Lesson 16, Painting the Portrait in Watercolor. Using a black and white photo we make up the color and paint the portrait in watercolor. www.stanmiller.net
this was the most amazing, simple, helpful and easy to understand watercolor lesson i have ever watched here in CZcams so far. thank you very much for sharing your techniques and knowledge, sir.
Stan, thank you for being one of very few artists who keep stressing on getting the "value" right. I knew that "value" was important, but I didn't realize how important it was. You really drilled home how much "value" is so much more important than colour. It was magic to see how you can use any colour as long as the "value" is correct. I learned a lot from this lesson!
Brilliant. I’ve been struggling with how to do these types of portrait and now I know it’s all about values, not colours! Can’t wait to try it out now!
Using a round brush instead of the flat brush would work just as well. Using a small brush and going very slow, would work great. If you work slow with a small brush your painting would simply be much more realistic.
I cannot tell you how grateful I am for these lessons. For 6 months I have been struggling with watercolors. I always thought I was good at portraiture but recently have been so disappointed and feel as though I"ve lost my talent. But your first video, on how much water should be in the brush, showed me the major mistake I've been making. Not one other video has mentioned this. And each subsequent lesson has taught me something I didn't understand. So Thank You from the bottom of my heart. You are the art teacher I have been waiting for.
Stan Miller do you ever come to tidewater virginia? I take painting classes with Betty Anglin through lifelong learners. I know we'd all enjoy a workshop if you are ever out this way.
Stan, you are the great artist and your teaching skills are simply FANTASTIC!! Lots of art books and videos as well try to explain the value subject in more or less confusing way. Your 17 minuts of Lesson 16 is amazingly clear, concise and so understandable! Thank you soooo much :-)
I've just watched this again a year later and am still blown away by the colour combinations that Stan Miller gets away with. He is absolutely correct. The colour really doesn't matter if the values are right. Blue skin ... green skin ... works for me. Once more ... thank you.
Been following Stan for years and what a super artist he is. I have often been criticized for saying that most artists use far too many colours and the colour does not matter and here Stan proves it with this super painting with no pre drawing. Fantastic!
Thank you for this lesson sir! I'm trying color for my first time and was intimidated with it at first. As long as the value is the same, the color one uses doesn't matter. Outstanding work sir.
I have just started watercolor painting, have been watching numerous artists and their techniques, from loose, flowing pieces to detailed work, but yours is the first I found on values. This was enlightening and watching how you showed it doesn't matter what colors you use but the values, well it blew me away. Many many thanks
Thank you for the amazing lesson, I'm taking a mixed media painting class in a little over a month and this was exactly what I needed to get me used to the idea of painting things with more than just one media along with making things more colorful. Thank you, it is greatly appreciated!
Wow, thanks to you Benzo, for thanking my parents for conceiving me, I'll let them know : ) So glad everyone is enjoying the videos. More lessons coming when I have time.
thanks a lot, Stan, for your video instructions on watercolor. i finally found my "aha!" moment because of you...... am almost about to give up trying but luckily found your videos..... this is amazing and awesome.... thank you, thank you!
I watched the first 5 minutes of this and learnt more essentials about watercolour than all the videos I've watched within the past 2 weeks!!!! Thanks man, I think with practice, this video alone can help me go from beginner to intermediate.
This was fantastic. The point was made beyond anything I’ve watched in the last 3 years about value and color. Thank you so much; I get it now with this video!
The values are so on point that, when you'd finished the eyes, I could already tell you were painting a person of colour, despite your only using only blues, greens and reds. Thank you ever so much for this invaluable lesson.
Outstanding lesson. I don't see a lot of watercolor portrait artists doing Internet instruction, but you, Stan, are certainly one of the best! Thank you!
Tracing is not cheating. All that matters is that you enjoy making the art. Your application of watercolor is absolute genius! You're an inspiration to me.
Stan, thank you, thank you, thank you so much! This is pure magic presented in a very simple way. I find these 15 minutes of video to be a pure gem. Thank you again.
This is a magic! The extreme importance of “value” and the accuracy of it achieved by you when seen from a simple tool of a small window, every thing is magical for me. What a lesson! Genius!
A one handed watercolor masterfully painted, without drips or bleeds, no warping of the paper...simply amazing sir It proves it can be done and that gives me hope. Thank you.
Just a "Thanks" won't be enough at all to express my thankfulness to you Sir. I was trying painting myself without any teacher until I found You. I want to Thank You to be the best teacher of an unworthy student.
