    I'm so glad there's somebody that has come up with ways to combat bunions. All I've been told is that you have surgery later on when it becomes really bad and it's caused by shoes that are too tight. I've very rarely worn tight shoes or even high heels, and I've grown up rurally, mostly barefoot much of my childhood, so the usual "squashed feet" doesn't apply. The idea that it's maybe atrophied muscle/posture misalignment - maybe from years of standing incorrectly (as I've spent far more time on my feet in life than not) - sounds far more plausible. Thank you for this new knowledge!

      Same I grew up barefooted everywhere by choice and my feet are the same as this woman's in the video. I have such a bad pressure sore that's been there for years that its not even a pressure sore anymore it's worse and so messed up

    Had bunion surgery in 2013 and the bottom of my big toe healed incorrectly. I started compensating by walking on the outside of my foot, which led to knee, hip, and back pain and arthritis in my feet. Six other doctors say there is no way to successfully fix. Having surgery was the worst thing I could have ever done. I'm going to do these exercises to prevent my other foot's bunion from worsening.

      Sorry to hear this, unfortunately there are sometimes complications with surgery, which is why we try to avoid it if we can and think prevention is the best cure.

    This is very helpful as a 30 y/o climber. Ive been dealing with a bunion in my left foot for a while now and have been trying a lot of things. I'm just recently learning about using these muscles 5:25 It's already helping, thanks

      Yes, those rock climbing shoes put the poor toes and feet into a squashed position. We have seen a lot of rock climbers over the years. So glad it is helping already

      You have probably done this but I will throw it out there. There are alternative ways to lace shoes and boots to relieve some of the pressure put on bunions. I have been doing that and it helps with pain. I just found this video today and plan to try this.

      Yeah, I'm coming off of a torn retinaculum injury from climbing and I'm finding that the most painful part of surgical recovery is my big toe. I'm going to try these to see if it helps. the exercises at the end interestingly put some strain on that retinaculum ligament so I'm hoping these will help!

    Hallux Valgus is a very complex deformity, mechanically and progressively speaking. Studies show that it mainly happens for heredity characteristics and use of innadequate shoes. The ligaments and the tendons chronicaly act to worse the deformity, making it more rigid and less funcional, involving the adjacent articulations. Silicone spreaders do not alter the progression of the deformity. As manually holding each toe in the 'right' position for 30 seconds doesnt. These structures tend to be strained for multiple times your body weight for thousands times a day, simple by walking, living your life normally. Treatment should be focused physio, mainly for strenghtening those structures, addequation of shoes, and that might be the most important part, and surgery for many many times is considered the ideal treatment.

    because of climbingshoes I developed some bunions. Not as much as you can see in the video, however I got some troubles with rolling off my big toe. I use the fasciae ball every couple weeks and do the last shown exercise along others to strengthen my toe muscles (you can do them while sitting at the office, lying in bed, etc, after a while it kinda goes unconciously). This also helped my left flat foot to become more normal again. Im also not wearing tight socks anymore and have a pair of "toe shoes" which do feel much better. Took me a couple of month but you can allready see&feel a difference. However i think its important to not only do exercises but also change your shoes accordingly!

    Best way I found was to put one fat rubber band around both big toes whilst feet together, then as you keep your heels together pull apart slowly your feet and the rubber band straightens up the big toe as they pull apart, do this when at computer or watching TV! Cheap as,works a charm👍👍👍

    Massaging all around the joint with Castor Oil can greatly aid in the 1st Step: "Unlocking/Loosening"..... Massage regularly and often. Castor Oil has anti-inflammatory properties.
    Wear the silicone toe separators/aligners in your shoes.
    As this condition affects "flatter" feet more frequently, choose minimal, or no heel elevated, shoes.
    If arthritis is a problem, avoid the "nightshades" family of vegetables (Tomatoes, white Potatoes, Peppers, and Eggplants). These plants have powerful inflammatory anti-nutrients called Lectins and Glyco-alkaloids which can attack the joints.

    Should have mentioned as a pre-caution when doing the last shown exercise, that muscle in the arch of the foot may start to cramp up when it is flexed like that, that's because it has been weak for so long and now it is activated. Usually I would flex it, then relax and stand on that foot to release the cramp. But cramping is a good sign!! 👍 That means the muscle is finally being worked and activated!.

