I am that patient with fast healing and high pain tolerance 😂 got both feet done at once (chevron osteonomy) and was off pain meds one week after surgery. I guess I'm the exception that confirms the rule

Funny, I don't have bunions and yet here I am watching with interest...
I had SEVERE bunions. Had both my surgeries at 19. I'm a cna heavy on my feet went back in a month started walking in a boot at 2weeks. I only had 2screws put in we did discuss doing the more severe permant surgery you talked about the last one but I needed to get back to work as soon as possible. My surgeries both went wonderful
I’ve never had surgery before and my bunion is starting to bother me but I’m not in any pain , it just goes numb when walking but surgery is my fear because I’ve never been put to sleep , problem is I do fitness everyday at my college and I don’t want to miss 6 week to months to get fitter

Your comment about age and bunion surgery is very important. I have had pain for years and was urged to avoid surgery. My physical activities decreased due to foot pain. Now at 64, I had severe spurring - a fragment broke off and was in the joint space. I now required both a cheilectomy and lapidus buionectomy. Thus I suffered for years, and ultimately had to have two surgeries and a long, painful recovery because I was urged to avoid surgery at a younger age. I was not obese and in good health, but the recovery has been brutal since I have knee and sacro-iliac joint arthritis.
Absolutely unfortunately pain is not normal and sometimes we see people power through it and only years later is the true safe of arthritis appreciated
Any joint pain in general is not normal and our bodies are not designed for chronic pain without more permanent damage.
I'm 29 now and have had bunions since I was about 14. The pain gradually increased, and right now it's not literally unbearable, but what you're describing is exactly why I'm thinking of getting it done now
@@DrAlchem01 I’d say get it done if insurance covers it. I just had it done 2 days ago. Pretty sore right now. But it was getting worse and worse as the years went on, waking me up some nights. I put it off as long as I could. They told me at 21 I would need surgery eventually I’m 35 now.

I am having the bunion on my left foot removed at the end of June. I had my right foot done back in 2019. Now the bunion on my left foot is causing me severe pain. I hope the bunion on my left food isn’t as bad as it was on my right. I was bed bound for 6 weeks.

Austin, Texas…toe fusion with the plate and screws or Great Toe Arthrodesis: 6 weeks in the boot & off the foot. It is stiff after and this is the 5th month. I’m supposed to be doing the other foot next month if I don’t delay lol

I do competitive kickboxing and i am trying to decide on the best surgery. Obviously with kickboxing you do a lot of kicking with your instep. And you need to have good flexion in your foot and toes. If anyone has experience with this, or if you do competitive sports, I'd appreciate any feedback.
Had an bunionectomy with distal osteotomy on one foot first about 7 days ago I also have a high tolerance for pain didn't need any narcotics medication better than what I expected. I just got anxiety about my foot being wrapped up

Hi, thanks for your videos. I’ve just bilateral scarf akin procedure 12 days ago. Bandages are off and I can just move toes a tiny bit. Surgeon said he doesn’t usually advise physio as they push too hard, what does this mean? Should I do physio and if so how long after surgery? Thank you

What type of bunion surgery is it when your big toe ends up being slightly shorter..I had dissolvable screws and the surgery was done in '99. Back then CZcams wasn't around, but since then I've watched lots of bunion surgery where the bone was cut, but the big toe didn't end up being shorter.

My toe surgery with the right side of the foot greatly reduced the pain and the pain with the toes on the left side of the foot are next to be straightened
I have been a ballet dancer all my life and now also a swing dancer. I'm 61 years old in great shape and go ballet (no point shoes) and social dancing regularly. I worked as a physical therapist for 38 years. My right bunion is really bad, the big toe tarting to cross and rotate. I'm planning to do a lapiplasty but really hesitating as I need to get back to dancing and are scared this is just going to finish me. I'm want to do exercises with the ankle and foot NWB as soon as possible after surgery so I don't develop tightness and muscle atrophy and maintain aerobic capacity (on a stationary bike for example). How feasible is it for me to get back to dancing after this surgery, will it take a long time? Will I be able to do ballet? Swing dancing is very physically demanding. Will I be able to do get back to it? Thank you for your help!
I am a ballroom dancer age 71 and I just had a mild bunion correction. I am hoping that I can get back to dancing in about 2 months.
If I may - DO NOT get any fusion surgery if you hope to dance again. You won't be able to ever again. Go with a simple Osteotomy! I found out the hard way :)
My doctor suggested a crossroads metatarsal osteotomy. What is a crossroads? is it less invasive than a Chevron? He said I should be back in a shoe at 6-8 weeks. Does it involve any at home therapy that I should do?

