    I live in illinois, and I have never seen any large milipede like these except for in books. Today while on vacation in Door County, Wisconsin we took an adventure on our kayaks to an island not too far from the mainland. These guys were all over! We took one back to our vacation rental home and my daughter was so excited to find these!

      Catching and keeping native millipedes and isopods are the best. I hope you daughter learns a lot from this experience.

    Ooh beautiful little buggers! How I wish there was a larger community (at least here on CZcams) for keeping millipedes. I have a female O. ornatus of the gold variety and she's so stunning and very surface active! planning on getting a chocolate morph in the future and I may even set up a new tank for some C. spinigerus since their colouration is also quite beautiful. Millipedes are by far my favourite invertebrates.

    My favorite species I keep are spirostreptus sp. Uruguay. They have bright orange and olive green banding, have a pretty good length, and are very surface active. A close second would be my C. Spinegerus. I have regular and purples and they are great display species as well as they are always out and about and climbing branches. On the more diminutive end, I love the little B. Lecontii. I do love my albino N. Americanus, but they are always burrowed... Same goes for A. Monilicornis, they are absolutely stunning, but I wish they were more surface active...

    I just got my first Narceus gordanus last week!. While transferring it to its new enclosure it secreted yellow fluid all over my hands; it looked as though it was coming from the segments themselves. I have read that some are defensive and can cause irritation. DO I need to be concerned? I noticed that it was pretty acidic smelling, and stained my fingers pretty good.

    • @SupremeGecko
      @SupremeGecko  Před 3 lety

      That IS their defensive means. We wash our hands after holding any millipede but I've heard (unless you have an allergy) that the secretion is only a mild irritant on the skin (at the most). You would certainly never want to ingest something like this of course.

    • @bugspants5889

      Saw dust? This doesn't sound like an aged appropriate millipede substrate.

    • @SupremeGecko

      It is not. 'Flake' soil would be better but this is a close second.

    • @bugspants5889
      @bugspants5889 Před 4 lety

      @@SupremeGecko Wait, you're stating a raw product such as saw dust is a close second to flake soil? It's inedible for most millipedes until it decays which can take 5- 8 months depending on soft or hard wood. A close second would be decaying leaves, dried leaves and we feel a distance 20th place is a raw product for most millipedes.

    I've been interested in getting some millipedes and I'm between ivories but I also want bumblebee and scarlet. My husband was like uh why do you want millipedes? What do they do? lol. I told him about them he thinks I'm crazy well I am so I cant argue w him there but keeping little critters doesnt make you crazy haha. I have recently went out with my two youngest kids to a park area near a creek ( I call it a crick but that's just what we call them where I grew up). We found some different type of isopods I honestly don't know the species etc but there is at least 4 different types. I did this because I saw a few of your videos on them and that's what kind of pushed me to actually go out and collect some. While doing so I found 2 itty bitty millipedes. I have them w my isopods but I haven't seen them since I put them in because I don't want to bother them and want them all to settle in. Any who I'm done rambling just want to thank you for your videos they are all super helpful and informative in a fun nice way and enjoyable. Maybe you can do a video on all of your millipedes? Ha e a great night!

    40 degrees isn't actually that cold for millipedes, high heat is far more harmful to US natives than cooler temps, most come from areas with cold or at least pretty cool winters. The lack of insulation in the package aside from the newspaper isn't that unusual either, and would be unnecessary for this species, in that weather. :)

      Thank you for the comments. Agree about the 'too warm temps' point. Temps in FLA this week were in the 80s. The 40 degree difference is a bit concerning. And, is it typical to ship that many in that small of a container? Thanks again.
