An edited down version of the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest in Lausanne with a scoreboard using today’s technology. Nothing but a fun lockdown project.
Firstly, the delay finishing the 1980s was not intentional. I was about 20 minutes away from uploading 1989 and my SSD bricked my PC. I lost everything since 1984...which was quite devastating. Just a reminder to backup your stuff! My 1985, 86 and 87 videos now only exist on CZcams! It’s taken me about six days to get 1989 rebuilt and reedited, and as you can imagine, I never want to see this edition again!!
Anyway, this edit will give a flavour of the evening (6th May) with Terry Wogan’s commentary. Despite SSR’s excellent production and studio, this one felt like a 0-0 draw - almost as if Yugoslavia got points from the juries because they got to the end of the selection and wondered where to put the points. Even the UK entrant, lauded as a favourite to win, was lacklustre. Although, since I’ve heard these entries about six times, there are some highlights worth addressing - the Netherlands were really robbed here, and so were Austria I think - their strongest entry of the decade.
1989 was a huge year in European history, and just a few days before the contest, the border between Hungary and Austria was dismantled - the first chink in the ‘Iron Curtain’ that has split the continent into East and West. Largely free, democratic elections were scheduled to take place in Poland in the next month, protests in East Germany were mounting, and action was taking place in Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria. Yugoslavia would go on it’s own journey too, but for now it ended a run of 22 songs which don’t add up to much to the casual viewer, but there were a few hints to the geopolitical scene in some of the lyrics - Austria being the most obvious.
This is the last contest to date (2020) to be held in a Francophone country, had Switzerland won in 2020, I wonder what a modern day Francophone contest would look like - surely much less spoken French than in 1989.
DESIGN AND THE BOARD
So this year’s board was very similar to 1988, although it attempted to show a ‘shiny’ effect with a greater, brighter gradient. Together with the brush script typeface, this is one of the more unreadable boards, although I know it’s a victim of VHS recording and then digital crunching down!
In 1988 I mentioned the strong corporate branding, and SSR surpassed Dublin I think. I was quite pleased to have achieved rebuilding the Matterhorn (even though I had to do it twice) and I think I managed to incorporate the now TWO elements of the board (that will be with us into the 90s), the main board and the Top 5. My original board (prior to my computer issues) had numbers flying to their countries, but I opted for something simpler in version two, and this gave me the opportunity to fold in some German and Italian along with the French. Incidentally SSR’s board is the last to appear in any other language other than English - boards had been appearing in the working languages of the EBU only (English and French) since 1977.
Whereas last year had a mixture of serif and sans serif, this year only Palatino is used (see 1988 for a history), although I opted for Monotype’s version, Book Antiqua, a font that appears on all Windows PCs, in bold and italic, as was their logo branding.
TRANSFER NEWS (source: Wiki)
BACK: Cyprus: They returned with an entry that was legal and proper, so all 22 countries of the 1980s appear for the final shindig of the decade.
INTERVAL ACT
Guy Tell attempts a magic trick. Unsurprisingly, magicians haven’t been back to Eurovision that much since. Do check out Wogan’s full commentary, it’s classic Wogan.

