Walking home from 7th grade on a cold February Friday in 1964. My friend said, "Are you going to watch the Beetles? (I thought he was talking about the bugs). I looked at him, strangely, and said, Beetles? What Beetles? He said, "It's a band playing on Ed Sullivan"." I guess so", I said. I watched after dinner at my grandparents house with the family. My cousin Linda (3 years older, so, 16) was crying because she thought Ringo was cute. My mother thought Paul looked like a choir boy. The next Monday at school, that was all we talked about. Everyone knew John, Paul, George, and Ringo - The Beatles. The World changed that weekend.
It’s funny that you mentioned that. I also clearly recall walking home from school with my friend in 1964 when we were in 7th grade, and he told me that he was going to the record store in Newton Center, Massachusetts to buy their album. I asked him who the Beatles were because I had never hear of them.

Ringo was on fire on this track. This is my favorite Beatles era. The later stuff was great too, but my childhood memories are of my sister and her friends dancing in the living room to the early Beatles records. Magical time.

I was 1 1/2 years old when this premiered. I know my mom was a huge Beatles fan and most certainly watched this show. So I believe that I got to watch this as well, but just too young to remember.

On Sunday, February 9, 1964 The Beatles performed twice. Here is the reason: Brian Epstein had made a deal with Ed Sullivan that The Beatles would play on his show for 3 consecutive weeks. But there was a problem. The Beatles had to fly back to England on Saturday February 22, 1964 and wouldn't be able to appear the next day, February 23, 1964. So at 2:30pm on Sunday, February 9, 1964 about 700 people (mostly screaming girls) were let into Studio 50 and The Beatles preformed 3 songs live in front of that audience that was taped to be shown on the Sunday February 23, 1964 Sullivan Show to fulfill their contract. In that afternoon performance they did "Twist And Shout", "Please Please Me" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand". The audience was let out. The Beatles returned to their room at the Plaza Hotel. At 5pm they returned to Studio 50 and did a dress rehearsal for the 8pm show. Then they again returned to their hotel. They came back at around 7:30pm And at around 8:05pm performed live in front of a new audience of a little more than 700 people and for all America. Over 70 million people were tuned in to hear them play "All My Loving", "Till There Was You", and "She Loves You". Then other acts preformed. The Beatles came back in the second half of the show to do 2 more songs live. "I Saw Her Standing There" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand". John Lennon was never happy with this iconic performance for these reasons: Paul sang lead vocals on 3 of the 5 songs and the other 2 John sang in harmony with Paul. He felt that people watching would think that Paul was the leader of the group. He was right. When I watched the show as an 11 year old boy, I thought Paul was the leader. They even flashed his name first when putting the names under each Beatle. John was also unhappy about the fact his mic was too low in the mix.
I am assuming the harmonic for the Please Please Me performance was pre-taped or dubbed? Maybe there's a story there. Clearly the rest of it was recorded live.
@@MarkChesak Every Beatles performance on Ed Sullivan was live. No lip syncing or dubbing as you call it. John did not play the harmonica on Please Please Me on Ed Sullivan. It was just George doing the riff on his 1962 Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar plugged into a Vox AC 30.

