I have visited Napoli and Pompeii! I had spent one full day in the ancient Pompeii with a guid who was a doctor of ancient Roman History!!
Thanks for the video! Just ordered two Pompeii hand forged swords today!! I do own multiple firearms too, but this sword is an Ar-15 of the old time! The glorious era of Roman Empire!!!
In close a large knife and the short sword can do much more damage than all types of handguns. But I like the Gladius for it's great balance & handling. Albion's have these two characteristics & look very good also.
Thanks for the review. It's amazing how few people compare the gladiī side-by-side and you even touched on the Albion Trajan which I'm interested in. I think you're the only person on CZcams so far to show the handling of it. Thanks you for the simple yet nice overview.
Its nice to find people that genuinely appreciate western history, nice video and those gladiuses are very cool!
hahaha "steel..I mean dont steel" great vid
The word Hollywood is a play on the word Holly Wood from the Holly tree emplying magical wood.
as much as I have studied the Rom Legions and as much of a weapons guys as I am (I'm an armorer and firearms instructor) I didn't know that there was such a difference in gladius' types.
I just bought the Tiberius (Fulham Gladius II). I hope the 9-12 month wait is worth it.
It is worth the wait. That short sword is lively.
EDIT: Happy Labor Day!
Did you end up getting your sword within the 9-12 period?? I’m also thinking of getting the same one Tiberius over Allectus, how do you like it??
@@ltserge3226 It took the full nine months to get it. It’s a beautiful sword. Light and well balanced. The blade shape is my favorite. A little bit of curve and flare. It’s one of my favorite swords I own.
You, sir, have an excellent and expensive taste in swords. Great review.
That Pompeii Gladius reinforced tip looks interesting. I wonder if the museum piece was owned by an officer. A Centurion perhaps? Looks a little too special to just give a typical Legionairre.
Not sure who would have bought a reinforced tipped Gladius but they did need to have more
money for this special feature. Here is what Albion says about this "Trajan" Pompeii Gladius;
_"Our Trajan has a blade with the subtle waist and reinforced point found on_
_the best examples of the type. It is based on the famous Guttmann gladius that is_
_now exhibited in the Royal Armouries in Leeds._
great work
Good vid. I have 3 reproduction Roman swords. They are sort of fun. The first few you showed match the pattern but the sad truth is that most of the real examples found weren't nearly as good as the better reproductions. The steel/iron in many of them meant they weren't nearly as good as many people think they should be and the people that owned the blades turned edges and did other less that great things to them. Oh well. The soldiers owned the blades.
The strengthened point appears to have due to sorry materials used in many blades and the possibility the owner might need to use the blade on another Roman soldier wearing segmented armour. That appears to have happened much more often than anyone sane would wish.
At the opening of the video, the text says "ROME", when in fact, it is St. Peter's square in Vatican City, a separate country from Rome, Italy. Just saying.
Wow, what beauties. Would love to see a recreation of these blades manufacture. With only historical methods. The bronze work and wood guard for example, would be quite tricky
Maybe your next Roman swords should be named Herculaneum after the small town where the rich and powerful lived? It to was destroyed by the volcano but its furniture people and wall art is well preserved . It once stood on the sea shore with boat yards and boats preserved and even to day they're tunnelling under modern buildings to find more objects like beds chairs all due to this area being affected less by pumistone and more by hot piroclastic flow.
You are loaded with cash to buy those expensive swords with those expensive scabbards.
Actually I am --filthy rich-- not that rich.
I have ---a maid & butler-- friends that work for me.
I drive a --2018 Martin Vantage-- 2018 Honda.
Thanks for asking.
Regarding the Gladius, what would you say represents the best overall value? What do you think of Legacy Arms and their Roman Maintz Gladius Sword, or Gladius swords by Windlass Steelcrafts? I've been hearing good things about the latter. But, I'm concerned that some swords, especially with brass content, may contain lead.
