In today's episode of Painting Masters we'll be reviewing Dean Mitchell!
Dean is a highly renowned American painter. He is mostly known for his figurative work, revolving around themes in the African American culture.
He works in all three media - Watercolor, Acrylics and Oils. The funny thing is that I actually loved his acrylics the most, which is why I show them first, and in more detail.
His watercolors and oils are stunning too.
I hope you enjoy this one!

One of my favorites. His watercolors are crazy good.
Great video Liron! I happen to be Facebook friends with Dean Mitchell. He is indeed a master painter! I love the simplicity of his compositions. There are so many wonderful artists out here. Hope you continue to highlight some of them in future videos as well as your own wonderful work.
Incredible ability to create compositions
Dean Mitchell is one of my top five. He comes from my area where subject matter can be beautiful or poor and a little raw. He does both. Your tutorials are the top , best of the best. Thank you.
I appreciate how you are demonstrating how to look closely at the work. I rarely have (or take) the time to see details in my life. So, the quiet pace of your talk today is very illuminating. Also, I am beginning to understand how to distinguish cold and warm colors and how (and why) using a little bit of red in a painting draws your eye in. Thanks, L.
Thanks Liron - I'm glad you reviewed Dean Mitchell - I just found out about him and I love his touch. Some notes: I think some of your viewers are thinking most of those were acrylic, esp. the boats piece "On the Gulf". If you go to Mitchell's website you will see this under Watercolors. The piece towards the end "Gravity" is an oil. One thing I would say about "Gravity" is how Mitchell intriguingly shows us the shadow side of his subject very confidently. Like you said, it is mostly empty but what a poem of emptiness it is. Another thing to point out about Mitchell's compositions is how he reduces perspective so much - showing the broadside of buildings and carefully framing and editing elements against these broad expanses. It is a nice technique and although I'm sure he can draw anything he likes, distilling down to these flat views is a really cool and quite signature device. Think Hopper's "Early Sunday Morning" as another reference to this composition type - compressing the view and dialing down to just the light and mood on a lonely wall. Lovely stuff.
Dean Mitchell is so good I love his style
I discovered this amazing watercolor artist too. He I amazing. Thank you for bringing him up to the attention of others.
Just discovered your channel. Wonderful overview/critique! Thank you!
Excellent. Thank you.
A great master of compositon, and some hidden watercolors in here :-)
Interesting i never expected you to review other mediums. I love watercolour. But i also dabble with the other mediums. Im master of none 😆 im exploring all of them as im open to discovery as i haven't settled to 1 in particular yet or maybe never who knows. Ive just been using water mixerble oils . I have discovered areas of strength that i never knew about myself by exploring all mediums. So im happy to see and hear about other works. yes make a vid of you exploring acrylics 👍
So good it hurts. Thank you.
Thanks for introducing us to this artist! You asked about Hazel - I think it's the woman's name.
Oh, yeah, my favorite is the watercolor of the street corner with the curved awning and the blue shutters. What is the name of it? Thanks.
You should check out Kristi Grussendorf. I think you’ll dig her style
Napoleon house is in New Orleans
Love Dean's work. There are some critics out there who point out Mitchell's work too closely resembles the American artist Andy Wyeth. And while I can see a resemblance I personally think who gives a shit what critics think. They can't paint anyway.
Great Video 👍🏾
This is Amazing
