An edited down version of the spectacular 1985 Eurovision Song Contest in Gothenburg, Sweden with a scoreboard using today’s technology. Nothing but a fun lockdown project.
This edit will give a flavour of the evening (4th May) with Terry Wogan’s UK commentary, although as Terry was full of flu, he didn’t travel to Sweden and commentated from London. Pictures come from Austria’s transmission (see credits). Overall the contest had a high quality, with some interesting parts. The opening number by host Lill Lindfors, Spain’s amazing vocals, Denmark’s child star, the Israeli entry onto the stage and Sweden’s intro all deserved some extra time, as did the interval act.
SVT pulled out all the stops for it’s first contest in ten years with a large stage with all the 80s modcons of neon lighting, white metal scaffolds, back lighting and clear plastic globes! Everything was on stage too...even Frank Naef. It’s worth noting how little French is spoken in this programme, and you’ll have to go down to tenth in the final order of things to find a song in French (although this fact is helped by the Swiss opting to sing in German, and the Belgians singing in the Flemish this year).
DESIGN AND THE BOARD
SVT had a new scoreboard but from a familiar country, as the credits list Wige Data as the scoreboard supplier- a company that is still around today, based in Germany. The scoreboard is notable for the first time rankings are shown during the voting process - there was more computational stuff going on in the board than just showing numbers! I’ve replicated this for my graphics, although the full read out by Lil isn’t really required on the re-order board!
The competition logo is prominent in the set but typeface for the smaller logo text (Sweden 1985) isn’t carried elsewhere, but we do have uniformity between lower thirds and the scoreboard! This time they use Memphis, a font designed in Weimar Germany (1929) by the Stempel foundry. It’s had many reworks pre-digitisation, and I picked up a free version online. You’ll notice the few occasions I’ve kept the original song straps in, the country flags seem a little off centre. I’m fairly sure they are a masked off camera shot of the scoreboard - a sign of how little memory the (probably Aston) generator had - no ability to show memory heavy flags!
It was clear that a more human, script typeface should take centre stage with Memphis providing the more rational text, as with the logo layout. I didn’t manage to identify either typeface in the logo, so I picked the wonderful ‘Arkipelago’ by Nasir Udin via FontsArena.com for my display typeface.
I had a bit of a reworking of the way the board re-arranges for this year, mimicking more of what we see in today’s scoreboards and opted for a typographical way of awarding the points. In re-order board style, I’m sticking with Swedish in the hope you might pick something up...I did! In addition, the board now evaluates all points awarded (not just 8, 10s and 12s) - even though this ranking system isn’t in use in the contest yet.
TRANSFER NEWS (source: Wiki)
OUT: The Netherlands miss their first contest since 1956, as the show was scheduled for the same day as the Dutch Remembrance of the Dead. Similarly, the anniversary of Tito’s death in Yugoslavia meant they also stayed away.
BACK: Greece came back hoping for a stronger show, and so did Israel as there wasn’t a date clash.
INTERVAL ACT
Guitars Unlimited with Swedish Evergreens - I’ve kept some of it in. Two guys on guitars, but I found it quite spell-binding. Best interval act since 1980, I’d say.

1985 was one of the best editions of Eurovision
song contest
Apart from 1985, the majority of 80’s Eurovision was a bit of a washout, although they all had their very good highlights. Who remember’s 1987 when nearly every single artist wore white and had mullets.
And we must also give credit to Lill Lindfors. She ran the show that night like a boss!
And to add, she's just sitting there watching all the acts, which is cute.
Not really... boring!
20:07 Love the joke from Lil Lindfors here "It doesn't mean what you think it means ;D" lol
i think she was serious - it DOES sounds suspiciously sexual
@@SimsMoyal Yes, but she didn't have to bring it up
I am addicted to your scoreboards. This is just an amazing job you've done. Congrats.
Thank you very much!
really glad you kept the Lill Lindfors moment for the genuine "oh look, AHHHHHHHHH" from Terry
It is so good to have an audience that makes some noise.. maybe a bit tooo much but after the stunning silence of a funeral that was Luxembourg in '84 everything is welcome!
Lux 1984 was the worst of the 1980s from every aspect
The technical skill of your scoreboards is seriously impressive, well done! I have to ask, though, why make the scoreboards in the language of each participating country even when that wasn't the case with the actual scoreboards?
I personally think it’s a great idea
Fun fact: spanish representative was our king's lover at that time
wow this is so fabulous! well done on all the hard work
Thank you! Cheers!

