- The Beatles performing “I Want To Hold Your Hand Live On The Ed Sullivan Show 2/9/64.”
‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ was the first Beatles’ record to top both the UK and the US charts. It was also their first to be recorded on a 4-track, as opposed to the usual 2-track, tape machine. The Beatles had the song well rehearsed when they made the first of 17 takes on October 17th 1963.
Following The Beatles’ historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan show on February 9th, the single - already at No.1 in the charts - gained further momentum. They taped a performance of the song earlier in the day of their live appearance and it was shown on the Sullivan show of February 23rd, which helped maintain the song’s popularity. This avalanche of publicity, engineered by Brian Epstein, helped the single to stay at the top for seven weeks, which made it the longest-running No.1 of their career to date (until ‘Hey Jude’).

Sixty years ago today, February 7, 1964 The Beatles landed in America. The following Sunday night, I was one of the 73 million that watched them in TV. My late parents gave me Meet The Beatles album for Valentine's Day.
That's right. 60 years ago - amazing. I always wondered if JFK wasn't killed would the Beatles be so huge. America was in a funk and the Beatles brought us out of it
That's so cool. My mom once told me she'd "never forget seeing them on The Ed Sullivan Show". She was so young that she had to "stay up past her curfew" to watch it. A wholesome story that I'll always remember. ☮ & 💟 to you! 🙂

One of the most important, if not, THE most important moment in Rock ‘n’ Roll history
I feel that way when HERMAN's HERMITS performed I'M INTO SOMETHING GOOD on TV for the first time. It was their first top 10 song.
Elvis and the Beatles on Ed Sullivan . . . Doesn’t get any bigger than that.
I remember reading how the Beatles' arrival inadvertently caused the end of many careers in the music industry because music taste shifted so drastically afterwards.
Hmmmm, I don't know that it was the most important. Close, but the onset of Elvis pushing the public appearance envelope with his pelvic moves is definitely in the running. Elvis nearly got banned from broadcasts in the U.S. after his first live tv appearance. There were nearly full on riots over that news.
I'd have to say they are about equal. IMHO
So my grandmother has Alzheimer’s disease, however, she still always remembers that the Beatles are her favorite band. So I decided to play this song for her, and she immediately started to sing along. It was one of the most heartwarming things I’ve ever witnessed.
Edit: She died October 17th, 2023 due to lung cancer :')

there have been experiments done on old people with alzheimer's. playing them their favourite music *ALWAYS* had positive effects, even if momentary. so, it's not just heartwarming, but beneficial, too. so on with the records, give your grandmother a smile :)

Yes, I was watching too. It was my parent's anniversary, so we all finished dinner and watched the Ed Sullivan Show together. "All My Loving" was the song that persuaded them that the Beatles actually had something, and after that Beatles music became a daily standard in our home. I was 6.

its crazy to think that they lasted only 7 years and completely changed music forever
At that point lasting 7 years is a good long run. Bands lasting decades and decades was not something anybody imagined. One day at a time, right?
Real
Oh please…
And to create all that great music within such a short period of time. Today, it takes most artists and bands two to three years just to make one album !
@@robertbykowski1398 only if you’re tool, but let’s break it down. The Beatles wrote the most simplistic pop songs, each 2 minutes long with no challenge. Easy and quick to record. Tool has some of the most complex metal there is, several 15 minute songs carefully crafted with lots of detail (and I’m sure these songs involved lots of failed takes and overdubs given how hard they are to play). Figures why Tool takes so long to record an album while the Beatles made multiple albums in one year…DURR🤪

Excellent. John did however find Happiness in the end but that only lasted the last 2 months of his life. He brought so much joy into the world with his music that he could've see the forest for the trees. Angry - Bitter - Negative - Unhappy man. Very sad
@John Deegan You have no idea what you're talking about. LoL! 😂😂😂 Just kidding. All well known by us Beatles fans. Again, excellent examples of John's life which made him: John. His last 5 years he may have found that happiness with Sean. I believe he felt used and abused by the world - they/us/we wanted more from him. But he took time off for himself - but he being John, had to comeback. I actually think his writing got better in the end. Don't you? I can't imagine the amazing songs he would've written had he lived. Most likley partnering with a NY Rapper like KRS One and no doubt reuniting with the boys for Live Aid. 16 years is all we had of him. 1964 to 1980. 16 years that's all. A tortured soul but a given one as well.
I'd say people grew up a lot faster back then.
We still have 18-23 year olds making music but now it's all lazy-ass trash rap. People seemed to...develop their skills at a much younger age 50 years ago...