    Thank you for posting this. My podiatrist basically told me to get a $400 customized shoe insert to "keep it from getting worse" but didn't say it could be corrected.

      There is some evidence orthoses do help and are commonly used. We see that as a passive option, which is great, there are also active options too - such as taping, using a splint/or spacers and exercising the muscles that maintain the alginment

    I got a bunion from wearing pointy shoes as a girl. They were fashionable back then. But only in one foot. Watching this video I realized that repetitive massaging of the connective tissue between the toes will work. I know this in my bones! Thanks for the informative video.☆☆☆

      Same here!! It’s only on one foot which is so strange. I wear a toe separator that I got from a local store. And I’m slowly able to spread my toes out now without touching my foot. Before, my toes wouldn’t even spread but the bunion isn’t even that big 🤷🏾‍♀️. I hope I can avoid surgery but the look of it is so annoying.

      No one in my immediate family, grandparents, uncles, aunts, has bunions, but I just got them about 3 yrs ago.
      First in my right foot, and now my left.
      I don’t wear heels, or tightly fitted shoes either.

      We also like Correct Toes, but have found some clients find the plastic too hard and uncomfortable, which is why we designed our silicone to be extra soft and comfortable = more likely to wear them for longer

    I purchased a silicone toe separator. It was working until I started breaking out in blisters. I'm allergic to latex, and now I'm allergic to silicone. But if I can pop my toe joints, it helps relieve some pain.

    I had a bunion on my right foot for years, it got gradually worse and affected the second toe, that became deformed and painful as well.
    Eventually I saw a surgeon who told me it had been caused by the muscles that were not supporting my foot as I walked causing my foot to be misaligned. He said tribes of native people who had never worn shoes had the same problem.
    I had an operation and the big toe joint is now fused and the second tow had to be pinned to make it straight again. That eas around 20 years ago.
    I also have to wear a shie insert to help correct my feet as I walk otherwise the problem would reoccurr.
    Not a simple problem at all!

      Possibly yes, the mobiliser has a much narrower "knob" to really fit into those hard to reach places. As a Physical Therapist, sometimes my fingers can't get into the tight areas

    I started using a toe separator between the second and third toe. That works wonderfully. The padding at the bottom of the foot behind the toes would get sore after a day of standing. After using the toe separator on both feet, they are silicone and come in pairs, my pain from the developing bunion diminished significantly. I can't wear the separators when I am out but I am always on the lookout for a way to make that happen. Chafing is a huge problem if you separate your toes with anything other than silicone.

      I wore silicone toe separators for 2 years after developing a bunion because I wore a therapeutic boot and my leg was shorter for 6 weeks. I eventually had surgery but the angle wasn't correct and now my second toe is over the top of my great toe and I need revision surgery and surgery on my second toe which has become a hammer toe. It isn't as easy as you make out.

      @@fw6667 My second toe on each foot is a hammer toe which makes them shorter and the ball joint under those second toes is not in contact with the ground. This makes the big toe joint bear more weight. So I would be interested in any suggestions to help bunions when the second toe is a hammer toe.

    Hi Andrew! Great video! I have a bunion on my right foot that has not yet been painful, but significant enough that it's pushing the other toes over, and can become almost numb or tender (not sure how to describe) by end of day. I have a small one on the left, which hasn't been too bad yet. After years of wearing heels as a young woman, now as a senior I wear only comfortable footwear with large toe boxes. I got "Yoga Toes" many years ago, but have not been consistent when using. I can only wear them for about an hour while sitting (impossible to walk or sleep in - they're large and chunky), before I can't stand it anymore. They certainly spread out the toes, but toes return to former positions pretty quick. I like the idea of the Flamingo Toes, if that means I could wear them more often. I assume you would recommend the later over the former? I've been trying to use single silicone toe spacers a few hours each evening. 1st thing in AM, I massage both areas with liniment, and surrounding areas too. I also developed my own stretches of the big toes, while sitting with feet together in front of me on floor, stretching toes 1st toward me, then towards each other, then curling under away from me. I will add the ball method you demonstrated, and the strengthening too. Thanks for all the great information!

