    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

      Elvis was kinda like Eminem. Rock and roll was very much a thing before, but like with Eminem, what was once an art often performed by black artists and relegated to black audiences really broke out into the mainstream and became something EVERYONE listened to.
      And like Eminem, Elvis was also actually very respectful when it came to crediting their influences and inspirations while doing well distinguish himself and his art. As far as the "stealing" of black music and exploitation of black art and artists goes, that falls squarely on the record labels.

Its funny from our perspective now, that controversy-wise his performance was nothing compared with what ppl do onstage now. He was just being himself, feeling the music, and at the time, audiences had never seen anything like it. Ive seen the recent movie as well, its a shame the direction things went in later years for Elvis (to no small degree via Col Tom) but the gifts Elvis provided us will bever be forgotten!

      Yes, well put. Thank you. I know people get angry that he got famous and made big money off of songs that were originally written and performed by great black musicians. But I do not blame Elvis for that. I blame the industry for wanting a white version of those incredible songs, including Hound Dog, of course. It's not a happy situation, and Elvis did try to give credit where it was due, most famously, I think to Fats Domino, saying HE was the King of Rock and Roll, not Elvis, at one of his Las Vegas shows where Fats Domino was in the audience. But I agree that he was not a "cultural thief." He heard something in the black music where he lived that compelled him much more than the white pop that was going on at the same time.

      @nycsue Před 3 měsíci +4

      @@nspector The Industry for the most part wanted nothing to do with him. It was Sam Phillips who used to record black artists who recorded Elvis and Elvis touring city after city, state after state and then the infamous Tom Parker getting hold of his contract and became his manager that got him to go nationwide. Elvis took a lot of abuse by reporters, parents and even variety show hosts who had to have him on for ratings. Elvis stated that his music was a blend of country, blues and gospel. Yes, these were his influences as this is what he grew up around. The young people loved it, but nobody else did until he got drafted by the damn military. RCA then loved the money flowing in when they signed him to a contract.

      @@nycsue Yes, you're right about most of the industry in the early days not wanting to do with him, Phillips being the one who was not put off by him sounding black. And you're also right about the way he was treated by reporters and most of the variety show hosts. I do think ultimately, though, that he was, controversy and all (or maybe *especially* because of the controversy over him), a marketable white artist who could bring regional and black music to a huge audience.

Talent, looks, charisma - it's a shame they tried to tamp this energy down, and make him 'family friendly' then send him off to the Army when they couldn't do it - imagine how much more his star would have shown if the Colonel would have encouraged his talent rather than suppress it!

    People need to understand what this video represents. You are seeing the first superstar in history. The moves he was doing on stage had never been seen before on television. They were common in the south (where he was from) but conservative adults had never seen anything like this. It was exceptionally provocative. MANY church groups, parents, conservatives rallied together to boycott Elvis. They even had a class-action lawsuit against the Ed Sullivan show for broadcasting "such filth". This is the birth of rock and roll. You hear those girls screaming constantly. This is really the first time that had happened in history, especially for television. Some doo-wop singers were famous/handsome and the girls would get excited over them but Elvis was such a different story. He was such a disruptor in the 50's and singlehandedly changed the culture of the nation.
    If I recall correctly The Ed Sullivan show was made aware of the dance moves that Elvis was going to do and the FCC or someone wanted a close camera angle on his upper body so the audience at home would not be able to see the dance moves. I believe the show ignored that and showed his entire body, which results in an FCC lawsuit. I could be wrong about the details but I recall there was significant controversy PRIOR to the show deciding to go with that camera angle.
    You can see that up until @1:13 they stay with a close shot and they INTENTIONALLY slowly pull back and then Elvis does his moves.
    Elvis also keeps laughing while singing because this fangirl thing was new to the world. He likely thought it was ridiculous how crazy they were going.

      Agreed on everything except the "birth of rock and roll" part. This song, for example, was originally recorded by a black woman, Big Mama Thorton, and then they brought it to Elvis. It was common for white artists to crib from black music in order to mass commercialize it. I would say this performance was the birth of the first true pop star, but Elvis should not get credit for the birth of rock and roll.
