Djibouti, a small but extremely strategically located country in the Horn of Africa, has become the focal point for various foreign military powers since 2002 including the United States, France and China. They have the remarkable distinction of being the only country in the entire world that plays hosts to both US and Chinese military bases. In fact the two bases here are so close they could play footsies with each other, only separated by 11 kilometers or a quick 17 minute drive.
Both the United States and China are now competing for favor with the nation. Since 2009 China has been Djibouti’s largest trading pattern. The nation is now heavily indebted to China through their belt and road initiative.

Key concepts from this video:
-Djibouti is small and weirdly shaped, but strategically located.
-The French were the first to penetrate Djibouti.
-The United States is currently all over Djibouti.
-Everyone has to pay if they want to be in Djibouti.
-Everything passes through Djibouti.
-The Chinese have been doing naughty things in Djibouti.
Thanks ... now I don't have to watch the video 🫡
Wow. Djibouti gets around.
You’re my favorite person now
It's somalia
Geebooty
Assuming that soldiers from all military bases get local leave, it would be interesting what happens in the local pubs on Friday night!
We didn't get leave when I was there, it was treated like a combat deployment (most units there are QRF for Somalia or other countries)
It's Djibouti, you ain't getting leave unless you bring a battalion to watch your back.
Ahh yes the local totally not insurgent Hotspot pub
@@quarkedbutt3957 Agreed, that's what my neighbor had said. He got posted there for 6-7 months and they weren't given leave.
He also said it sucked but tbh he said it sucked everywhere but Germany lol.
Never order the "Chained to the Plumbing" on special cocktail at the local dive bar.
The _"Djibiouti"_ line from the beginning of Wedding Crashers is my favorite part.
The Americans and Chinese are in Djibouti??! Well I hope they don’t go to Uranus next…
You made me snort my coffee out my nose.
Man, and here I thought I was the only one going to write a funny comment on this video😂❤
@@5eant_better luck next time 🤡
haha 🤣
Now that's original 😂
A fight of both bases would be like a game mode of conquest in Battle field 4😂
As a US Marine Air Traffic Controller I chuckled when you used stock footage of Air Force ATC radar scopes (STARS) while you were talking about “intelligence gathering”. If you ever want to do a video on Marine Air Traffic Control and Expeditionary Air Traffic Control I’m your man.

I think the 30mi x 10 mile scale was off in the illustration. Those countries are hundred and thousands of miles of coastline, the Red Sea is 1400miles at its longest (thanks Wikipedia).
ha, I saw that and was like uhhhhh
Yes I caught that too.
He was referring to the Bab -el mandap straight at the entrance of the Red sea but the graphic was as long as the whole Red Sea.
I don't know how most people didn't point that out. Stuck out like a sore thumb, I'm like "31 miles, where tf did that number come from"
Come on T&P you gotta correct this one.
bab al mandab strait is somewhat the size announced but its confusing af that graphics guy draws lines on whole red sea length
I’ll always remember Djibouti because I got to see Topgun Maverick while I was there.
i'll always remember djibouti because of that 24hr subway. christmas dinner? ruined, get on a plane. thanksgiving dinner? throw your plate away, get on a plane and eat combos in the dark. BUT...i was flying to djibouti and i knew that 24hr subway would be waiting. all was well.
@@toodlepop I ate more Subway while I was there than I have in my entire life. 2AM on the way back from working out, grab a sandwich and sit on the sidewalk to use the WiFi and call my wife. One of the few things I looked forward to.
That 31-mile (50km) bar scale at 04:00 into the video is so far "off" the mark it doesn't pass the 2 second "what?" test.
Great info keep up the good work TY
My cousin is in Djibouti, thanks for covering this! Really helps me understand the local situation.
*Well researched* content sprinkled with the right amount of *humor* presented with high quality *media & animation* . [standing ovation]
Nice video Chris. Great information.
In February of 1966 I was a passenger on the P&O ORONSAY sailing toward the Suez Canal with a scheduled call in Djibouti BUT . our call was cancelled due to some unrest there and all these years later I have never had a opportunity to get back but as they say , " the more things change - the more they remain the same .
Also on that journey , the only Chinese boats we saw were the Junks clogging Hong Kong harbour housing the people fleeing Mao's Wonderland .
So you are saying that your Djibiouti call was cancelled and you haven't had another in 58 years? That's depressing man. Lower your standards!
Keep up the good work young man
I trust this guy the most out of All of the geopolitical channels! Keep it up man, great work
3:58 I'm always amazed at how y'all get things wrong in your graphics.
Bro I was so confused for a second like I know I ain’t seeing that right
What? You didn’t know the Red Sea was only 31 miles long😂
Does he even check
I watched an episode where he mispronounced something…😂
And an Opsrey is a helicopter. I'm not complaining: I love this guy's schtick. He obviously slaps these episodes together in a hurry: it would be stunning if he didn't make a few minor errors.
You’re bad ass buddy. Love your content. Head and shoulders. Head and shoulders
Very informative video! Thanks mucho.
I can understand any base wanting to restrict airspace above itself. Especially adversaries.
Also can the US and Chinese soldiers have annual Olympics and competitions in non contact sports in Djibouti
Classic spy vs spy shenanigans. Not surprised someone being head of Intel being pissed while messing with each other in non violent ways. Let petulant neighbors.
Firefighters are clearly a different department from both fronts and have no bias on that front. They just want to take care of emergencies.
We invited them last year. State Department said "NO!"
@@philkoth2198see my thoughts the joes want to get along while being competitive but, the higher ups don’t.
@@luzhang2982
exactly.
The head of intel just sounds pretty fckknn petty.
Like how being able to fly over a military base (let alone one owned by an adversary) is somehow a requirement and that the US is entitled to it somehow yet when you do that over theirs or even try to attempt to near theirs, they'll be as pissed of or do far worse than what China has done.
Like that time the US shot down an airliner
Love your work here in the comments to help your channel!!
I was deployed to Djibouti '05-'06. Great spot.

