The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

1:21 idk how to explain why and how much i love this shot. it's the way brian's eyes wander around, the silly humble smile he has while he sings. his stance, his expressions, just everything about him is so bright and pure it's extremely endearing and beautiful. i'm not a big fan of the beach boys even tho i like their music, i just watched love&mercy and ended up here, so please excuse me if i'm being unfair to the other members. but i can visibly see the difference between him and the others. the other members seem to just enjoy and play the music while brian is mesmerised in the notes. i wish i could see what happens in his mind. he's one of a kind fr. so inspiring.

Mike sang all the low notes on every Beach Boys tune, he was quite a rarity in that, a lead singer and did all the bass lines in the harmonies.

People give him flack because of his nasal singing, but almost every surf singer had a nasal voice. Brian chose him because he had the voice for the California sound.
Not to mention he was capable of writing beautiful songs himself. Listen to their song "Big Sur" which is one of the most beautiful songs the Beach Boys ever recorded.
Shame he wasn't fully on board with the kinda music Brian wanted to make, considering he had a talent for it himself.

Brian is the heart and soul of the Beach Boys. His falsetto is one of the most recognizable voices in all of rock and roll.

Can't believe this wasn't lip-synched. You can tell it's not by how it ends abruptly instead of fading out. Really tight performance. Of course, you better bring your A-game to the Ed Sullivan show. I bet they were nervous as fuck. Especially with all those nice cars right there lol.
It’s absolutely incredible. The slight tempo increase makes it! ( naturally happens when playing live I know ).
Carl's lead guitar licks and solo sound more pronounced and twangier. I always felt the lead guitar on the studio version was kind of buried in the mix.

I'm not saying Mike has no faults. While Murry Wilson was managing the band, Mike was constantly after Brian over his lack of writer's credits for the lyrics he wrote. He should have went directly to Murry with his beefs. He's also an admitted procrastinator. Puts things off to the last minute. And his HOF rand was ill advised.
But "detest" him? There is too much hate in the world. If anything, Mike deserves credit for staying with, and touring with the band, keeping the Beach Boys going as a great touring band doing the group's classic music.

It's like looking at a time before the modern concept of coolness existed and these boys are trying their best to bring it into existence.
"I Get Around" is one of those rare one-of-a-kind songs. Like "Friday on my Mind", "Strawberry Fields" and "Summer in the City", it's so unique it can't be compared to anything that came before and sure as hell didn't produce any spin-offs. I must say this is one hell of a live performance, because it's a pretty intricate arrangement.

She was te only thing that mattered to me other than music when I was in high school. She was beautiful, sweet, funny, a great person, and she was smart enough to break up with me after six years! LOL! BTW as an added bonus, she could scream the, 'Baby, It's You' part, in the song by Smith, perfectly! Loved that gal!

For all those "Mike-haters" - great example of what makes the Beach Boys sooo awsome: Mike's wry delivery of relatable story-lyrics in contrast to Brian's out-of-this-world natural falsetto. It's a Band, it's a mix of great talents!
If the big musical decisions had been left up to Mike Love the band's success would have been a fraction of its eventual success. Mike fought Brian's genius and instincts at almost every important juncture, and then did his best to exaggerate his own contributions, including suing Brian. Brian was 80% about the music, 20% being a star. Mike was the reverse.

I am learning a lot of the reclusive, tragic artist, the writing and studio prodigy Brian Wilson. And then you see this, he seems genuinely happy and confident, front and center on stage.
I 100% agree with you, but the confidence was really just a face. According to Brian himself, he was always freaked out on stage. A guy that sweet, humble and shyly nervous could never fully enjoy himself in the centre of attention.

20's beach party
It's crazy we get to see a random moment in 1964 brought to life. The way Ed Sullivan introduced them and the way some TV presenter introduces a band tomorrow are exactly the same. It is putting this performance right up against any other late night performance in all of TV.
How can you not love The Beach Boys?!

They should have just let Dennis record the drum parts instead of getting studio guys. He sounded fine here, plus he added his own style.

James Brown, Jackie Wilson, The Temptations, The Four Tops etc. I love The Beach Boys but they can’t dance, most of the white people in that audience couldn’t even clap on beat, never mind dance well 😂😂
@@eric.dangerfield Mike Love is considered one of the best dancers of all time on the same level as James Brown, Jackie Wilson and Michael Jackson. Look at how complicated his dance moves were in this video, and he had a youthful haircut/hairline as well all of which clearly drove the women in the crowd wild.
This was my "boy band" before N*SYNC. XD I loved jamming to these tracks when I was little!

Brians falsetto on the chorus has always made me quite literally happy, or my version of it, as of late in the last few years ill even break into tears , and feel very regretful or remorseful..I truly hope that this man does fully grasp how important on a spiritual level even to many, that his music has been, and shall remain. Thank you Mr. Brian Douglas Wilson, sincerely, and in truth.