Remake!!!!!!!!
Is there any way to watch your 1988 video? It seems like it's deleted for copyright (at least it's not available on CZcams in my country).
Very good desing here, where flags are slightly waving, lovin it 👏
During my spare time (read: procrastination), I tried to conduct this voting in reverse order. It is first a Sweden vs Austria contest, then it transitions into a Sweden vs United Kingdom contest. Italy also seem to do extremely well in the first half. After a particular round of voting, three points separate the top 5 (Austria, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Sweden). Denmark and Yugoslavia come out of nowhere (at somewhere around the halfway mark).
I never knew that John Cleese had presented the Eurovision Song Contest.
Had the scores been presented from end to beginning of the running order (yugoslavia to italy) it would’ve made a much more spectacular voting sequence, with Sweden and the UK battling it out for most of it, until Yugoslavia and Denmark comes up out of nowhere at the end and Yugoslavia snatches victory at the last second
The way we would get another 1988-voting moment if Iceland was voting last, your work is incredible!
This is so much closer than people realise. I once saw this scoreboard in reverse somewhere, such a more suspenseful voting! Fab job again :)
Yes I agree, although Wogan's commentary largely misses it out...mainly because of the lack of a reordering scoreboard! I almost wondered whether it would be worth showing a 'what you'd need to win' element, like in Darts lol :-) Before Yugoslavia got that 1 point, the UK could have taken it, but only if Yugoslavia got nothing from Germany at all (which was close, they only got 1 point), and Yugoslavia gave the UK 12....perhaps less likely, but it could say 'requires 24 from two juries'. No where to fit in in anyway! Overall, I didn't think the UK deserved to be second, but the singing in English thing gave us an unfair advantage I think.
@@thereorderboard Your last sentence tells a lot about your feelings about the entry XD
@@thereorderboard is there a case when the purple light appears in any country that gets points that the country does not appear in other languages? Is there a case to change it?
When the points are indicated, the receiving country's name is indicated in German and Italian, which along with French (the board's "mother tongue", so to speak), are the three main official languages of Switzerland.
Spain's song and performance were amazing...and 6th position
A total winner
A great entry for Finland! :)
Classics from Spain, Austria, Greece, Switzerland and Belgium.
A well deserved win for Yugoslavia, still an iconic song from the Croatian band Riva 🌴🇭🇷🫒
Not. Uk was robbed.
How t f... can a pore cuntry like yugoslavia robbe you ???!! 😂😂😂

This was apparently the closest CRO got to Eurovision, even hosting in Zagreb in 1990 because of this.
@ariccua6101 it was still Yugoslavia!
17:32 Based on the current rules, the youngest entrant to take the stage is Victor Vernicos (GRE 2023).
Great work as usual, you are a treasure even if I don't know you.
Finland and Spain are my winners that year, so good.
Yugoslavia ❤️
Amazing job, I really like the detail that you made the flags wave
It's bizarre how some songs seem like yesterday while others feel like they're from Jurassic Park. Here's an alternate top 10
12 - Spain
10 - UK
8 - Iceland (so under-rated!: and winner of best trousers
7 - Greece
6 - Yugoslavia
5 - Cyprus
4 - Turkey
and after that it's anybody…
3 - Belgium
2 - Austria (winner of best hair)
1 - Sweden
How nice, thank you!!
Glad you like it!
This is incredible, well done!
AGAIN Italy had the best song but did not win (I am not Italian) ... and this one is an absolute classic ... one of the best songs EVER ... and in my top ten of all time Avrei voluto is really a gem ...
Fantastisk sang ❤
Not a great year by many means, but my top 5 are great. My personal points for 1989 (EDITED)
1p 🇨🇾 Cyprus
2p 🇹🇷 Turkey
3p 🇭🇷 Yugoslavia
4p 🇵🇹 Portugal
5p 🇬🇧 United Kingdom
6p 🇫🇷 France
7p 🇪🇸 Spain
8p 🇩🇰 Denmark
10p 🇸🇪 Sweden
12p 🇫🇮 Finland
very strange top 5!? ... Austria was best with one of the best songs in ESC history
Make scoreboards like that to old contests too (1957-1979)
@@dawidjan1993 It doesn't have to be in the same order... The graphics can just follow the order of the existing votings...