I have tried all kinds of orthotics and nothing has worked i have been in pain for many years now I am going for my first surgery after having covid-19 twice last year a severe lung infection and Shingles being misdiagnosed for 3 weeks I know I can get through my 2 bunion surgeries and 2 carpel tunnel surgeries thank you for your video.

hello Dr I had hallux valgus surgery (bunion) last year and I became disabled because of the operation because the surgeon did not fix the phalanx and the toe it moved a lot more than before the operation and the little toe they are formed in claw metna I I walk with difficulty with crutches I have a strong deformation with a dislocation on the left footdo you think the surgeon made a mistake not to fix the phalanx? for that the toes are more moved, thank you for your quick response cordially Juliana
Hi Juliana, generally, this is a difficult scenario to advise as this is a complicated problem. In general, the phalanx would not be fixed in most cases (although it is an option). Iff, a patient, is still too sore from walking; it is too early to determine if there is a problem, as the muscles are still tight, swollen, and painful. I had a minimally invasive bunionectomy with a seri akin osteotomy 3 weeks ago today, it has went ok for me so far with some pain here & there but I only have taken my major pain meds twice - once was when still at the hospital because my block wore off quickly and then the day after I did and that’s it. Been just ibuprofen at times when the pain woke me up from sleep and it helped actually. Getting the stitches out was absolutely terrible for me and that night the incision area hurt and burned like crazy but the ibuprofen still helped. The nurse at my doctor said I’m pretty “tough” so maybe my experience has been easy or I’m tougher than most idk.

I have bunions since I was born on both my feet. My right leg wasn't as bad, but my left leg was arguably a bit worse than the right. Sometimes my Bunion hurts if I walk too long, and because of that I also feel more comfortable wearing basketball shoes. It doesn't hurt that much

i have one, that’s just getting worse and worse. it’s become more painful the past couple months and it’s increasingly getting bigger and bigger. i’m only 30 and i’m a single mom with two kids, work with elderly people as a HHA and i’m PETRIFIED. i’m so scared.
Can you still workout after this surgery?
Eventually after the surgeries heal, this can take 3-6 months or so depending on the workout

Huh, as it turns out I'm an ideal candidate. No wonder my podiatrist was so keen on doing the surgery, LOL. (It seems to be going pretty well so far, although I am *desperate* to start hiking again. I just keep telling myself that this is a bad idea and instead doing non-weight bearing and arm exercises instead.)
I had bunion surgery over 10 years ago and it went very well. No pins left just one outside that was removed after 3 weeks so nothing foreign in my foot. Now I just have a slight bunion, if you can even call it that. mostly not perfectly straight. Any device I can use to not have surgery? I don’t need surgery just want my big toe straighter.

Is it true that Lapiplasty 3D is the best surgery? My doctor insists scarf is better for me as Lapiplasty might cause future problems and I have a moderate case.
There is no such thing as a best surgery, there are more beneficial surgeries for different situations. Lapiplasty has branded itself as something new and "different" due to rotation of the bone (Plus having 3d in the title makes it sound cool) but I don't think you will find many doctors that would agree that it's the best for all situations. That being said it can be very good for the right patient, but can be bad for the wrong situations, and I say this from experience. Trust your doctor's evaluating you and ask them these questions.
I would definitely get a second opinion. I need to get a bunion surgery on my left foot. I think the lapiplasty looks like the best fix. Some of the other methods look more like a hack job and not a fix.

i got mine this week. no you do not stay overnight, i had mine at 4:45am(i know super early) and i got home around 11am, it was a quick in and out surgery and painless. Although the healing part is painful, im on day 6 and it’s definitely getting better but still can’t walk. i’d say after 3-4 months youll be back to normal
I had the lapidus procedure approx. 3 months ago and now my big toe won't bend 😔
Personally I have seen a lot of swelling in some people even at three months and it gets better. Personally I have also broken my toe and for 6 months I couldn't bend it(I thought it was forever) and the swelling eventually went away and it worked great! Work with your surgeon and see if it's still swollen, it can take up to 1 year in some cases if it was a big procedure.
@@DrTomBiernacki thanks for the response. I've been doing some research online and I'm not seeing any other provider that actually shaves the bunion and add a staple to that particular area. I think that's why mine isn't bending but I could be wrong 🤷🏾♀️
A common staple modication is called an akin osteotomy, this can be a common procedure with the lapidus bunionectomy. Always check with your doc if worried, but swelling can be common by 3 months!
In fact the title picture shows the modication, but it's a lone screw in stead of the staple

The complication rate is generally in the 5-10% range over time that the implant will loosen, become infected or creat irritation.
I've had bunions my entire life. Every person on my maternal side has them. They're horrible.