The wisest answer to you JS is buy the best sword of any type you can afford. If you can get the best, get an Albion as it is well known as the best maker on the market.
GOD BLESS
Wow. Very detailed review of really nice swords in one video.
Thanks very much Janggo1911.
I wouldn't mind if they made one that was proportionately a Pompeii, but from the best modern steel and polymer like a Glock in place of wood. Maybe a nice powder coating.
Check out the Cold Steel Gladius Machete. It's exactly what you want. Though its a Mainz Type gladius instead of a Pompeii. Now say what you want about Cold Steel's swords, but the Gladius they have is great and modern enough.
@@ArmouredProductions i might have to check it out. I've never used one of their swords (everyone seems to bad-mouth them). But I've never had an issue with the many other products I've owned by them; knives, push daggers, blow guns, shovels, a kukri machete, a cane dagger (for my grandfather who collected canes), etc.
@@ArmouredProductions looking at their video, I just wish the handle was maybe .5 to 1" shorter and the blade were either the same length or longer.
@@ArmouredProductions that makes perfect sense. I remember Gerber recalling this rediculous cleaver thing because it would only break or bounce, hurting the user I the name of looking like a "zombie killer."
Still, I'm reasonably sure I can modify the Cold Steel. Thanks for putting me on the right track.
@@ArmouredProductions zombies from Gaul.
Hmm
The cold steel gladius machete is affordable.. and a fucking beast for the price. Check one out..
Not even in the same category.
Well informed closing music. Good choice. Greetings from Doncaster England. A Roman town meaning castle/fort on the River Don.
Hello sweetcostarica, love your vids. I just wanted to ask a question on today blades...I was looking to buy a British service issue kukri the 1970s circa one to be exact, but the only issue is that it's sold out....I was just wondering if you know how often Simon Hengle restocks or how long it can take to restock...?
Cool review. I'd love to add a Spatha to my collection. The history behind these is truly fascinating.
Thanks & I agree, the Spatha is interesting. A great early sword.
I have 2 Albion Spathas,go for it.They are great!
Review the Decurio, please! It's maybe on my list.
Gladius sword are one of the best combat design and stood the test of time,,,I hope to own a few in the near future,,,👍✌
Albion's are the best period but I bought that Kris Cutlery Spatha above and it was very close to the Albion in weight, balance, and handling. So some others swords can complete. The thing is Albion's are made better, have the best materials, and are researched to be just like the original swords they copy.
I hope you get your gladius.
I hope so as well,,,and you continue to search and find the best and finest ,,,and those others that are of good standard,,,it makes blade buyers like myself aware of the quality names of blade manufacturers of spealized egded items,,,plus I enjoy your research efforts, videos and points of view,,,✌
Why do you say PompeLi?
He's from Costa Rica
Good stuff. Thank you for sharing.
Damn! Somebody is on a sword kick lately. Fantastic. I think I speak for everyone when I say that we'd all like to see some vids of sword demos if you'd feel comfortable using them for such things. Nothing too drastic. Maybe some tatami mat cutting and chopping of watermelons the like.
Great vid, Sweets!
Mark Morrow also makes a really good a roman gladius.
Very cool gladius!, Albion makes great stuff, awesome video!😃
Thanks 😊 they just take a while to get after buying.
@@sweetcostarica I bought a katana from “swords of Northshire” and it took close to 2yrs to get, but very worth it😃
@@sweetcostaricahow long is a while?
@@ltserge3226 At the very least *_one year_* wait.
At rare times someone buys a sword and can not pay. Then it goes up for sell but don't count on this too much.
@@sweetcostarica wow that’s insane ok good to know thank you!!
I have a Mainz and it is one of my best swords, unfortunately the handle is too short by about a third of an inch making it incredibly uncomfortable and impossible to use. I am tempted to modify the pommel to get my hand to fit, but on a $700.00 blade, the temptation is just not high enough yet, lol. I might have to wait for the Zombie Apocalypse to start first to get the proper motivation.
