How To Pollard Eucalyptus / Pruning Eucalyptus

- Is your Eucalyptus overgrown? Let me show you how to pollard it so that it’s a more manageable size and healthier plant. This is the second time we have pruned our eucalyptus hedge this way. Whilst it seems brutal, we know that this works for us here in UK and creates the exact hedge that we are looking for.

G'day, ozzy horticulturalist here. That mottling on your plant isn't a pest or disease, it's just a sign of stress from the cold, so don't freak out when you see it again in your next winter.

Hi Annette, thank you. I watched your video a few weeks ago but sadly my Gunnii that I planted last year was looking very dead at the time, however, I left it alone after watching your video and I resisted the urge to dig him up and throw him on the compost heap! There is growth at the very bottom, right at the base there are tiny new leaves emerging so it's not dead after all! Thank you I think you may have saved his life haha I will have to chop him right back though as most of it looks dead above but he's not done for completely :) We did have -11c here in North Yorkshire in December and the snow stayed for a week so some things I planted last year didn't make it but I'm happy to say Gunnii looks like he may be okay x

@@cottoverdi Yes, I'm amazed ! I'm so glad I watched your video and waited. The entire length which was about 4 or 5 feet tall is black and dead but I may have to rename him 'Phoenix' because he is definitely rising from the ground now he must be the tiniest eucalyptus ever now haha. I have several clematis that have done the same this year, Tetrarose completely died back to nothing just one or two tiny buds at the very base, one is an evergreen Apple Blossom - completely died back too but now there are tiny new stems of hope poking through the soil :)

Where I live in South Australia, the electric power companies pollard the gum trees all the time to keep them away from power lines so they don’t rub or drop on them and cause bush fires.

Our neighbour let their eucalyptus grow unchecked, it ended up over 60 ft. Shaded our garden and dropped leaves everywhere. They eventually had it removed after repeated requests to cut it back. So definitely keep it under control.
Yes, they will grow fast if not kept in check. We maintain our hedge every year and so it's really no trouble at all.

This was useful! I've a single main stem it's getting some height on it but it's not very thick, If I cut it back will it continue to thicken or am I best leaving it for another season?
Hi there, gosh, I've never tried to chop a single young stem. I'd leave it for another year and let it just bush out a bit.
I have a single stem that’s is shooting up so fast and it’s becoming thick as well. I wonder how to shorten the plant and make the shrub instead of having the tree, any ideas? Thank you!
Hi, please don't prune your eucalyptus now! The plants are heading into dormancy and shouldn't have any open cuts because it makes them susceptible to damage from the cold. Wait until the end of March and then pollard the thick stem. I have loads of videos on how to do this on my 'Eucalyptus' playlist so do take a look.