It's a pretty smart move on Djibouti's part. Having so many military bases, American in particular, guarantees that there will never be a coup or serious uprising against the government there as long as they continue to host them.
You think hosted countries can't sponsor coups?
@gandydancer9710 that's what the 7 other countries are there for
@@amistrophy Do you think that that's an answer to my question?

that image sums up the houthis very well
So what your saying is that china's getting all up in Djibouti 😂
Doesn't seem like they can reach it either way 😂
the infographic at 4:05 needs some editing, it's showing the red sea being measured at 31 miles long, not the Bab-El-Mandeb straight.
Yeah that 31 miles line is more like 900, and the 16 miles well the that’s not 16. It marks the Red Sea not the ban el-mandab (🥃)
@@garethmottramUS just 100 miles long 😂
For an average infantryman, you make some great videos!
Ha ha, enjoyed your attempt at the Camp name. Camp Lem-kd;sajfblahblah! 😄
Camp Lem-on-yaaay. Pretend you're French when you say it. I used to call it Camp Lemonade. Looks a whole lot better now than when I was in and out of there back in the early to mid-2000s.
Is it possible that Djibouti got its name inspiration from the musical "The Music Man"? Buddy Hacket sings these lyrics in "Shipoopi" (sounds like Djibouti) :
She's the girl you're glad you found
She's your shipoopi
Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi
The girl who's hard to get
Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi
But you can win her yet
Shipoopi is the hard to get "Girl" (Djibouti) that many major national militaries are tying "to get".
Major countries are trying to "win her yet".....
This is a great episode, illustrating how much I should know about geopolitics and yet are completely clueless about. Thank for helping me become a bit less clueless.
Just how meany countries have left seamen in Djibouti?

That’s nearly 7 miles (6.85 [from 11km in the video]) if converting from km to freedom units. Or, about 6 miles (6.214) if going off the title of the video of 10 kilometers.
Great report… What resources does this place have.

Of course! Everyone wants to get in Djibouti!!!
One thing not mentioned that ive heard before is that the only deep water port is next to the chinese base. so anything we ship by sea over there is very close to the chinese.
We landed there on Christmas '13. Special MAGTF-Africa
Not too sure abut that graphic at 3:59. The distance label ay be cutting Bab al Mandeb a little short, but the graphic is way off when it looks like referencing the Red Sea.
"We've seen Djibouti become the focal point for various military powers including the US, *France* and China"
hehe good one.. The French Air Force has been present in Djibouti since 1933. In 1948 creation of French air base 188.
French Army Camp Lemonnier was created in 1977. It bears the name of General Émile Lemonnier, beheaded by the Japanese for refusing to sign his surrender in Indochina during the 2d World War. The American base was created in 2002.
so what? cope harder, if you frenchies had any influence over Djbouti, you would have made them not allow china to go in, and fund them

The talk at the end of the video about the commercialization of Djibouti and all the countries trying to get in on it reminds me of cyberpunk corpo shit.

Haha. Very informative video... as always. But... I am next to positive you did this video just to be able to say, "Djibouti" as much as possible 😂😂

I wana see more of Djibouti
Chris, gotta adjust the Red Sea length. The Bab Al Mandev is 31 miles, but your marker shows the entire Red Sea as 31 miles (it’s ~1400mi)
at 4:00 that map showing 31 miles is incorrect. it highlighted the entire red sea as the straight, rather than just the Bab Al Mandeb

Djibouti is fun to say the least
Spent some time on that base in 2010 when I spent 6 months in the Red Sea/gulf of Aden. Vbss coxswain so I got to visit a bunch of fishing skiffs and learned all about that green plant they love to chew and hold in their cheeks like chew/dip/zyns. We didn’t get to pull into any cool places because of the geography location so the Bob hope galley was a big hit for not just me but the whole crew of my ship. We pulled in twice and cleaned them out the first time so the second time the rules changed lol. Too damn hot
Green plant is a mild stimulant called Khat
You bet Djibiouti! 😁
If I owed somebody a load of money, and they set up a camp with a heavy army and navy presence on my drive way... With ability to instantly block all of my outgoing trade... I'd feel a little intimidated!
don't worry you also rented your drive way to numerous people who are hostile to the money lander, and one of those people are way stronger than that money lender

Your graphic about the Bab al-Mandab Strait was a bit confusing. It made it seem like the Red Sea is only 16 miles wide and 31 miles long...
Damn Djibouti is bigger then I expected.
I wonder what kind of ordinance the bases have aimed at each other.
I guess that makes Djibouti's location the Mayfair of base building monopoly, Il take a pass go on that.

It was an informative and wonderful explanation of (Djibouti 🇩🇯) political ,economic position in the world due to its geographic position in western shores of (Bab mundab ) channel in southern starting of red sea .
About 20 years ago I had an African coworker , probably Somali, I work in and around the Twin Cities Minnesota since the 90s, who I asked if the name Djibouti also sounds funny to Africans, and he said yes. That's as much as I knew about Djibouti before this video.
