  • A look at Mora's first full-tang knife, the new Garberg. Is it worth the money ($65 to $85 USD)? Is it effective? Let's test it.

    I love the food testing. Wish more knife videos would showcase real world cutting tasks like that.

      I agree, and I think most knife videos on CZcams are from the manufacturers or their "agents" that give them free knives. So they are not really trying to test the knives but only to sell them.
      Stay frosty.

    I always appreciate your videos and have learned a lot. Thanks for being practical and logical. YOUR videos set a high standard others should aspire to. You show the good and the not so good and explain your reasoning for each. Especially enjoyed your kukri series but appreciate this video equally. Keep it up.

      Thank you very much. I try to be fair and honest. Mora knives are so good it is hard to find knives that can compete with these inexpensive scandis.
      Have a great day.

    The green river knives that were highly popular during the Mt. Man era were thin blades. They cut better. They had other tools for firewood and building.
    I do understand that many moderns have no use for a sheath knife other than processing firewood so I'm going to respect that. They aren't all that great as knives.

    really nice video. I like your comments pointing out the disadvantage of blade thickness.

      Thank you very much. I like doing these even though it takes a little time & effort. Plus Moras are amazing knives for there cost to performance ratio.
      Stay happy & safe Irène.

    I can see why it's your favorite picture of a Mora knife, the Swedish soldier @1:56 looks just like beautiful Emma Stone! What's interesting is she's mentioned she's part Swedish in interviews. Shout out for playing Tina Turner from "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome". Cheers!🍻

    As a man with a whole stable of various Moras, I was intrigued about this knife when I first heard about. Thank you for the review and I may see if the price will come down a bit before purchase.

    Nice to see a new video, Sweets. The new Mora looks good enough, but it probably isn't for me. I'd have to do too much to it to get the edge where I wanted it, and I'm not sure the edge would perform at a level high enough to justify the cost once I did it. Looks like a comfortable handle, though, and that is the most important quality in a bushcraft knife, in my experience.
    BTW, because of you I now have a Tora FW MKI, and three more Tora's in the pipe (BSI, Kirante Sirupate, and a MKII) that should be here next week. My FW most definitely lives up to the hype. Thanks for the intro to Simon and company.

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica  Před 8 lety

      Oh, I forgot to talk about the handle in the video. That Garberg handle is like the Mora 2000 & Mora 510 in shape but it is not hard plastic. The Mora Garberg use a semi-hard semi soft plastic. Kind of like a hard rubbish feel. Difficult to describe but it is nice and secure to the grip.
      Glad you have a Tora and now know what traditional kukris are like:
      - much better than tourist types"
      - much nicer than massed produced types
      Stay happy.

    Thanks for the thorough review. I think the combination of the thickness, grind, and edge bevel work against this one in the kitchen, which makes other, much cheaper blades better all around camp knives, in my view.

    I've been carving with mine (Garberg) and can say that when working with dry pine (cuts like the pine is hardly there), I prefer it over my BB (Bushcraft Black) and my SBT ( Skookum Bush Tool). I like my SBT over my BB on green pine, but have yet to use my Garberg on green pine. I can say that it is worth the $$$ you pay. I didn't think I would like the handle, but as soon as I handled it, I fell in love with it, even though I would prefer micarta, I am very happy anyway. Maybe Morakniv will offer micarta in the future.
    Thanks for the vid!

    Couldn't agree more, the previous Moras were strong enough, but to each his own I guess.

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica  Před 8 lety +3

      Yes, this Mora, the Garberg seems to be made to compete with all the $100 to $200 USD full-tangs on the market. And as you probably know the No.1 complaint some on-line people have about any Mora is: *"It's not a full-tang".*
      So here is Mora's new "hero".
      Thanks for a good comment.

    I like this knife and will probably buy one eventually but I cant see it doing anything any of my other Moras cant do already. And at a fraction of the cost of the Garberg.Good video!

      @sweetcostarica  Před 8 lety +3

      I see want you mean. Also a small belt axe like a $120 - $150 Granfors Bruk or the small Fiskars X7 can do the light splitting of chopping and a thin Mora everything else.
      Good point.

    69 dollars is a steal, for that price i'd be ordering one first thing in the morning. Try 100 euro over here in Europe. Besides that I think it's completely worth the price. They say the Brisa Enzo is a modern version of the traditional puuko knife. Although a great knive, I call that lazy design at best. Now look at the effort Mora puts in their products in contrast. They are constantly evolving and refining their products. For the price of 69 dollars it's probably the best allround knife on the market today, or for a 100 euro for that matter.

    The companion could be a folding knife. Some suggestions: Karesuando "Nallo" or EKA Swede 88 or Spyderco Delica. All good slicers.

    Till this day, I haven't seen a one tool option knife. Then again, I'm not stupid enough to go out in the bush with only one knife!

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica  Před 7 lety +1

      Exactly! The people that need survival knives (basically a one tool option) and they are not in the military *are a danger* to themselves and other folk with them.
      If you often or even sometimes get into survival situations outdoors please stay indoors.
      Regular knives, even folding knives can & have worked in all kinds of outdoor situations. The thing is to just get a good economical tool that fits your needs aka Mora.
      EDIT: Happy New Year!!

    thanks for the review. Great video as usual buddy. I will be picking one of these up. Question, do you do guided hunts in Alaska?

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica  Před 7 lety

      No, my closest friend up here is a great bear, deer, moose, elk, you name it, hunter. But he does not do guided tours. He won't let me take video or pictures of his "secret" spots. The people that offer guided hunts are special types of individuals and a guided tour IS very expensive.
      That being said, everyone that I have seen that go on them have fun, almost always are successful, and have a trip of a lifetime.
      EDIT: Happy New Years!!

    Hi, I wanted to know from your experience whether this 14C28N steel is really great as it is said for knives to use in nature? Is better than 440C or VG10? Let me know what you think, a greetings Michele

    • @sweetcostarica
      @sweetcostarica  Před 7 lety

      Hi Michele, sorry it took me this long to answer your question. *14C28N is the newest of Sandvik's knife steels.*
      This steel is often used in high end knives as it holds a great edge and and has good corrosion resistance.
      14C28N steel is suppose to be easy sharpen (I have only honed it) and is billed to hold it's edge, as said.
      This steel seems strong (it is a hard stainless steel after all) yet flexible too in that it will probably preform well in many applications.
      I think it is a hit.

      They are not bad. For a full-tang design I love the way they enclosed the full-tang like Fallkniven does. This makes the knife better/safer for extreme wether conditions like in the dead of Winter or in a desert.
