    This would be illegal here in Australia. Makes so much more sense to be able to do it yourself with an inspection to ensure it's safe. Really enjoying your bathroom reno.

    I noticed at timestamp 11:49 that the already existing wires to the bathroom lights isn't already fished through the wall studs and I'm just wondering how you get them to? Or is the new box that you just wired in, on that right side wall, as you're walking into the bathroom, replacing the old light switch? I hope that made sense!
    You're doing a fantastic job there!!

    As always learned something new. I was wondering how you were going to get that hole through those boards. I never knew there were extensions for drill bits. How clever! Another gift idea for my hubby. His birthday is coming up. Where can I buy extensions like that? By the way, none of us went to the hospital. Covid is horrible, please be safe and thankfully we aren't having long term side effects. Whomever said it's like the flu is full of sh#$! lol.

      Hey Peach! Yes, COVID is terrible. The paddle drill bit I used has the same end as a normal screw bit so you could use a normal bit holder extension like this... amzn.to/2Ygl2PE

    Great content! Any reason you couldn’t have brought the hot line in to the switch box then branch everything from the junction box? I think that would have saved some of that precious 12/2.

    Are you using different staples when you staple the wires to the wood? Like are there different kinds of staples for wiring?
    I’m just curious because I’ve seen in other reno videos where an electrician say that the staples shouldn’t make the wire sit flush to the wood because it can cause an overheating issue and is a fire hazard. There should be enough room between the staple, wire and wall for the wires to be able to move around but still be secured neatly.

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  Před 3 lety

      Hi, Nicole! I have never heard of that... I know that you shouldn't hammer the staples so tight that it ends up crushing the wire insulation... maybe that is what they were talking about. I just use regular wire staples that have a small plastic protector sleeve on them. Thanks for checking out the video!

  • @restuser1740
    @restuser1740 Před 3 lety

    It is very unusual that the earth wire is not insulated in America. This could lead to a short circuit. In Europe, this wire is usually insulated like everyone else.

    • @RMFistic
      @RMFistic Před 2 lety

      We leave it uninsulated so that way if a short we’re to occur within the sheeting of the wire, the closest path the current would flow to is the bare copper ground. That would travel back to the ground bus bar and overload the hot wire causing the breaker to trip.

    This might be a stupid question, but....I lived in a house that would get pinhole leaks (or worse) in copper piping. If you have a leak right in front of your electrical box couldn't it really cause a problem?

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  Před 3 lety

      Yes the pipes around my panel are definitely not up to code but it is “existing“. I may try to move them in the future.

  • @nolongeramused8135
    @nolongeramused8135 Před 3 lety

    While home wiring doesn't present any problem to me, including the panel, I wouldn't trust most people to do much more than replace a light switch. And I have to include at least one supposedly licensed electrician in that assessment as I had to go fix all his mistakes when my wife and I sold her first home. When she bought the place it was when her dad had just retired and it was his first attempt at a remodel for the completely unfinished basement. Contractor was OK with the drywall, and the plumbing wasn't a disaster (the shower insert had "problems" that it shouldn't have), but I reworked the electrical panel as soon as I saw it, then I hired a pro to redo the gas line as it was off vertical by about 15 degrees and came out of the wall for 3 feet before going into the downstairs ceiling. While I was at it I replaced every outlet and switch in the house as the ones upstairs were all from 1941 and the ones downstairs had been installed by an incompetent.
    3-Way switches wired wrong at stairs
    Ground fault interrupts wired wrong in kitchen and both bathrooms
    Ground not connected to half the downstairs outlets
    All downstairs outlets installed upside down