Stan, I have always loved this style of painting. I have been trying to understand this technique for years as I use YT as my main art education. Your explanation of values has locked in the piece I wasn't grasping with other tutorials/explanations. Right at 5:00-5:15, I have been trying to match color when what I've been struggling with was VALUE! Thanks so much!
Stan, I can’t tell you how important this video has been to me. I have watched it so many times when I want inspiration to loosen up and carefully observe value.
So glad this lesson is helpful. It is so true, that getting values and drawing correct, if one desires a realistic painting, is very much more important then color. Most think painting a portrait is all about correct color, absolutely not. Happy painting.
Thank u! This tutorial was exactly what this returning artist needed! Omgggg! I forgot to see this way and you perfectly explained it! Now I am only seeing in values and tones!!!! Thank u!!!!!!
Dear Stan, I have been working, and I do mean working as sometimes it's very slow, on my watercolor portrait skills for quite sometime. I've watched numerous videos, but something you did in this video has unblocked a block in my painting, and for that I thank you. I had forgotten to pay attention to this all important concept of value that you made so abundantly clear in your tutorial. I will take what you have shown and try to use it. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this, you are a great teacher.
I have heard "VALUE trumps COLOR" over and over and over in my class. You have made me SEE the truth in this! AHAaaa Moment! Amazing amazing, amazing!!!! Thanks! I like the little windows to help compare value, too. The final part showing another version in different colors really drove this home as well. Your are a Wizard! Great video!
I really enjoy your teaching style. The importances you place on "values" is so critical and is the keystone to watercolor painting structure. Looking forward to signing up for a class someday.
This is absolutely amazing! I am just trying to be more expressive with watercolor and this video just blew my mind. I did not know you can have so much freedom when choosing colors!
As someone new to watercolor painting, painting people always made me nervous because I was always scared the colors wouldn't be right or something. Thank you for making me realize that the color doesn't matter! Only the value. Now I feel more at ease with really getting creative with my paintings!
Thank you for this lesson! So many people say 'lesson' or 'how to' on their videos, and then it is actually just a video watching them fast forward through creating a painting. It often comes off as dishonest or misleading, just trying to get people to click on their videos. You are the real deal though!!! Thank you so much!! Your paintings are beautiful!
Found your video, like a ray of light shining through many clouds! Talk about serendipity! Thank you so much for this lesson, the message is perfect for this student seeking the teacher.
Soooo Amazinggg!!! Thank you.... i started using water colors around six months back n have been practicing almost everyday n loving it more n more...Some things i am happy i was intuitively doing right but your lessons are making me feel so rich....cant wait to paint through this perspective...
Wow! One of the best tutorials I've ever seen. Fantastic learning experience, listening to your comments while you paint. As a beginner in watercolor, I have learned so much from your videos. I am painting right along with you. Thanks for posting!
Mr. Miller Thank you so much for this lesson... To tell you the truth I am not a painter. Not even a hack at it. Nada!!! But I can completely understand what you are talking about!. I see it as you are teaching in the videos . I'm now thinking about pursuing painting as a passion..thanks again and I will watching more of your CZcams videos...
Stan, all I can say is WOW! It was pretty darn amazing how you brought such a likeness from dabbing various blocks of paint in different areas! Makes me re-examine what I think about painting!
I feel like everyone in the comment section just had a huge weight lifted off their shoulders. Now they can enjoy painting again. Thank you for the invaluable lesson.
I just would like to thank you for being an awesome teacher! I will be taking out the watercolors I put away because I was so frustrated I just didn't get it! thanks so much for explaining it so well.
I watched this video like, a year ago and was amazed but too intimidated to try it, but now I’m ready! I love this! I have a very cool black and white photo of my son, who has a very chiseled face, and is an artist as well. I want to do this with that picture. You are so right about color. I’m always thinking about the color more than the value. Thanks so much for this video and I’m going to create those squares so I can check the values!
Thank you! I've been wanting to paint in this style and was not successful. I just drew and painted Billie Holiday and though it is not a patch on your work, I'm quite happy with it. I really appreciate your teaching style and will be looking at all your work.
Glad the lesson is helpful. Yes, if you desire to learn to paint more accurately what you see, having the reference photo close to the painting, observing carefully, is very important.
Glad to hear a number of people are benefiting from this lesson.
Stan Miller Yes, this is awesome. Thanks!
+Stan Miller It's fantastic. Now I know why my watercolor paintings sucked.