Albion's can be used, as they are near copies of antique swords in every way.
BUT *they are really not to be used.* What these Albion's are, are the highest quality real swords for collectors.
If you *had* to fight or are in an extreme survival situation: yes take the $745 USD Albion.
If you are practicing or beating up something take a wooden sword or a "beater" sword.
Great video, thank you. I want to get one of these Gladii but that they don't come with scabbards is unfortunate and there's no way I'll buy a 930 Dollar scabbard; one can get another Katana for that price.
The Roman sword Wight 800g
How do you not know how to pronounce "pompeii"
How is the kriss spatha in terms of durability does it kinda hold a light next to albion?
Who is the more older, In the history???
Good Vid. These swords would work great on Feral hog hunts. Its such a nice shape but i still dont understand why they had no hilt
Because of very large shields
These are beautiful swords. I probably won't get one because I like everything I get to be at least a little bit utilitarian. I've thought of getting a Cobra Steel Kindjal which is similar in design but would be more appropriate for utilitarian tasks.
I agree. Although these Albion are the best swords to use in war or personal defense, because of their prices due to being the highest quality & being "real" they are not for practice or any utilitarian task.
*Note:* I hope you mean tameshigiri, katas, etc. & not cutting practice on people which is what a sword is design to do.
Stay frosty.
I don't know what tameshigiri is. I would want a sword that I could use easily for self-defense but wouldn't be upset if it was scuffed a little bit when I'm hiking or walking. If an unbalanced coyote ever bothered me, I'd want something that could take him out at a little more distance than what a hunting knife would do. I could also see myself trying to make up some kind of cutting medium and practice edge alignment. I'd also want something that I could use for cutting wood in a pinch.
You use a sword for hiking and/or walking? You are actually thinking of using a sword to cut wood?
I highly *do not recommend* this VTPSTTU for any sword. The problem is their are better tools out there made for those activities. The Romans would go to foreign lands with all kinds of tools to build their defenses but never used their sword except for battle. For coyote & two legged treats a pistol or shotgun works and are much safer/easier to use that a sword.
EDIT: Stay happy & safe brother.
I would enjoy walking with a small sword just for fun. If I'm walking with any blade, I'd like the option of chopping wood in an emergency, but clearly, the kukri would be a better choice for that dual purpose. I should get a holster so that I can carry a nice revolver for hostile coyotes and people. We also have mountain lions around here sometimes. I really don't think one would mess with me. Theodore Roosevelt once killed a mountain lion with a knife. Repeating his feat would make me feel macho if I survived.
I am glad you have a fun loving heart. Your last comment indicates you are living in or near India. Either that or Wyoming, USA. Anyway, my better choice is a slug filled shotgun for large threats & a Glock 9mm for small threats.
The trouble with using swords for anything other than their designed purpose.i.e. fighting is that long blades do not like the repeated stress that chopping wood brings. Their cross sections are not great for this. Most swords will snap.
You are right a kukri (parang, bolo, golok, even a big bowie) would be a better choice for that dual purpose. The Tora Blades owner/operator and a man he knew both fought off bear attacks in Nepal with their kukris. But even though it seems like a test of manhood most folks don't survive that kind of encounter. I personally know of a man from college who *uses a bag to go to the bathroom now for life* after getting a buffalo bulls horn in the rear end after challenging it.
So for an all round long kukri for what you want to do I suggest the Tora KTM Sherpa Sirupate:
From the website:
"Tora's Sherpa Sirupate is a "Villager" styled kukri which comes with a 39cm long blade, belly depth of 4.5cm and handle length of 13cm. It has a stick tang..."
"The rough weight guidance for the Sherpa Sirupate is *575-650g."*
Does it come with a scabbard?
if u r into pompeii history check out Herculaneum, maybe u have but if not it's got great documentaries about it. everything was preserved far better in the that city then pompeii.
Thanks, I'll check it out.