Excellent video, thank you !! Here we are, 60 years later in 2024, with this superb melody, tight harmony, quick tempo, and romantic lyrics. An early Beatles masterpiece ! People will listen to this one hundred years from now !!
Notice how John is singing and looking at the audience. He's not wearing his glasses so it's blinded about as a bat but the audience is relatively close and he can see the girls out in the audience just acting goofy as hell and he can see he's singing with a grin on his face it's a wonder he didn't just bust out laughing
Two minutes of sheer musical happiness. Love the look on John's face around the 34 second mark. They were having as much fun as the audience. Thank you for uploading this!
We can all argue about our favourite Beatles' songs. It's impossible for me to choose only the one - but this piece of majesty is always in my Top 5. Even without the harmonica. Beautiful.
wow, great color job! but the very coolest part of this video is to see john tune his guitar before launching into "PPM". i watch this performance just for that, over and over...
Their melancholy tunes were touching and memorable, but the up-tempo ones were my favorites. I was 10 when this aired. Little did we know we were experiencing something that would change the music and entertainment world forever.
Sadly I was only less than 3 months old when the lads made their debut on Ed’s show. So I probably slept through it. When you showed the crowd I wonder if any of them recognized themselves.
While doing Stand-Up at a restaurant in Philipsburg NJ, I learned Sid Bernstein was seated at a table having dinner with friends. We asked him to take a few minutes and talk about the Fab Four. Even in his 90s he charmed all of us with stories about the events leading up to the Beatles appearing at Shea Stadium in NY, and the Young Rascals. Rest in Peace Sid. ❤️
young John Lennon was something else, i just cant describe it. when i see footage of him in his 30s and with yoko ono, its like a complete different person. i love this early apperance so much! so full of energy!
The chord changes in this one happens SO DARN FAAAST ! lol Just finally worked 'em all out for myself - Key of E , naturally -- such a bright key, E ... ... It MEZMERIZES me, how Paul's SUCH an expert on all these changes, he doesn't even hafta look at his hands ONCE ... (A , F sharp min., C sharp min., A minor: back to E ...) etc. -- on all these rapid changes !!! Incredible ... and George and John - these luscious harmonies, eh, all?!! (THANK YOu always, GEORGE MARTIN, FOR WORKIN' 'EM ALL OUT AND ARRANGING '[EM, FOR THES 4 SUPER-POWERED SCOUSER LADS !!! ) -and Ringo's always PERFECT drums licks ... what an EXPLOSion they were ... !!! all through Hamburg and though rough, ruff, tough times ... These lads sure paid their dues. BEATLES FOREVER! ❤❤❤💗💓💙🙏
NOTE: This is an old colorization. It's not my proudest work, but I finally managed to get it unblocked, so enjoy! Color fades in at 0:08

John could only recognize people three feet in front of him. The audience would be blurry to him.
Best I've ever seen ❤
Two minutes of sheer musical happiness. Love the look on John's face around the 34 second mark. They were having as much fun as the audience. Thank you for uploading this!
Damn. They sound great
Superb! Absolutely superb‼️
🎶✌️😁❤️🎶👍
Amazing!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
I like This song❤
We can all argue about our favourite Beatles' songs. It's impossible for me to choose only the one - but this piece of majesty is always in my Top 5. Even without the harmonica. Beautiful.
Quality colorization. Nice job. Such an epic and historic performance on Ed Sullivan.
I'm sure they were nervous but u can c their joy for being there✌️♥️
Thank you Beatlealex loved it never saw a live performance of that song keep them coming
It is stunning how good they are here. The singing is simply amazing.
カッコいい~🎉👍️
wow, great color job! but the very coolest part of this video is to see john tune his guitar before launching into "PPM". i watch this performance just for that, over and over...
Five words that changed the world that night
"Ladies and gentlemen, the Beatles"
Ringo's drumming was ON FIRE during this song. It's a shame the camera showed so little of him.
Time machine back to sitting in font of an old black and white TV watching them on the Ed Sullivan show. Lives were changed forever that night.
Their melancholy tunes were touching and memorable, but the up-tempo ones were my favorites. I was 10 when this aired. Little did we know we were experiencing something that would change the music and entertainment world forever.
The Beatles are perfect. Period.
Never disappointed. Never.
Beatles forever. 😊
Sadly I was only less than 3 months old when the lads made their debut on Ed’s show. So I probably slept through it. When you showed the crowd I wonder if any of them recognized themselves.
This looks so good in color.
So tight. Power pop right out of the blocks.
That’s Beatles and that magic ingredient they have ❤
The chord changes in this one happens SO DARN FAAAST ! lol Just finally worked 'em all out for myself - Key of E , naturally -- such a bright key, E ... ❤❤❤💗💓💙🙏
Glad to know all the old people can get to see this again with their own eyes in color like they did when they first saw them
But most of us saw it in black & white back then.
The entire world was black and white back then. In 1965, a natural phenomenon happened and suddenly colors came into existence. Man, that was weird!
Those were the days.
THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME THE IMMORTAL LEGENDARY BEATLES
Off the charts great!
Fantastic
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful weekend ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