He makes it look too easy... ;)
Stan, thank you for being one of very few artists who keep stressing on getting the "value" right. I knew that "value" was important, but I didn't realize how important it was. I learned a lot from this lesson!
Yes! I absolutely second this! More than that, I value it! (Sorry. Couldn't help myself.)
@@345Express I see what you did there lol
Ty for help
Just like with humans, the color doesn’t matter, it’s all about the values
Brilliant. I’ve been struggling with how to do these types of portrait and now I know it’s all about values, not colours! Can’t wait to try it out now!
Great lesson don't know how u did that so quick and only holding the paper in mid air tho
Lol pro shit
Using a round brush instead of the flat brush would work just as well. Using a small brush and going very slow, would work great. If you work slow with a small brush your painting would simply be much more realistic.

I'm from Thailand, you're my daily teacher for watercoloring. 'No matter color is, get the value right', thank you for great words.
I've been traveling, teaching, Thailand, San Francisco, Seattle...another lesson coming soon once I'm home for more then a week...

Thanks so much PGaneri. One of the criticisms I get on this video is that I repeat "get the value right" too much. What you've said is comforting!
Masterful! Thanks for a good vid and great info!
I've just watched this again a year later and am still blown away by the colour combinations that Stan Miller gets away with. He is absolutely correct. The colour really doesn't matter if the values are right. Blue skin ... green skin ... works for me. Once more ... thank you.

It's so cool to see how people paint with such different styles and methods with the same medium. I use watercolor very differently. Love your work.
Thank you sooo much! I finally found the answer to how artists choose abstract colors successfully.

Wendy Rose same here. I’m so thankful to have found this wonderful painter and teacher.
My new favourite artist. Learned a lot from that.
Excellent demo! I love how you really focus on value, which is probably the hardest lesson to learn in watercolor.
Thanks Barb.
I can't believe what you did there! You certainly convinced me about the importance of values sir!
Dear Stan, I have been working, and I do mean working as sometimes it's very slow, on my watercolor portrait skills for quite sometime. Thank you Stan. You are the only one that I have seen teach this............,the how and why. Blessings 🙏
Great. Love your attitude toward color. One of my mentors, years ago told me how important tone is. You do an excellent job of showing that concept.
I have heard "VALUE trumps COLOR" over and over and over in my class. You have made me SEE the truth in this! AHAaaa Moment! Amazing amazing, amazing!!!! Thanks! Glad the lesson was inspiring Richard, thanks! Stan
Fantastic Stan -- this came at a timely moment when I was stuck on a portrait -- I now know how to finish mine! Thanks again. Love your work.
Thanks for posting!
I must say you have described my actions “hunting for colors”. Thank you for this! It’s all about tone and not color and technique. Thank you so much!
this is the kind of technique that i have been wanting to see for so long! thank you! am blessed! ^_^
can't wait for another video!
One of the most informative videos I’ve ever watched! Thanks for keeping the reference photo on camera throughout. So helpful.
Glad the lesson is helpful. Yes, if you desire to learn to paint more accurately what you see, having the reference photo close to the painting, observing carefully, is very important.
