- Gay homosexuals Nick and Joseph spoil Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles - a 1975 film written and directed by Chantal Akerman, which was recently voted the Greatest Film of All Time by Sight and Sound/BFI.
Premise: A lonely widowed housewife does her daily chores, takes care of her apartment where she lives with her teenage son, and turns the occasional trick to make ends meet. However, something happens that changes her safe routine.

I was completely unaware this film existed until this review.
I thought “In the Mood for Love” also was regarded as one of the greatest too? One of my faves! A gorgeous film.
Definitely one of the greatest films ever
I saw this about 7 years ago on TCM. On Sunday nights they would show a special foreign film with a host giving background. To this day when I bend down to wash the tub, I think of the movie . I also saw Come and See and may other movies. Then my sons convinced me I need to cut the cable, cuz it’s blah blah blah, so I did and now it’s been a few years and I still miss TMC. Love the review.
TCM is the best television channel ever, forever. Period.
I would like to hear a review of Come & See... but it may beyond your scope.. it is a brutal film. Yet it is the closest I have seen a true depiction of the total depravity revealed in combat.
I haven’t seen this movie (yet) but agree with prior posted comment. This plot /scenes made me immediately think of the music video diptych by the Eurythmics “Beethoven” /“I Need a Man.” Maybe Annie and Dave drew inspiration from this movie.
I lasted about 40 minutes with this one, and j’adore des film Francais. I too saw it made best film of all time. I appreciate your review as I do not intend to ever sit through the rest 😀
A movie like this is a character study in acting really, the performance of the protagonist is sublime, the ideas about emotion, living, survival etc., the eating segments are amazing, her heels on the wood floors, the nuances of how detached the characters is from life and yet the very essence of her routines with meals, going for a coffee and sitting at the exact same table and served by the same staff person, he inability to wait,
People today will sit for hours watching reality tv shows which are banality personified
Where as this movie, while fiction, has much more realism to it,

Children of Men and Shawshank Redemption are both in my top ten
I was lucky enough to catch a screening of this at my local rep theater last year after it topped the Sight and Sound poll. Definitely one I was putting off to watch in a theater where I’m forced not to be distracted! I was surprised at how absorbed I was for the entire 200 minutes.
I got so emotional when I learned this movie had topped the Sight and Sound list, a true masterpiece, thank you Chantal Akerman

Oh, these Kids don't know.....Eurythmics' Video for "Beethoven (I Love To Listen)" borrows BIG TIME from 'Jeanne Dieman'; Annie Lennox plays a repressed Housewife whose inner psyches mesh, and explode into a "psycho-Vamp" who 'breaks free' of her shackled existence, and become the centerpiece of their 1987 Album, "Savage"..these Boys will LOSE IT when they see it!
I love this movie, I watched it 4 times in a row one time. It's very soothing and fascinating, I always find a new detail.

When ever I see the title Greatest Film Ever Made….I’m curious 🤔…one night woke up and turned on TCM and what was playing was The Passion of Joan of Arc, the silent version of the saint. Digging a bit deeper into this masterpiece, a movie could be done about the Dutch director, Carl Theodor Dreyer, who received a lot contempt, criticism…the film was actually cut from it’s original version by, Archbishop of Paris and government censors. Even with the cuts it was a critical success and was honored with the title being one of the greatest films ever made….after that late night viewing I thought, they are not wrong.
The actress, Falconetti, this was one of 2 films she made. Her mental illness may have prevented her from any real level of success…..

