about strengths and weaknesses" Women in modern film are no longer allowed to have weaknesses.
Erik did help Ariel defend herself from Ursula by throwing a rock in the live action remake tho
