60-Second Presidents is a collaboration between PBS LearningMedia and PBS Digital Studios, and is produced by Kornhaber Brown.
He’s also the first President to be born an US citizen.
He also learned English as a second language. Dutch was his native language.
he's such an interesting president.
His mother was also his wife's great-aunt
A fun fact actually.
My friend from Elementary School has the last name Van Buren and is actually the great great great great niece of Martin Van Buren!!
@Noor Jaddi ...It’s a fact lol
@Noor Jaddi and he had a great great niece so that was 200 years later
wait that's actually crazy, that means we could possibly be related
he's my great great great great great great great great uncle
He’s the only president who never initially speak English, he speak Dutch.
"While Andrew once killed a man in a duel"
What do you mean "once"
Van Buren had the worst Depression until 100 years later. 😐
Actually, Van Buren became VP in 1833 because of Jackson's feud with John Calhoun.
You forgot one important thing about Van Buren. Eight years later he ran for president again, this time as a third party candidate. He bombed, but his candidacy was the deciding factor in the election of Zachary Taylor!
Well, Taylor did run as a moderate, and War Hero, and keep in mind he was also old, had a Democratic Vice President, and Whigs tended to use Congress over the President to get things done. Aka the opposite of Andrew Jackson
@@idkwhatsgoingon4584 Congress as real power aka 'I'm Henry Clay, and I make all the rules here'
He was Dutch like me
Soviet Union nice.
We learn so much from these short videos!
Fun fact, Van Buren is the reason we say OK!
Fun fact: Martin van Buren might be my great great great uncle through relationships on my moms side of my family, so that’s cool I guess.
Dutch Americans are Americans of Dutch descent whose ancestors came from The Netherlands in the recent or distant past.
Whether intentional or not, they usually maintain connections with their Dutch heritage, by having, for example, a Dutch surname or belonging to a Dutch community group.
Dutch settlement in the Americas started in 1613 with New Amsterdam, which was exchanged with the British for the current Suriname at the treaty of Breda (1667) and renamed New York City.
The British split the Dutch colony of New Netherlands into two pieces, and named them New York and New Jersey.
Further waves of immigration occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries.
According to the 2013 American Community Survey, an estimated 4.5 million Americans claim total or partial Dutch heritage.
Today the majority of the Dutch Americans live in Michigan, California, Montana, Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin, Idaho, Utah, Iowa, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
They gave us the Roosevelts.
TROAP.
Happy Birthday Martin Van Buren! 🎂
When is his birthday? I'm trying to do an Astrological Natal chart.
And he died in 1862 a few months after the 3rd president to have a first name John
Im proud of Martin van Buren Im dutch to and i live now in the NETHERLANDS
Also the "Trail of Tears" happened under him.
That’s because of Andrew Jackson as well
Andrew Jackson is a bad man.
That was Andrew Jackson
He is my favorite President of USA
...and why is that? just being curious ... greets
@@ezandman6804 He might be a libertarian. Libertarians like Van Burens free market policy and that he avoided foreign wars.
@@handrikc7205 A libertarian? interesting but I don't think so, but I will give it some thought. Thank you. VanBuren wanted rules and regulations I think, that is not really libertarian. But yes he 'avoided' wars. I think VanBuren could have been 'friends' with Libertarians. Greeets
@@ezandman6804 Murray Rothbard called Van Buren his favorite president and he is ranked among the highest in all libertarian rankings of presidents.
@@handrikc7205 Oh Thank you sir for pointing that out. Are you an UScitizen? I am not, I am from the Netherlands. I am going to look into this Rothbard guy.
He also lived to see Abe Lincoln!
Martin Van Buren, number eight for a one-term shot as chief of state.
Dead in thirty days
Also the only President so far to not speak English as a first language.
Our 8th President.
He was a little better than Andrew jackson. He got blamed for the Panic of 1837, like it was not his fault. Andrew Jackson was to blame for the Panic of 1837
“They both believed in a small government.”
Are you sure about that
SirSirupy yeah, read the history and you will see
Yeah, we're sure about that.
the only us president whose motherlanguage was not english
I just heard of this guy from a Jerma985 video...
1837 was tragic King William IV died
He’s apparently my 3rd cousin lol
What is your evidence that Van Buren feared controversial decisions and just wanted to be reelected? He chosed not to interfere in the economy during the panic of 1836 because he believed in small government. This seems to me like a very controversial decision which may have ruined his reelection. If he wanted to be reelected, he would probably adopt a left-wing economy policy with government interference and make debt to help the poor.
Händrik C you need to learn about American politics of the time. These ideas weren’t thought of in the early 1800s
PBS’ bias is showing. Van Buren was actually one of the better Presidents.
But you don't explain how. Useless comment
said no one.
@@mmjahink Sure he has his flaws, but Murray Rothbard's reasonings were at least logical; you downplay the significance Van Buren had in forming the Democratic Party and thus the modern political party system. From the War of 1812 up until Van Buren's presidency, it was a one party federalist state. He established Jeffersonian practices again, and decentralized a lot of the travesties that the Monroe admin did (big government, central banking, high taxes/tariffs, etc.).
There is absolutely a case for Van Buren.
@@HaveButOneLife Never said there wasn't a case for extolling Van Buren's Presidential accomplishments, I said the OP didn't explain his reasoning. Just said "it's biased" and left it at that. At least you had the decency to make a case.
Personally, I would rank Van Buren somewhere in the middle, certainly not near the bottom.
@@mmjahink Point is is that you wanted reasoning and he didn't respond, so I did. If nothing more than a retelling of Rothbard's thoughts. Most people in the comments here are saying he was one of the worst, which is silly.
He also ran a street gang
He looks like Larry Fine of the 3 Stooges.
Holy shit, you're right.
I'll name my red fox Van Buren
Yo wassup jack?
Fine thank you ok 👍

Uuuuuuuu what
Trump's turn
newportman3469 wait 4 years
Biden's turn
So basically he did nothing
A for effort, but I think he just didn't know what he was doing in relation to the economy. Same thing with Hoover and Trump.
Trump economy was pretty solid before the Pandemic, Van Buren allow the economy to rebound on it's own which is one of best way to handle economy which busted due to a inflationary second bank and Hoover's goverment programs inspired The New Deal