Tony Takitani 2004 is my fav film of all time.
I have so much thought and feeling about this movie. It resonates to the bone.
First, she had a husband and she did all these mundane chores for. Also she had sex with him. The only person left is a teenage boy. Her son. I'm not sure of his exact age. But even if he is older, say 17, 6 years ago would make him 11. He would be on the brink of beginning his male walk into sexuality. With such a devastating lose.
So I can see the split of herself, 6 years after his death, confident in the split, so automatic, void of emotion. Machine like.
Caring goes to feeding, clothing, setting up things for her son.
Sex goes to the tricks.
She has continued her "wifely duties" in two opposite directions. With all energy focused on items instead of real intimacy and engagement of relationships. I'm watching this again. The details are micro, a cadence in the clicks of the light switches and clacks of her heels. Her snatching up the towel after sex. Opening the window to get the sex smell out of her room. It seems like the fatal sex scene is done with the purpose to make one think that the faceless man on top of her is to be her husband or death itself, signifying her true feelings after finally feeling something, anything after her husband's death. Rage and anger are feelings that are "not allowed" in society by women. She controls what she can. Her reorganizing everything after she allows man to "handle" her. A lot of women, unknowingly, through divorce, nowadays, have the same experiences this woman has had. To focus on the male son. Daughters don't usually allow mothers to do this to them. Mothers will be met with rebellion. She does so much for her son. Keeping him inadvertently younger for her to have purpose. And she cannot even answer his questions or have any conversation. With the baby. She first ignores, fleeting glaces to make sure it's alive. Next, baby is upset with more contact with her. I believe she does it three times because "three times is charm". 3 times she picks up the baby, the most innocent and mirrored self. The baby shows her what she is inside. And she finally sees it to be true, leaving the baby to console itself to a better state than she is able to provide.
This is a thick movie.
This movie is true art that can be interrupted in many fascinating layers. I love the depth you both give your reviews, I'm so happy to have stumbled upon your channel!! Your channel is intelligent and interesting, it gives space for art and interpretation. Thank you.

If it’s what I think it is, one could argue that. I love love love that movie. Long and confusing? Yes. Plot? Not much.
I didn't know this film existed; after watching your review, I went online to see where I could watch it. Fortunately, it's streaming on Max. It was a perfect time for me to watch it, as I'm on vacation this week, so I did it in the afternoon. I understand the reason why the film is more than three hours long. The viewer needs to see the unraveling of Jeanne's routine, and it's fascinating to watch. The lack of a soundtrack and limited dialogue allows us to focus on the subtleties. I even noticed the scenes when only one chair was at the kitchen table. Thank you for reviewing this film and bringing attention to it.

Delphine Seyrig is fabulous in Daughters of Darkness as the iconic Erzébet Bathory. Best incarnation so far!
I think the bravery of making movie about such mundane stuff and the influence it has had on so many film makers and it's new found fame - it's become more popular in the last 10 years than it was before - is what propelled it to the no.1 spot - also the fact that the director killed herself party due to the fact that very few were interested in other types of movies from her and wanted another Jeanne Dielman.

Then, realized it was a movie title - then couldn't figure out if it was French or German, yep, so it's Belgian 🤨*But* no matter, the character here 'disturbing!' Assuming 'working on auto-pilot', until she felt 'alive' or present! Long movie - good that it was worth it!

Film ratings are very subjective. There are films that are written very well and there are films that really elicit an emotional reaction from me. And then there are films that defy categorization where you are well written, emotionally satisfying, yet frustrating on some level.
All this woman needed was an onlyfans account and a meal delivery service!

Have you seen a movie called "Womb" or "Clone"? It has two names... I think it was a good film, but uncomfortable. It got very bad reviews. I wonder what you guyes think of that film. This film you are talking about here sounds uncomfortable too...

This is a great film in many many ways, but it's not the best movie ever made. You gotta be a cinephile to like this one

Comparing Jeanne Dielman to Vertigo or Citizen Kane is a joke. It's interesting to watch a movie that's so slow and filmed from so few angles but other than some of that it's a waste of time.
Why though?
I agree that this is not "the best movie of all time," but nothing dictates what filmmaking style is or isn't "a waste of time." Sometimes it's just the slow and non-stylized type of film that's more effective
Both Vertigo and Citizen Kane were flops when they came out and Vertigo wasn't particularly acclaimed either initially.
Wow a movie basically explained within about 3 minutes, but it’s over 3 hours..it’s a pass from me on this one guys.