My mom was 5 years old and has always told me the story of watching them on Ed Sullivan for the first time. All of 5 her siblings along with her parents and my great grandfather, who rarely watched Ed Sullivan but he made sure to watch that night because he had heard so much hype. They all crowded around the television and she said by the end of the first song the whole family was hooked. My great grandfather kept saying “son muy buenos, son muy buenos.” Which translates to “they’re really good, they’re really good” . He barely even spoke English but he understood good music when he heard it! So much so that the following day he took my mom to the record store and bought her the first Beatles album which was a huge deal because my mom grew up very very low income so to spend the $1.25 on a record and not on food was like WOAH. And she was so grateful, and she gifted that exact record to me when i started getting into the Beatles as a teenager and i have it hanging on my wall to this day. I like to say I’m fourth generation Beatle fan☺️
I was 6 and their performance of "All My Loving" that night persuaded my folks to admit they had some real talent (we all watched it together, just like your Mom and her parents). Beatles music became an acceptable sound around my home after that. Moreover, my parents (like millions of others, no doubt) liked that they were well dressed and sharp looking (they utterly disliked Elvis Presley's image and style)

And what is your point, Madame G-Mother? Hopefully, it is that a lot of us older senior citizen types were on top of "what is cool and new" back almost 60 years ago. We all were just as hip, with it, and musically attuned as these little weed-smoking, nose and tongue piercing, anything goes ingrates who slander and defame their parents and grandparents for being out-of-it, unhip, stupid, neanderthal, closed-minded, etc. I don't have grand-children but adult children and we're close to 70, but we enjoy the whole catalog of Beatles tunes as you say you do. Wonderful. The world would be not the same without these music from the boys and the love, they gave us all.
Fun Fact, Ringo Starr is more than a good drummer. In live performances like this, Ringo genuinely couldn't hear the vocals and music because the girls kept screaming their heads off. So he kept his rhythm by watching John, Paul and George's movements.
Wow cool info thanks
Not in that concert. But yeah, in Shea stadium he couldn't hear nothing.
That's also why he invented the matched grip method because no one could hear the snare drum because of the screaming girls.

