- Clip from a documentary that is being developed about artist Dean Mitchell, known for his figurative works, landscapes and still lifes. In addition to watercolors, Mitchell is accomplished in egg tempura, oils, and pastels.
I have only recently come across your work, Dean. And I am so glad I did. You don’t paint, you speak 🧡
I am still in amazement by the piece you did of your grandmother entitled “ got my eyes on Jesus “ in a glimpse I stated to myself who did this . I grew up in the south and felt the spirit that he captured in this painting of this powerful subject. I grew up on the edge of what was known as the bottom. I sold mustard green 10cents a bunch from my dads garden. Little cotton topped kid with a bike and a basket full of greens. They loved me and I loved them.

Dean you are a hero. I also became a painter and have had a natural for painting black persons due to my background. I took top honors in a show in Italy out of all the American artist ,entitled “Blacks and blues” black musicians oil on canvas.

Beautiful work...I could watch this again and again...
I was at that show the Hubbards hosted in Ruidoso in 1990 and I knew who he was before (I worked for an art magazine). I regret that I didn’t get to meet him because I was already a fan of his work. Some of the greats of contemporary American realism were in attendance. I think that show helped propel him into the mainstream as well as helped further the cause of realism today. It was a memorable occasion with many great artists there.

Very very impressive!! I saw some of his paintings in a exhibition in New Orleans in 2004, some months before the hurricane katrina. Thank You for sharing this, now my remembering is refreshed.

Dean Mitchell is outstanding, classic, so talented and great in his sensitivity and presentation. I believe that he will be historically equal to all the great artists of his era, like Andrew Wyeth and Howard Terpning, artists who see the heart of what they are portraying.

The African American Andrew Wyeth.
Except that the great Wyeth only painted those actually around his own home..a microcosm. where MItchell has a broader view. I do not get the feeling that Mitchell is isolated from the world at all.
