are you not worried about them over-breeding in there? part of me wants more than one one, another doesn't want to end up with a hundred, like do you just occasionally have to check for corpses or something?

Very cool. I'm one of your basement neighbors here in the US haha. Became fascinated by these creatures after meeting hundreds of them on night fishing trips by the river (Pittsburgh area). Decided to keep a couple as pets and they've been doing great... But I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing right or wrong. Just generally trying to keep their enclosure conditions as close to the habitat where I found them as possible. One question I've yet to find the answer to: are aspen shavings ok for them? Had some left over from a pet snake and can't find any info on it.

Hey! Thanks for your comment! Im glad you stepped into the world of bug keeping. It sounds like you are on track by mimicking where they were found in the wild.
As for the aspen shavings, i believe they are unsafe to use. A good rule of thumb is to avoid soft woods (cedar, pine, etc) hard woods are good, oak, cherry, maple, beech, etc are all safe. You can always take a walk down to where you found them and take note of the tree species in the area.

@@minibeastscanada good point. I'll take a hike down there and grab as much as I can from the area. There's a large oak that fell where I found them so it's basically free food and shelter for them for years if I stock up every so often haha. Thanks for the response!

Thats perfect! As long as the wood is soft enough to break apart by hand you should be good. Might even find more pedes in it! I recommend breaking it down to smaller pieces to male sure no bugs are in it, and then bake it in the oven at 215 farenheit for 1h or so to kill and pests that may have come home with it

@@unknown-dp1qg yes i do 5-6”. Its recommended to do the depth of the largest millipedes length but even for babies i just give them the depth you would give the adults