Pura vida? Where u from?
impresionante!!
Does anyone know what kind of steel Albion uses?!!
*The Independent Canadian,* Kult of Athena says Albion swords are 6150 High Carbon Steel.
Albion says:
"Why we only say that we use "high carbon steel" for our historical swords
*Our choice of steel is proprietary* and is influenced by several factors:
- the steel must have a carbon content approximately equal to that of surviving original period swords
- the steel must perform well both in milling, grinding and finishing
- the steel must respond properly to heat-treating, giving us the temper/hardness, flexibility and edge retention that meets our high standards."
Hope that helps.
nice video dude, the allectus mainz gladius is fully functional?
Albion's can be used, as they are near copies of antique swords in every way.
BUT *they are really not to be used.* What these Albion's are, are the highest quality *real swords* for collectors or reenactors.
If you *had* to fight or are in an extreme survival situation, the $745 USD Albion will be *the best for the job.*
If you are practicing or beating up something take a wooden sword or a "$100 - $200 USD beater" sword.
so do you recommend this albion gladius mainz for 745 USD, for hard fight situation?
i dont think i will never be in one, but i like to think it can be used for that,
please let me know as i want to buy this gladius
thanks for all your help
Andres Felipe Rueda De la Hoz
All Albion swords are fully functional and could be used for self-defense. They are well designed and very strong. I also like the idea of a sword that is beautiful and functional.
Thank you for you reply SirPilkington, then i will buy the augustus albion, do you know where i an get scabbard that is good but no so expensive?
Andres Felipe Rueda De la Hoz
You're welcome. Try ordering the sword from Kult of Athena, it's a bit cheaper than buying directly from Albion.
Unfortunately, scabbards are often expensive, because they are custom and handmade. However, the price depends a lot on how special you want your scabbard to be. The more decoration you want, the more expensive it gets. You could also make your own scabbard of course.

Excuse me mister, but if you dont use these perfect swords for what they were made for you arent appreciating them enough in my opinion. They should cut and stab something and you should train and train until you are the ultimate swordsman. Then you can fight against other people with sharp swords SAFELY because you will be so fucking good.Trust me i know.Have been doing this for 10 years already.
watch his yt comment skills
That sounds like a stupid idea. Firstly Roman's training involved heavy wooden swords. If the real fighters trained with duds why would he train with a real one? Secondly if you want to kill someone then you belong in prison
Would you ever be willing to sell that Allectus Gladius ;)
Had a big moving sale. All gladius' already sold, sorry.
@@sweetcostarica I take it you would'nt be willing to part with your decurio then? :D..........sorry for being a vulture as well
@@timporsch2669 It's gone too. Sorry, nice sword. It was hard to sell.
@@sweetcostarica ok, thank you for answering. Lucky fellow :)
Nah. No scabbard no Albion. I'll go for the Kingdom Of Arms gladii.
wtf i can't wiev your vid! u taking ut down?
No, everything is fine. Try a different computer.
Sorry for your trouble.
Forget the leather sheath, I rather get a kydax sheath that won't rust up my 6150 blade.
Manuel Silva I think the point is having something that is historically accurate and high quality.
It's a pompelli its Pompeii
Sorry, about that. I feel ashamed owning these great swords and not knowing some of their proper names.
Thanks for your caring instruction & Christmas love *_Erik Murray._* It is people like you that God will reward in Heaven for their deeds.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!
Then you do not yet see the truth :) Dont worry you will
lol i love this but your sword sucks
“Pompeli”???? Man, if you want to talk about Gladius at least show some respect and learn something about it! It’s “POMPEY”, not pompeli ..... Pathetic!
I agree with you sir. Just like my violin, I still can not say _Stradivarius_ since I got it.
I will apologize to my expensive Albion Pompeli Gladius soon. I have no right to own it.
Thank you *Коки Лудия.* I am ashamed at being so decadent not to take the time to learn the names of the items in my collection.
Forgive me ; )
