So, the movie is essentially the Wikipedia page on Shirley Chisholm.

Mrs. America, which was on hulu in 2020, starring Cate Blanchett & many other notable actresses, mentioned Shirley's campaign. It was very well done for anybody that's interested. Uzo Aduba played Shirley. Thank you guys.

When I was in high school, we had to give a speech as the person whose biography or autobiography we read. I still remember a fellow student, who was White and male, standing up and saying, "Hello, my name is Shirley Chisholm." Even our teacher, who was an older, dignified Black woman, burst out laughing. Jaime Byrd, you were the king of that day.

I would agree it should have been a mini series so we could get a full backstory and understand everything about her and the situation with her siblings and family tension and her as a person outside of her job in congress and her life And education path to get to were she was at in terms of her road to getting to running for president. It would have been cohesive if they explored everything about her to give us a full picture of her as a person with a personal life and her career. Instead of focusing on a specific timeline and leaving holes in the things that weren’t explained.

I really loved the scene when Shirley comes home and there is nothing to eat, and she is just sitting there with a TV dinner. I don't know it just showed me how much this woman was dedicated to her job. It sounds funny, but it just stuck in my mind. Also, when she meets Diahann Carrol.

I was 11 years old when Shirley ran. (ole lady here) I remember how inspirational she was for the adults around me. Typical old skool attitude regarding an ambitious woman: Uppitty.. Hey if someone protects my lunch I marry him. LOL I was so hoping it would be good... The fact that she even attempted the thing was so important. She meant so much to my generation or at least in my home. Not the Cliff notes production! LOL P.S. I have a good story about Mizz Carroll...Oh My Gawd! Auntie Jen as Maxine Waters!!!!!

I'm just so happy to see Regina King. I will be watching Shirley this weekend. I also recommend the documentary "Chisholm '72 - Unbought & Unbossed". It was on Netflix or another streaming service a few years ago.

Shirley was really passionate about education and social services, and launched some very important government programs to support them I hope the movie touches on this.

I watched the film and agree we needed to see more of the inner workings, especially what occurs at the 1972 National Black Political Convention in Gary, IN. which was complicated and nuanced. Coretta Scott King wrote about it her memoir, she mentioned the dynamics about endorsing Shirley Chisholm. I would have preferred that over the Huey Newton scene. Regina is good in the role, but I wish the script could have had a multidimensional Shirley.

This and *Femme* both seem to underline the lead characters would 'surprise' in their characterizations - like surprises about the 'dominant' one and the 'protector of the lunch' is the protagonist's true partner! Easy watch, if done with care I guess.

I loved this movie but only if it was a mini-series it would be on of the best Bio-Pics ever! So sad the potential lost 😢 but, I really love Regina King whole character she definitely deserves praise for her portrayal but, Netflix screwed it up.

Maybe because I know about Shirley Chisholm, I don't share your feelings about this film. While I don't think it's a great film, I think it's decent for what it is. If I knew nothing about Shirley, I would be motivated to research and found out more. The best biopics should inspire folk to learn more about the subject.

18:16 that gave me flashbacks to every school assignment/project I ever did. I feel seen.
Disappointed to hear a 2 out of 5; sounds like an important story to tell. I wonder if the cost of making a mini series is higher than making a film.

Good points however the ostensible green screen dream sequence that wasn't a dream sequence in the beginning perfectly illustrated the loneliness and isolation of stepping into a position where nobody who looks like you us there or has been there. Terrence Howard having such a coffee break small role was humorous. The movie did a good job showing how SC was a bit nebulous which ultimately set her ceiling for how far she would get. The score was a little generic but also points to SC''s down the middle views on things. Interesting accent. I will now be researching where SC hailed to have such an accent.

I knew this would not end well. The casting is off. I would have loved an actual politician like Nina Turner to represent Shirley or an unknown. Aunt Maxine is still with us so hopefully she will manage the quality of her narrative so there’s a different result. Jennifer Lewis as Maxine Waters would be fantastic .

Where is the Charlene Mitchell movie? I'd watch it. I'm happy that Regina King did this movie and did her all as usual but no thank you is this film is not going to be in depth that I can just read my feelings about Shirley Chisholm and we done in 5 minutes versus a few hours.
