The Beatles - All My Loving - Dutch TV, 1964 [Colorized]. With Jimmie Nicol on Drums.

I had to use an alternate audio source because of Apple's copyright policy so this is The Ed Sullivan Miami Rehearsal audio
The original audio was them miming to the studio version of the song, so they aren't actually playing

The Beatles performed on Dutch TV in 1964 and mimmed the songs with the studio version recordings. Ringo does not appear in this performance because he was hospitalized with tonsillitis and had them removed. Jimmie Nicol was a substitute for Starr for 13 days. He was known as the "Beatle who disappeared". - Zábava
I have a feeling that most people do not understand or appreciate the fabulous rhythm guitar playing by Lennon. Boggling.
I concur. I have been playing for a very long time and watching John in this I realize I never thought to strum like that, not in any song.

Incredible
George and Paul's harmony is unreal.
Yes!
I love that Paul harmonizes with himself on the recording, but it is cool hearing George's voice in the live versions
I know a lot of people feel like the Beatles peaked in their later years. Maybe even in their solo careers. But for me... this will always be their best days. When you could see the joy in their faces and hear the soul in their songs.
Fax, they are Soo happy in their early era 😭
Yep. My favorite period too. 70 now. I lined my walls with posters from 16 magazine every month - them, the DC5, Herman, Kinks lol. About 2 years from this performance they are sick of it and quit the road for good. You can see and hear it in their no longer happy mugs in the press interviews of '66. And of course when they quit the road they were no longer a "band" and it was the beginning of the end. But for me pre moustache Fabs were the BEST. 🎸
Same. Agree yes. I’m 70 and those glorious early days still the best for me
They were so cute back then.
I love hearing George sing with Paul at 1:13. I have never heard this version before. It is usually just Paul singing. This is a good version, love it.
no they still do harmonise in the recorded song
@@maxwoodsevans yeah but both parts is Paul singing on the album version

george singing the "standard" lead, and paul singing the high 3rd harmony. check for other live performances and you'll notice george's voice better.
@@maxwoodsevansThere isn't any comparison to the recorded version to this version. We can clearly hear George with Paul. As I stated, I love this harmony of their voices.
Their Washington performance of this song is nice. Paul's mic isn't loud enough so you can really hear George.
George was so cool. A unique talent overshadowed by the genius of paul and John until he got the chance to bloom. And boy did he.
He was never overshadowed. The 4 of them glowed one way or another
@@gerardomartinez8314 Yup. 👍
He was - but the more impressive talent on this song is actually John. The precise rapid fire 16th note chords.... that's harder to do than George's fairly bog standard Chet Atkins style solo.
In my humble opinion, the most technical musician in the band... An introspective intelligence... my favorite Beatle...

Jimmy Nichol, to his credit, never tried to unseat Ringo by an over-the-top performance. He was clearly capable of making such a play.
Yea, it's just an assumption but he could've understood what they were going for with their music. You play for the song and that's what Ringo did, Nichol's wanted to honor the groups style which is very respectable for sure.
Imagine being defined for the rest of your life by a blip, eight shows. Strange. Glad he got one on TeeVee.
The way George kicks into the solo is fantastic.
John Paul George and Jimmy...😳Ringo was ill with tonsillitis...Jimmy Nichol on the drums here....George Martin quote..."Jimmy Nichol was an excellent drummer who learned all Ringos drum parts with short notice...then disappeared into obscurity."
Oh wow. I bet he relived that day for the rest of his life.

He's doing a better job than Ringo imo

George is awesome. Not just for harmonisation on the guitar chords and the maturity of the playing, but also the vocal harmony in the verse, which is really beautiful.
however; I was just reminiscing and listening to a few versions, and I think that vocal harmony might be Paul’s, with George singing the melody! Which makes Paul, once again, a musical genius.
@@craniofacialsurgeon This is great standard which is a unique flower of its own bland in which they were helped by people in Parliphone ,George Martin and others...Times when they used to go through a lot of listening and checking out all those world music recordings and classical composers...Spoken by Ringo in one of the interviews back in 1980s and also I have heard it from the guy who was employee back than 1963/64 in EMI...The basis for the verse of this song comes from Tchaikovsky and his "Swans Lake" thats that haunting beauty of the melody...Chorus is Motown inspired most likely original...guitar solo by George is his own take on Chet Atkins and his hybrid technique (later on Clapton and numerous others will bring that into pop and blues). Verse Russian influence is accentuated by John Lennon and his Ricky simulating sound of balalaika (just electrical)...crescendo /vivo style as you could hear them playing like that on their journey down the great Don river... Harmony's on chorus pure Motown girls band but on the last two verses it George and Paul being influenced by Everley Brothers and Apalachan close harmony where Paul accentuates and changes vocal position twice in order to sing in more unison with George in that particular part...Bland of the right ingredients brought the new sound...not to forget Paul's melodic bass line which is probably the greatest compliment to the song itself...the biggest invention together with those loud drums...Ringo would be more on the cymbals and high hats though Nicole was heavy on the bass drum and snare and toms...Work of the genius that whole song...and they have paid homage to all those musicians back in America that were they idols or influencers but in totally new sound...

George just looks like he is having the time of his life up there. He was on 20 at the time and the youngest of the Beatles.

John's strumming, no words I can describe it at all.
I'm a rhythm guitarist, have been for 44 years. There is nothing easy about John's playing in this song. But he makes the strumming look effortless. Incredible...
It's not that hard to strum at that speed, but it *is* hard to keep a grip on your pick (plectrum), and if you drop it you have to strum using your nails, and *that's* hard.

Ringo ... A lefty on a right handed set. Gives the sound a lot of swing.

John’s rhythm playing here may be my favorite rhythm guitar riff he ever did. Like a train on course that will not be deterred. Powerful. I love it.
This is one of the few Paul songs that John doesn't trash, probably because his triplet over 4/4 guitar part is so unique and ands so much to the song
I like how he looks up at the fill in drummer as if to say: "Are you doing ok up there"? 😊
@@FairfaxJack Amazing how many guitarist I have worked with can't get that part right, they can't play the triplet! And it did take me a while to get it down, it's not easy.
The couplets come out really equal and it is much faster than you think! It had something to do with that early banjo applied style he began with? ,but he was also a shrewd dude adding a kind of percussion beat. What can be said is that it's a form of attack which he used now and then. Not easy to imitate.
Yeah, it is also my feeling
That guitar work by John is a true masterpiece. Not many guitarists can play that part flawlessly...like John. It's amazing how he seems so relaxed and "makes it look easy."

The first time I saw the Beatles was late night on the Tonight Show w/Jack Parr. I saw it with my mom waiting for my dad to come home from work. It was a pre-recorded session not here in the USA. I remember my mom and I were saying they look like girls with that hair. When they finally came here to the States on the Ed Sullivan Show, I had a Beatles (Sosh) haircut and you know what? I was in 6th grade. At the end of the year the school took us to the roller rink. They lined us up Girls on one side and Boys on the other playing the Beatles and Monkeys and when they told the girls to skate over and pick a guy to skate with, my favorite girl that I had a crush on picked me and we skated together to both the Beatles and the Monkeys. One of my favorite Beatles songs, this song and performance encapsulates everything that makes the Beatles so good, the way the bass explodes out of the gate (how does he gets that booming bass sound? And it doesn't interfere with the rest of the instruments or vocals and yet, just pulses along!), the vocal harmonies (Paul harmonizing as George takes Paul's vocal line), the incredible triplet rhythm of John, the varied E chords in the turnaround, and George's double stop picking straight from the master himself, Chet Atkins.