Lolita Morena dealt with the odd-numbered juries, while Jacques Deschenaux dealt with the even-numbered juries.
I noticed right up until Luxembourg’s last participation in 1993 that their jury had a tendency to vote quite highly for Portugal
Yes. 1990 is a shining example. That year, Portugal received 7 out of its 9 points from Luxembourg (the other two came from the United Kingdom)
It’s because of the high Portuguese population in that country
there's a lot of Portuguese descent in Luxembourg so yeah, block voting
@@wdym100 And how should the Portuguese population vote if it is just a jury voting???
Sweden and Spain were the best of the evening.
However, wonderful entries from Greece and Cyprus which brought small delicate songs that aged very well.
Portugal yet again underrated, Finland showing they can be top 10 if they want and an Israeli kid who hit puberty while performing :)
No, Austria was the best, one of the best in ESC history!
Amazing job again, mate!
Cheers! Love your concept with doing them in under an hour! I did struggle with whether to speed it up....the old viewer habits of wanting something snappy and all that!
The scoreboard in the actual show looked like something for JESC.
Sweden caught up massively
EDIT : for some reason, I have warmed to 'Rock Me' in recent months. I still wouldn't rank it as the winner but I no longer feel hostility to it (I mean, we did get the wonderful Helga and Oliver the following year after all). I have long felt that the fact it was an upbeat song closing a generally dull selection of songs that helped it to win. I have changed my points below accordingly but, as I said, it is not my winner.
My points:
1pt United Kingdom
2pt Germany
3pt Austria
4pt Sweden
5pt Yugoslavia
6pt Spain
7pt Finland
8pt Portugal
10pt Italy
and
Denmark 12 points
Another great job, congratulations👏👏
Are you going to do The 90's??
Yes, but as years roll on the designs get more complex, so it'll take a bit more time. Hopefully there'll be a decent collection by the end!
5 juries in and Austria had gained more points than they had amassed in the 3 previous contests combined (86-88)
that wasn't difficult after 0 points in 1988 😉Greetings from Austria
@@stefan4997 a well deserved 0 points. It's sad that Thomas Forstner , who did amazingly well for Austria in 89, gained another 0 for Austria in 91. Here's a fun fact. The 2 closest finishes since 1975, in 88 and 91, Austria got nul points both times.
@@tariqkhader6196 I know ... I'm from Austria and that was my time when I watched the ESC ... today this event is just horrible shit
It's hard to believe that ESC 89 has any relation to the Esc Of the 2020s

54:00 So sad 😢
You look funny
Great job there once again. I really love the purple light appearing across countries when they got their points, it looks amazing! Nice idea wit the waving flags too, but there's something I noticed about them, you never use rectangular ones! Is there a reason behind that?
Thank you! Yes there is a reason - there's a great resource called countryflags.com and they have free downloadable images of flags and you can get them square or circular or rectangular etc...however, the rectangular ones aren't standardised in shape. The Belgian flag is practically square, the Luxembourg one is different to the French one and so on...not to mention Switzerland! So I'd have to artwork them up to work in a grid - to make them a similar size, otherwise it'd be really noticeable that they are all different shapes. That's why I've largely stuck with squares or circles so far.
The voting would have been much more exciting if the order of voting countries was opposite. Yugoslavia scored 85% of their total points after first 14 juries (117 of 137).
It would have, absolutely. at one point in reverse order, five countries at the top of the board would be within three points of each other. Yugoslavia and Denmark would be nowhere in the voting until past the halfway stage.
@@JeSuisRene They would be 11th and 12th place after first eight voting countries.
Ho sempre pensato che l'Italia mandasse canzoni non all'altezza proprio per scongiurare l'organizzazione dell'Eurofestival
Loads of good songs in 1989. I like all of them but l LOVE the likes of Sweden, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Greece….well… I can mention all of them, basically.😊
Thanks everyone for liking Finland's song, we were REALLY robbed that year.
You so weren't!
Never understood why she scored so highly, I thought it was very dull
What a grudge, what a hatred against Turkey, It's unbelievable

Bravo jugo kako se smorio ovaj mali engleski komentarcic
what happened to 1988? :(
Maybe this should have been titled ... 'nooo! Not Yogoslavia again!'. (Said from U.K perspective)
Its a nice score board, but I keep mistaking these for the real ones and then realize the computer generated score boards were still much more primitive that year. As someone who is interested in the evolution of computers and broadcasting technologies, I prefer to see the scoreboards presented as authentically as possible.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, and thanks for the comment before the comma lol. Otherwise there's plenty of videos around on CZcams with the actual scoreboards, as you know. I do make an effort to state the aim of the channel on both the video description (which is a useful read, sometimes) and the channel 'about' page. I even talk a little about the evolution of the technology and how design has been applied to it, so although I am replacing the original design, I'm not ignoring it.
@@thereorderboard I must take this opportunity to praise your scoreboards, they seem based on the 1998 design principles and that year had one of the best (it not the best) score boards ever. Would your software extend to emulating an electo-mechanical scoreboard?
Turkey
Cyprus 12p
Iceland didn’t deserve nul points
The Spanish song deserved a better position. A song by maestro Juan Carlos Calderon and the great voice of NINA. Whichever country came behind Yugoslavia deserved to win. It's a shame to say that the only time Yugoslavia won Eurovision was with this song, remembered as one of the worst winning songs of the Festival.