Yes the original toe spacers I first tried on myself were enormous things that you could not walk around in. I could not stand them for very long and the same as my patients. Where as Flamingo Feet are wearable, which is when all the magic happens- using them walking around

    Hello Andrew. Thanks for the great educational videos about bunions. I recently started using toe spacers and wide toe box shoes. I realize each patient is very different, but if a male patient has a small but quite painful bunionette, roughly how long does it take for toe spacers to start having real impact? It would seem like when the toe splay is damaged over decades of poor choice of shoes that it will take quite awhile for toe spacers to have a real impact?

      Hi there, thanks for the question- yes it depends on various factors including how long it has been like that. I continue to be amazed at how rapid some changes seem to occur when you remove the forces acting on a joint. Sometimes just a few weeks see some pretty impressive changes. That being said, it can take at least 6 months of regular work to really maximise results. It also depends on what else you are doing. Massage and mobilising the feet is a crucial aspect in my opinion too, then of course strengthening the muscles and lower leg muscles. Finally, exploring higher up, ensuring hip mobility and gait is optimised as well.

    Thank you for this video. I've already had a bunion surgery on my right foot when I was 14 abd they said I'll need a surgery for my left as well but that hadn't come. I'm 32 now but have this issue again on my right as it was before. None of the doctors ever mentioned that I'm able to do something to my feet... so I'm really greatful for this information.

    I really appreciate this video.. I'm going to see if I can buy a toe spreader as it's only on one foot and as well do the exercises recommend.. It's certainly worth a try.. To me doing this is better than surgery.. That's me.. Everyone is different

      Flamingo Feet are a little different, softer silicone, but also its really important to add in exercises to unlock your entire foot, then strengthen the muscles.

    Although I don't have bunions I am trying to strengthen my feet to change my gait to forefoot strike so I walk better and have less knee/hip/back pain. I love the silicone toe separators but so far have failed to be able to using them for very long or to walk with them. I really slowly worked up to 2 hours not moving but the next day my toes hurt so much I can't do certain things like tucking my toes or bending them to come up from kneeling. I think it's because of arthritis in the toes. How can I use the toe separators better to help straighten and strengthen my feet? Should I just wear them for a short walk (15-20 minutes) instead of wearing them while not walking?

      Wear them for short periods just 20 mins is fine for a while until the toes are not sore after wearing them. Gradually build up if you can. Importantly also massage the arch region daily using a massage ball for 5-10mins .

    Hi, I do “downward dog” pose everyday alternating the weight between my two feet for 16 times.
    It did not cure the bunions, yet it has slowed down the process dramatically.

      @@jc110106 awesome, the downward dog pose does so many wonderful things - in relation to bunions, the fascia connected to the toes and arch is part of the superficial back line. So there is indeed a connection between your feet, right up to your scalp! So keep going - brilliant

      Thank you for your video of information about bunions. Both my big toes swing inward and I loved the info on how to straighten my toes. I use my big toe to push under the other big toe. It's stronger and I don't have to bend over. I also like the comments. They helped me out as well. Thanks again for this information. I'm going to send this to my family.     Hello freestyle feet. What is that star shaped tool, and where can you find one? Also what are your thoughts on K-tape for bunions. I have been taping my toes or wearing those flamingo toe things for about 2 weeks and I often get tons of pain in the joint and need to remove it. However I have discovered those mechanical massaging gun and that helps the pain . Should I push through the pain or take them off when it starts to hurt?

      The star shaped thing is our custom designed foot mobiliser. We designed it to get into the small gaps between the metatarsals to address chronic muscle tightness in those key areas. Take a look at freestyle feet.com.au for those products online. It is normal to experience some discomfort when stretching joints - take them off at that point and build up slowly to allow adaption. We love K tape for bunions and use it to address hallux valgus deviation in the clinic all the time . We have a taping video on this channel- check it out.     2. Look for postural restoration exercises and do them
    3. They will help with other issues as well as bunions (which come from the foot hitting with the wrong kind/amount of hip rotation)

      I've started researching the "Q-Angle"....I do yoga and have bunions. I try so hard, but my knees never properly align in Warrior and such poses. Apparently a wider Q Angle (common especially in women with wider hips) can cause problems all the way down to bunions! So now I have been doing a lot or work on alignment and it seems ro be helping. Thank you so much for this video!