Oooooo diday diday day ❤
this is amazing, one of the best ideas you could have and the most amazing designs within the fandom, congratulations!!
Thank you so much!!
Just came across this one. Great scoreboard again!
Gotta admit, I found it hilarious that the UK gave Germany 1 point, and then Terry is like... "Welp!" XD
Yeah.... the drama was complete! They were quite lucky with the running order in that matter...
This is simply amazing, thank you very much!
What a splendid job you've done! My favorite contest!
You did an amazing job here yet again and this was such a strong year too.
What a wonderful job you are doing!! Is wonderful to see these former voting with your scoreboard because everything gets thrilling and exciting despite we all know the final result and makes easier to follow it 😇. Go ahead with this 😜
Sick graphics on the scoreboard, I must say. Even translations of 1-12 points are tops!
Oh, and hey, Rolf Løvland was also responsible for writing and playing keyboards for Norway's next win in 1995 as part of Secret Garden with Fionnuala Sherry, who played the violin/fiddle, featuring Gunnhild Tvinnereim on the sparse amount of vocals. He also composed their entries in 1987 (Kate Gulbrandsen - "Mitt liv" (written with Hanne from Bobbysocks!)) & 1994 (Elisabeth Andreassen & Jan Werner Danielsen- "Duett" (performed with Elisabeth from Bobbysocks!)). Secret Garden also did the original version of the classic song "You Raise Me Up" with Dermot Kennedy on vocals, and he later represented Ireland in 2006 at Eurovision with "Every Song Is A Cry For Love" and came 10th.
Does 1985 have the best ever opening to the Eurovision Song Contest? I’d say so.
This was really a weird voting haha
Congrats in your amazing work
I was watching an interview that Kiki was screaming “I can’t win I’m pregnant 🤰 “!
My top 10 for 1985 (points, EDITED)

1:02:50 Turkey 12 points! Priceless BRING THE OLD VOTING SYSTEM BACK LET ALL POINTS BE HEARD (THEY DESERVE IT
The Iberian peninsula was ostracized in this edition
Also, the title of the video reminds of when Jendrik used "Rattatam" in one of his ESC diary videos.
Can anyone confirm this is the first time a performer has won in his/her actual birthplace (Elisabeth Andreassen was born in Gothenburg)?
In fact Elisabeth Andreassen was from Sykkylven at the Northwesterm part of Norway. They moved to Sweden when she was around 7 years old. After Eurovision she moved to back to Norway again.
This is amazing, I'm so totally waiting for the next one, are you planning to do until 2002?
Thank you! Yes, that's the plan - although the designs get more complicated as the years go on, and well who knows, if the UK lockdown eases I may have less free time so the rate at which the videos are uploaded will slow. At the moment it's one a weekend...that would take me 6 months, am hoping to get slightly more social life in that time :-) Thanks for taking an interest!
@@thereorderboard I am part of the biggest Spanish forum and some of us are meeting every Wednesday and Saturday to watch these 80s ESCs and other frm the 90s and 70s. We watched 1983 and turned to your video when the voting started. Everyone was so amazed and thrilled. Today actually we are going to watch 1981, and the plan was doing the same, so thanks again.
And no matter the pace, keep uploading, you will have a loyal audience.
@@AlmostDon Oh wow! That's so lovely to hear - that's made my day. I do genuinely think it helps tell the story so much better and I'm really enjoying doing it. All the best to your forum from here, have fun! x

Aden Harrison 1992 has just been done so I am assuming that 1993 will be released in, what is now, a week and a half.