be 3 minutes like that again. ever.
Oh yeah, I'll tell you something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
Oh please, say to me
You'll let me be your man
And please, say to me
You'll let me hold your hand
You let me hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
And when I touch you I feel happy
Inside
It's such a feeling that my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide
Yeah, you've got that something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
And when I touch you I feel happy
Inside
It's such a feeling that my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide
Yeah, you've got that something
I think you'll understand
When I feel that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
Baby Boo 👍
Baby Boo thanks
Wow! I didn't know your feelings about me. So you wanna hold my hand, huh?
Baby Boo h
nowadays it's something about strippers n money
Love them soo much. Check out George's face at 1:38 when John goes off key Priceless,
Lucille Gm your right at 1:38 it sounds like a completely different key ...and it still sounded great
Mr. Nick They are the best! I remember my older brother being astonished when he heard this while we were watching them on the Ed Sullivan show. He was a musician.
When I heard this video, it dawned on me, that this was what he was talking about. He loved them too and laughed so hard that this amazing group could make such an error!
Doesn't sound like John went off key. He harmonized on a different note which looks like it caught George off guard.
Your right he plays B minor but sings it completely different
Had Enough That might have been the case but it's completely different than the original harmony. Let's just agree that it all sounds great.
And the world was never the same!
this is the best. the absolute, hands down best.
Shush, grandma, I want to hear them sing
Nacho Cheesecake omg I can actually relate
Omg I wheezed
Lmao
Grandma is at 1:05
We're not related we have different grandmas
A friend of mine who is older told me a story about when this performance aired on television, he was a boy about the age of 9 or 10, his father being a much more older and stern man, never gave a wack about the rock stars like little richard and elvis Presley, he was more of a jazz orientated music lover. But as soon as he saw this live on TV, he was glued to the screen, and he could not stop admiring them. As soon as the performance was over, he said, "they're some pretty fine musicians aren't they? They have a future going for them."
Yeah my mom used to listen to my band in the basement and yell down stairs "turn that racket down" ..... we did play Beatles songs pretty well back in the 60's !! If my grand-kids were in the basement playing today' s rapcrap......I'd have to yell down stairs the same thing~
understandable since the beatles (specially paul mccartney) mixes some jazz in their songs.
Dad thought the same Tull we saw Elvis in Vegas in '69 coming back from Hawaii. Movie making made the Beatles number one in entertainment instead of him. They said they were more loved than Jesus which broke their spirit in the end.
Your friend's dad was a good judge of talent and a rare and fine man. About 99.9++% of the older generation hated them and considered them anti-music.
Mike Scott Singh John said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, and he was right at the time. It was only the outraged American conservative bible belt Christians who started burning albums and effigies of the band, also conveniently using the outrage (that they had created) to demonise the Beatles championing of black music and black musicians (because Jesus was a racist, right?). John was simply expressing his opinion, but apparently his right to freedom of speech is only relevant if it agrees with the same people who believe that the earth is 10,000 years old and evolution is a myth.
Robert Pitman hit the nail on the head when he wrote about Americans inability for introspection and the hypocrisy at the fact that a country that claims to be so staunchly Christian is the most Godless county on the planet. Bible Belt bible bashers can't actually see (either by wilful ignorance or sheer literal stupidity) that the type of hate and violence they promote is in direct contradiction to everything Jesus taught. Real Jesus, not 'Conservative' Jesus.
Oh, can you explain how deciding not to tour anymore 'broke their spirit'? Firstly, that decision was judged solely on the fact that they could hear their own playing over the screaming... over the next 4 years they produced more albums than they had in the previous 9, including some of the most iconic records ever made. Sgt Peppers, The White Album, Abbey Road.. how could they write and record some of the best music ever produced before or since with a 'broken spirit'?
Those lads from Liverpool changed our music culture 4-ever!
I was 8 years old. Most of my peers were parroting their parents dislike for the Beatles. Not me. I knew they were kool and I loved every minute >>€
That's so cute, I'm 17 years old and I still love The Beatles ❤
If CZcams existed in the 60s, this video would have over a billion views.
Some of us would have been on the computer all day 🙄
Yeah I think
Maybe a trillion
So true and kids compared One direction to the beatles like wtf? Bruh
Just think about the population and technology back then compared to now
I was 14 yrs old when this happened. I was glued to the tv and I knew from that minute, that was what I wanted to do with my life. I joined a band and played through high school and into college. My dad kept saying what are you going to do with your life and I kept saying, but dad I'm going to be a rock star and make lots of money! Well all went well for awhile, then life got in the way. I got drafted into the army and got married and had kids and a job and life goes on. I always listen to music from the 60's and dream on, I think that the 60's music makes old people still feel young when it is played today. I would never give up what I have in life today, but I will always dream what it would have been like if I had made it like the Beatles.
old guy Man that was really beautiful, thank you.
Old guy, your words are very nice.... you have described your feelings in a good way... Beatles are so nostalgic and brings fantasy for all people that weren´t in "old times"....
I love your username bro
I was negative 47 when this happened
Im 18 and i have those same dreams just a complete different decade
The beginning of a musical "Tsunami" from the UK that would change the course of music forever
60 years ago today!
John Lennon's greatest quote of all time:
"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life."
He never said that.
@@lucasoheyze4597 Yes, he did. You have no proof to the contrary.
It is unsourced but has been accepted as genuine since the 1960's.
@@gmail4218 As you say, unsourced...so where and when could he have said it for it to become so widely known if it's unsourced? Use your brain instead of your sentiments!
@@lucasoheyze4597 You claim that he never said. Have you listened to everything that he said? The quote is anecdotally sourced to the 1960's. It is more legit than any Shakespeare quote, none of which are sourced.
@@gmail4218 Yes, but those are quotes from works published under that name, nobody's quoting things he said in conversation. If John had said that in an interview somewhere, or was quoted by somebody else directly in an interview, at least one of the thousands of Beatle researchers out there would have found it by now...John did give a lot of interviews, but not so many it's beyond finding.
This is very like the "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in The Beatles" quote widely attributed to John, but actually said by comedian Jasper Carrot...it sounds right, so people accept it without looking into it further.
I love how happy Paul always looked during these days.
Little did he know in 16 years his best friend would be murdered and 20 years after that his other friend would die from cancer. I hope Paul and Ringo still keep in touch
Paul genuinely liked performing. I always got the impression that John did not.
Before the Beatles stopped touring Paul always encouraged that “music should be played live” - Paul McCartney. When the other Beatles were already getting sick of live performances.
@@MsMystie3K Paul still loves performing. He still does three hour shows. Never takes a break and never takes a sip of water.
He probably missed doing this everyday
I was in 3rd grade, and I loved them, and still do to this very day!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah YEAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!
I return to this song to remind me of when I fell in love with them for the first time ❤
Best damn band ever, period.
I gotta go with Queen on that. Followed by the temptations.
true that
The Beatles did much more for music than Queen and certainly much more than the temptations.
Flame war?
Fair enough..