Guess i am screwed.. Both feet bunions, but only the right really giving problems. I work for myself and can't even really afford surgery, nevermind staying off my feet for more than a month.. I am also 46.
I can't bear to be in a foot cast in the summer months
I'm recovering from my second lapidus & akin surgery, and am a little surprised because I never got a cast. I healed super fast this second round and am a little worried because I have been putting weight on my heel quite quickly (four weeks post surgery), walking fine on heel now 6 weeks post surgery. No swelling, no pain. I hope I haven't ruined anything. Looks great. Going back to work week 9, if the surgeon clears me in week 8. 🤞However, I'm 39, taking all my vit D and mostly chilling at home. Perhaps that helps.

Hi understanding that it is not recommended by doctors, can you wear high heels after a lapidus bunionectomy surgery where there is plate and screw hardware? How much mobility will your foot have?
Why would you want to do that (aside from special events)? Stay away from anything that caused or aggravated your condition.

A reminder to not eat or drink min 8 hours prior to surgery would’ve haloed tremendously. Unfortunately my nurse only mentioned to not eat. Lol is all I could do when feeling the drill go through my metatarsal.

I want to preface by saying I love your explanations, except this one. I had a bunionectomy and it was the one with the plate. I am SO GRATEFUL my surgeon DID NOT RUSH ME into a “dressing boot.” I had a cast. Recovery was a b*. It was a year. Much prefer the safer route of keeping me in a cast. DONT RUSH ME/PATIENT out of the cast. That sounds like it’s just for saving money.

I have bunions - both feet. I work from home and only put on athletic shoes to go for a walk. - Every day, I don't need to wear heels anymore- just here and there and not too high. I am very active and I don't have pain, So I am not willing to not be active for months in order to fix a cosmetic issue
You don’t need surgery if it’s not affecting your participation in life activities
Just wanted to add, I worked on my feet for a really long time, 40 years, I went till I couldn’t wear shoes any longer so just my 2 cents, and I always bought the best shoes, I am 63 now and because I waited so long it ended up being 3 big surgeries instead of 1. It was about quality of life and at my age definitely not cosmetic. I wish you well with with yours.

This doctor is wrong about the Lapiplasty surgery. Just had it done 18 days ago. 10 days after surgery i was in a walking boot putting full pressure on my foot. I was encouraged to put full pressure hours after surgery. Lapiplasty is the only way to go for bunion surgery as it corrects the bunion and not just a bandaid like the other procedures... Lapiplasty all the way!!!
Since you've done it such a long time ago, could you let me know: if you are able to feel and move exactly as before, if you can wear any shoes (high heels included) without problems and finally, if these metallic screws or whatever it is they add on the bones can cause problems on the long run? Appreciate it..
@mattshadowsfan777 I had surgery a little less than a month ago, so I can't quite answer your questions yet. I'm still sore, still swollen, and still have numbing. But with each day, it gets a little better

I got Chevron osteotomy with Hyprocure for my flat feet.. My podiatrist said that my bunion is caused by my flat foot.. Thank god it is a flexible flat foot or he would recommend for flat foot reconstruction surgery.. I'm 6 weeks post surgery.. He put me on cast and I'm not allowed to step on that foot until he allows me to.. Can't wait to be able to walk again 🥲

My surgeon gave me sick leave for four months from civil defense. Those boots are no joke. You'll probably need at least that long. Good luck!

Why don't you tell the people that if you have the rods put into the joint you won't be able to move your big toe and if you are unable to ware attractive shoes because your big toe has no joint in it, so it will not bend. You can never wear any shoe with a heel higher that maybe...maybe 1 1/2" at the most. NO HEELS ladies. Make sure your surgeon tells yout that. My stupid ass surgeon never told me any of the results until after I had the surgery. I was so excited to be able to wear my beautiful heels. He is an ignorant quack. I fully regret the day I even went into his office. I was never told about any alternative types of surgery other then "putting" rods in my foot...which I asked him not to tell me as the actual surgery made me queezy . I just wanted to know results, but he always changed the subject for some reason. So I am stuck with a left foot that is paralized. I am unable to move my big toe as he fuzed the joint. I had to get rid of all my beautiful heels. If I need to get down on the floor, as I live alone and do a lot different things aroung my house, it is difficult to get up as the toe will not bend and help my rise, I only have the right toe to push me up. No this "quack" only saw $$$$$ had not consideration for me as patient.
That can be a downside of the first metatarsal fusion for sure. These can be tough options in some cases for sure. We're sorry you are having pain and hope you can find some relief.
