- The Beatles performing “Twist & Shout” Live On The Ed Sullivan Show 2/23/64.
For the many who witnessed The Beatles’ early appearances on British television, this song is synonymous with those exciting era-defining times. The power of the band’s performances and the recording owes so much to John’s searing vocal. For their debut album, John recorded his vocal in one take at the end of a marathon recording session on February 11th 1963.
In July 1963, ‘Twist And Shout’ became the title track of the band’s first EP to be released in the UK. According to the advert on the front of New Musical Express, it was “The record you’ve been asking for”. A week after Twist And Shout was released it made the EP best-seller list and a week after that topped the same chart staying there for ten weeks. This clip was videotaped in the middle of a six-night run at the Odeon Cinema in Llandudno, North Wales.

Ringo just in the background, smiling and doing his best. Give this man more recognition
AMEN
He is my mostly firstlly favourite beatle
Yeah ringo honestley just cant stop smiling he does this in all the live performances still to this day!
Iconic
@@avatomasik742 Ringo was always the happiest Beatle and I love that about him. Even when he was really down, he wrote Octopus’s Garden. One of their happiest, most peaceful songs. Gotta love that spirit. Paul was also a very happy guy, but he also had plenty of times where he was worked up. Lennon and George seemed to struggle with being happy a lot more.
Fun fact: Sometimes, when performing this song live, John Lennon would sing “I’m pissed with gout” because he couldn’t be heard over the screaming audience.
He also purposley didnt wear glasses so he wouldnt pay attention to the crowd. Lol
I think that is the reason why they stop touring. The loud audience and the girls.
@@bluepinkman4785 ye back then they didn't have amplifiers loud enough to be heard over the screaming girls and the Beatles were getting frustrated so they decided to just stop as well as the fact that a lot of their later songs were recorded with multiple different tracks and instruments which made it difficult to perform those songs live. Also after John Lennon famously said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, Americans stopped coming to their shows so audiences were often half full so the band made the decision to stop touring.
Dean Anderson I know I’m not saying it’s not true, it probably was, but is was still a very foolish thing to say and it turned a lot of American fans against them
AHAAHAHHAHA😂😂😂
My grandfather used to have this song as his ringtone. He would let it sound and sing it, then he could tell you the story of this band. Miss you grandpa! ❤
I was a teenager in those days. It was the best time ever.
Every time Paul and gorge do the whooooo thing the girls go crazy
ever heard of a hum job?
George*
That's not called 'wooo thing'. Its called *harmonization or chorus singing.* Every song has it.
Sir Paul McCartney Said in an interview that They began to milk it because it made girls go crazy back then.
Ah, but there have been times when audience members got free tickets and were paid to to be crazy.
God, I love the raspiness of John's voice in this song 😍

John's voice was taking a beating. This is my favorite song and fav singer. They were here at just at the right time. Plus they were great entertainers.

Did times change?
My parents are massive Beatles fans so I’ve heard this song a million times but for some reason I’ve only just realised how incredible John Lennons vocals are in this song, unbelievable how unique his voice is.
John Lennons rasp in his voice during this performance, with the accentuation on the final lyric like “mine” and “out” is just simply.... beautiful
One of his best vocal performances, he also does lovely bluesy twists on ‘baby now’, sublime.
Those were real talented singers and composers !! You don’t wanna know what kind of bullshit people listen here in Dominican Republic
His raspy voice was awesome.
😍😍😘
@@josearturobaez Everywhere in the world, bro! Wish folks would listen to more of the oldies, back when real singers were popular!
The Beatles literally went from the biggest "boy band" in history of music to the most artistic, influential band in the history of music in just 8 short years.
Don't forget George too
you are right after the beatles every pop song sounds the same
And drugs had nothing to do with it. Or did it?
They were not a boy band, a boy band is usually when one is singing and gets all the attention and the others 'don't matter'.
Love the beatles
I don’t know why but this performance makes me feel really happy. I wasn’t even born in this era and I still feel like I was there.

The throat would forever plague this great man.
Might wanna look into that. I think you’re thinking about when they recorded the song in the studio.
The audience going absolutely ballistic, the boys on top form, all looking genuinely happy to be there. You don’t get that kind of alchemy any more. Brilliant.
This is the greatest 2 minutes in rock and roll history.
Imagine being so beloved you can’t even hear yourself perform.
LAwren2200 nope what??
I'm sure they could hear themselves just fine here
Some preformers wear ear plugs to help them hear themselves and not be drowned out my screaming. But if you have ever been on a stage with people screaming an dplaying music, the istruments drown out nearly everything (from my experince, not that I preform all the time, it was a one time thing :P)
I can only imagine my dad lived in this era and said it was amazing the whole cultural phenomenom behind the bans

John's voice sounds so good here
Love the gravely ways of Johns voice!
It sounds nearly identical to the studio recording in which John had once mentioned that it was the last song of the recording set and his voice was was going out on him. I think it just added to the exuberance or vibe of the song. Lennon didn't have a voice like Sinatra or Elvis, but he had a voice that was like no other at the time. That's part of what made him so great. McCartney has a unique voice of his own also but Lennon's leads are BY FAR my favorites.
(Deleted)
he always sounds good, come on man
Not only here, always
My sister’s generation loved them first. Then years later, I loved them. My grown daughter now is infatuated with the music. Wow.

I’ve always wished I could spend a day in the 60s just to see The Beatles in their day!
I was a teenager then, but you wouldn't believe all the negative comments made about them and how they had "long hair" and were misleading the youth. Poor Elvis couldn't have the camera show him below the waist, since he didn't stand still on stage. Colleen Corby was the most popular teen model and made so many commercials on TV.
NOPE ONLY US SPOILED BOOMERS---

John's voice is the best in rock/pop ever
Totally agree.
Either Lennon or Elvis I'd say
Lennon had one of the most soulful voices ever in pop/rock.
I have always believed that the two best voices of the rock & roll era belonged to John Lennon and Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops.
Ehhhh. Paul is more soulful.
Noddy Holder had a great voice as well
@@Rudenbehr Paul had greater range for sure, though John’s voice has a much more soulful, melancholy quality in my opinion. The blend of them together is what makes Beatles magic possible.

I was 15 years old and the still point in the turning world filled with rock and roll music forever.

sure were also extra police on patrol
+Mark Mullins Thanks for the details-Very interesting. I didn't know they performed two shows on the 9th, with the intention of airing one of them two weeks later. So let me see if I understand correctly. They performed the show to be aired on 2/23/64 first in the "afternoon" New York time on 2/9/64. Then, later that same 2/9/64 night, they performed the show that aired "live" before the record breaking TV audience? Therefore, they would've had to have performed that show at around 10pm New York (est) so the west coast viewers could see it at around 7pm (pst) on CBS? If I'm correct, this same time slot would apply to the Miami show on 2/16/64.
+Mark Mullins I just thought of one last thing. I'm wondering if at least some of the people in the studio audience on 2/23, were disappointed that they didn't get to see them perform live and in person. Instead, they were treated to a taped recording from two weeks earlier shown on the studio TV monitors. Meanwhile, the people watching at home just assumed it was live.

John Lennon:
“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”
Nothing is more important in life than being happy. You simply can't self-improve your way to being content. If you've done your level best in life, no-one can tell you that you have failed.
Great comeback, John, as usual. He would know about wanting happiness. His childhood was so tumultuous. He had so losses, and then, when he seemed to have achieved a degree of contentment, he was murdered. What a tragedy.