This happened on my birthday, five years before I was born hehe... Vikki Watson, the UK entrant, is now releasing new age-y music under the name Aeone. Definitely worth checking out. Also, is there any way you can upload your fonts folder? Like just compress it all and upload it somewhere? I love all the fonts you use in these videos and they make the videos even better. I ask only because I like the ones you've downloaded already, but I have bookmarked the site you mention in your description. :) I love watching these so much! :) Oh, and Kikki later did a duet with Dr. Alban as a version of the song "Papaya Coconut" lol! Thank you so much (or as Finns say, kiitos paljon!).
This is the final. Ok. All the tv. Commentators. Know the Final marks. And so the winners.
2023 scoreboard (12 points) was inspired by this
I wonder when will you make such a cool scoreboard about Eurovision 1979 or 1999 and whether the names of the countries will appear in Hebrew. This will be neat :)
1999 is online and in Hebrew. Impressive.
I am listening to the voting part in speed x 2 - they were so slow in 1985! speed x 2 makes much more sense!
42:33 the winner out of the top 5 😵
It was a drama.
The best song of the evening was the spanish one! La fiesta termino! A jem
No bad song a the singer was awful bad person
I'm just 6 songs in... IS SHE SITTING ON STAGE THE WHOLE TIME???
Yea, she's a bit like a madame watching all her girls perform. It's slightly awkward, but it's worth noting that they clearly wanted her as a 'compere' rather than just a presenter, with the opening number. Really this is the Lill Lindfors show, featuring Eurovision :-)
@@thereorderboard I saw that she won the poll of favourite presenter of the 80s, so it worked. Cue: 'when you're good to mama' from Chicago.
Had austria been the last to vote, it would’ve made the vote close right down to the last 12, with germany getting zero from austria and norway getting the 12
Lol drags it out. Huge Pauses
Oh dear, all those years we were told the jurors could not hear the other votes until after they had awarded their points and Colin Berry let the cat out of the bag
Can you elaborate?
Thanks.
@@ponyclub3198 Colin said when announcing the douze “we like other juries are more than happy to award Norway 12 points
The jurors can’t hear but the jury spokespersons, like Colin Berry, have to be on the line to know when it is their turn.

Why is there no sound during the (winning) song number 13 from Norway?
Line 1 of the description...
the little kid stole the show for denmark's song :D
I wonder who that charming Swedish lady is that Wogan refers to as having been a guest on his show the night before.
I can finally answer my own question - it was a journalist called Maria Scherer.
Austria and Germany supposed to help each other by the neighbors rule but Austria will never miss a chance to screw Germany off
Didn't you have the 1988 and 1989 reorder boards somewhere?
Hi unfortunately they've been taken down as Turkey doesn't want you to see their song. I'm unsure as to whether to just mute them and release them back into the wild!
How come there’s no sound on Norway’s entry ?!
This is due to copyright restrictions. It was either have the video online or not have any sound on Norway unfortunately.
14:59 - 😳
Greece 12p
Germany robbed. Meanwhile why did the Turkish jury think that snore fest from Belgium worthy of any points at all!
One of the weaker years and I have to say that I liked Lil but she waffles on too long during the voting going through the top 5 after every vote. My points for 85:
1pt Germany
2pt Greece
3pt Portugal
4pt Denmark
5pt Israel
6pt Turkey
7pt Sweden
8pt Norway (a worthy winner in a weak year)
10pt Finland
and finally
Spain 12 points!
@@dawidjan1993
Not as strong as 81 and 88
@@dawidjan1993 The most dramatic voting ever if you ask me. But...... I am Norwegian though.......

Wish You have done with original black scoreboard like the other ones.
Turkish jury gave Winner Norway 0 & Germany 0 too 2 nd place. What??😄😂
Why do i have to use an vpn to watch this
Hi - are you watching from Sweden? For some reason SVT are strongly protecting their copyright over Lill Lindfors losing her skirt and wanted me to cut it out for Swedish viewers. I'd like to keep that part visible to the 97% of the channel audience that aren't in Sweden. Sorry!
Yes im from sweden thats fckin stupid as is the rules about corona
Edit i know why its due to that eu dosent like that they show that
UK is like - take that for the London bombing 40 years ago - you are welcome ! X-DD