      Great question - we suggest to most of our patients to spend a total of 15 mins morning and night to see improvements. Ideally, this can be doubled - 30 mins morning and night really makes some quite rapid changes

    What about if there is a pes transversoplanus and the hallux valgus developed as a consequence? What should be trained first - the adductor hallucis for reconstructing the transversal arch, or the abductor for the hallux valgus?

      Great question - to be honest, I would look even further up. Ensure adequate strength in the larger, more capable muscles. Tibialis posterior, gluteus medius and the deep hip rotators - to ensure upstream is adequate in terms of strength and capacity. Then I would focus on alignment of the great toe - straight and work on flexing. This works both the abductor and adductors.... brilliant question.       It's unlikely to be heredity. It's more likely the modern shoe design, which tapers inwards and pulls the big toe with it. In cultures where western shoes were introduced later, there was a clear onset of bunions after people started to wear modern western shoes. No record of them before. Japan in particular has good medical records before and after modern shoes. I'd encourage you to look into minimalist shoes, which are designed to fit the natural human foot shape (that is, straight line from heel to big toe)

    people feet become like this because of the modern shoes we're sold, luckily there is affordable and even more luxurious minimalist/barefoot shoes, im never going back.
    Stop listening to shoe commercials that design shoes to make our feet deform over time.
    When the foundation of anything becomes compromised, the whole thing collapses, that is why the older we get the more painful it gets to walk and oh my goodness there's just so much hidden info people.
    Please, save yourselves and do your research, question the things advertised and normalized.

    Andrew, freestyle feet, believe me I have tried pretty much anything and everything and I've worked hard to keep my situation under control, however I have an avulsion fracture of my hallus, 1 year. The rest of my toes are going out of control. I'm very limited because I cannot commit to 11 weeks on a knee walker. I have found open-toed shoes with velcro to be very accommodating with my splints Etc. I have found that when I don't wear my splints/assistive devices for a day or so my toes Meander even further. Fortunately I live in the Gulf Coast and I can get away with open-toed stuff. I would love some feedback! From ANYBODY that's been there!!!

      I started using "yoga sandals beech originals" back in 2007 or 2008 for my bunions and completely reversed mine. I started wearing them around the house in small increments of time. I think initially I could only wear them for 10-15 mins at a time. I increased the time where eventually I wore them constantly in the house and even started venturing outside with them. I actually get alot of compliments when im wearing them to my surprise as they are a bit odd looking but very comfortable once your feet get adapted to them.
      Our feet are weakened by the shoes we wear as people tend to wear shoes that support the feet when our feet are the support structure for the rest of our body so the feet need to be strong. I wear shoes with no support now and a wide toe box to keep my feet strong I even own a couple pairs of leather soled shoes for grounding. I hope this can be of help to you.

      @@saperevedere8102 thanks for the thoughts. I have been purchasing ABEO 'shoe' products, ie sandals, flippy type shoes, and they are great. Only thanks from 97° down to 84° is that I can exist in open toed shoes because with all these prosthetics on my toes I couldn't wear anything else!!! I know I still need to do something else. EVENTUALLY!! I guess I need to work on finding some physical assistance because I NEED to rectify MY BROKEN TOE before my entire foot is USELESS!! I like being on my own but sometimes things become rather challenging!!!

    @freestylefeet interested to know how you deal with the functional dorsiflexion stiffness commonly associated with this deformity, since that's one of the primary causes of deformity progression. None of the things in the video address that. (Note: functional stiffness is not the same as passive dorsiflexion range).
    I'd be keen to know how many bunions you do fully correct. You are careful to say at the end "will it correct all the way.... we're not sure", but presumably you'd have some simple statistics to suggest a rough percentage that do?

      Good questions, thanks for your comments. Yes, you are right, we don't address functional dorsiflexion stiffness - are you talking at the ankle or the great toe, as in FHL restriction? Either way, in the clinic we use functional positions and sustained holds - after testing many variations - things like a downward dog pose works really well, but needs to be held for 60 seconds. Sometimes we vary this, to include toe dorsiflexion too. Gait re-education is also part of it. We go into much more detail in the Banish Bunions program- an online follow along at home course. Which has a lot of stretching examples in it. Rough % of correction, say 40-50%, but it is wildly variable on things like - existing deformation, motivation/commitment from the client, tissue tensegrity (hypermobile for example have a poorer result), cost of treatments - the list goes on. I hope that helps answer your questions?
