      He's so -ve nearly all the time and veils it with the claims of being 'objective' and the usual 'cash grab' ploys.
      Oldskool mindset. Nowadays, games & ratings are very subjective. A sweeping review score matters not anymore: the sales do because whereas 10 years ago a game selling say '3 million' would be considered 'Good' - nowadays even 'Nicher' games sell well over 10 million. Twilight Princess HD. Also reflects the massively increased population in general.

      My fear is that once digital becomes the norm and physical goes away, companies focus more on one-and-done experiences and stop making games that are meant to last. Game design philosophy in the 80s and early 90s was basically "Let's give players a reason to keep coming back." Arcade games like Pac-Man and Galaga asked you to get higher scores, Sonic games challenged you to beat the levels as fast as possible, Super Metroid let you do things out of order to make each playthrough different, Final Fantasy allowed you to experiment with different teams and setups, etc. Games nowadays seem more interested in giving amazing experiences that are more akin to movies. They put so much care into the story that the gameplay lacks the kind of care that was given previously. That's not to say these games are bad or even that they are unfulfilling, but they don't really give you very much reason to play them more than once. The Last of Us, Uncharted, God of War, Red Dead Redemption, even Nintendo games like Breath of the Wild. These games are laser focused on making your first experience the most amazing thing ever, only for the impact to diminish exponentially when you try to play through them again. I'm glad that Indie games have been picking up the slack with games like Hollow Knight and Celeste, but it feels like this game design philosophy is mostly dead in the industry. And once gaming goes all digital, game devs will have little reason to make these kinds of games anymore.

      Sure, it’s crazy to think that perhaps some day streaming services will be norm but I don’t think they’ll be the only alternative for decades to come. As of now, I’m happy with subscription services of retro games, since it’s a better deal than buying each game individually, imo.

It's _tangible,_ it's _tactile,_ it's something I can _physically touch_ and know that I own it - it's _mine._ Yeah, it might legally only be a licence, but it's more than that. It's an object, fashioned deliberately and it has a history. Somebody bought it when it was brand new. It probably traded hands a lot before it got to be in my possession - it's got a story behind it. As does every other physical copy of every other game ever made.
      They're not just some data held on a server somewhere, they're real. If I'm playing a game, it's all being done right in front of me. The device that I own is doing all of the computational work, interfacing with whatever I've put into its receptacle.
      It's a deeply personal experience; an authenticity that connects you to everyone that might have ever played that game; an experience that is only enhanced by your past self being amongst those, or if you're only just adding yourself to that list.
      It's difficult to put to words exactly how it makes me feel, but I know that it definitely does not feel the same if the game is digital - even though it might be downloaded to my console, a fundamental element of that pure experience is already missing. If the industry shifts any further, that experience will be lost forever, and that's upsetting to think about.

It can be hard to achieve, but there's nothing more satisfying seeing Mario launch after a successful wall kick. Compare that to how it's used nowadays where the timing window is so wide you'd have to physically not be holding your controller to mess it up. One thing that I'd ike to discuss that you talked briefly about is that these games, except Sunshine, are designed to be played however the player wants to, in order to simply finish the game.
    In that respect, Mario 64 excells, because apart from the first courses, nay, the first mission in the first one, you can do whatever you want to finish the game, you just need 70 stars out of the 120 in the game (a little above half of the stars in the game, about 58%) and defeating the final boss.
    Galaxy feels slower in that regard because it has an intro, a tutorial and a tutorial mission. Then you open the first dome, where you can access various galaxy (still at a slower rate), but then you have to at least defeat the boss of that dome to access the next one. That is to say, not only you need 60 out of 120 stars, literally half of the stars in the game, but you are forced to do more specific missions. In addition, there are different star requirements for each levle in each world, some stars are tied to the random comets, some you can get only by collecting some particular previous ones, and others are only unlocked after you beat the game for the first time, not to mention what happens after getting 120 stars and defeating the final boss again.
    Sunshine limits you even more, because to finish the game you need to get the first shine and the first seven in the seven worlds in this game, you don't have a choice. You have to get 50 out of 120 shines, but you are forced to play specific ones, the others sadly don't matter at all.
    It's funny how the focus on story is the element that forces players to play more and more specific missions in them to simply finish the game.
    Galaxy does a fine job balancing it, but the best one in this respect is the latest game in this style, Odyssey, which has some moons that you have to get to progress the story in the kingdoms and the overarching one, but you still have so much freedom, unlocking new kingdoms is related to a certain number of moons in the current one and there are so many all around.
    That said, I still love all of these games so much, because they're all really fun, but it's interesting to compare them in various ways, a big one being what levels are obligatory in order to at least beat the game, which is what most players are expected to do.

    • @jjc4924
      @jjc4924 Před 3 lety

      Yeah. I agree whole hardly. Especially with Sunshine. That's one of the reasons why I don't go back to Sunshine that often and being one of my least favorite 3D Mario games. Besides halve of the broken level designs, mission structured & Shine Sprites placements that are both being aggravating & obnoxious, going through every single courses and episodes 1-7 in order to unlock the final level of the game instead of just collecting the amount of Shine Sprites that you only need and have an option is so tedious to do & it makes collecting the extra shines really worthless. Granted; u don't need to 100% the game in order to beat the game & it's worthless anyway since 100% it & reward u get sucks. But since Sunshine is an follow up to 64 with it's open sandbox style, it makes it so much worst. Besides improvement controls & mechanics that Sunshine does do better than 64, Sunshine's level wise was an humongous step backwards from 64 that not even an great control or mechanics can make up it's horrendous game design choices. Wish is sad because Sunshine could've been alot better if they had more time.

    • @jasonreed7522
      @jasonreed7522 Před rokem +1

      I find the controls difference between sunshine and 64 to be remarkable and probably responsible for much of the unwarranted hostility towards sunshine. This is just based on my experience of trying to play 64 for the first time and finding the controls to be atrocious (especially the camera).
      Otherwise much of the complains like bugs and frustrating levels is shared between the 2 with sunshine having a few more bugs (that i rarely encounter, even while trying) and 64 having worse level design. But i will say that this port is a definite downgrade for sunshine because of the controls changes, but maybe thats my muscle memory getting in the way amd having no ability to invert the y-axis controls to behave properly. (Like airplane stick controls, pull back to pick up the nose and go up)
      I haven't tried galaxy on the switch yet, but it was awesome on the Wii and I'm concerned the port messed up its controls as well.

    As someone who didn’t play any of these games until 3d allstars. I LOVE THESE GAMES. No frustration with starting all over, I feel it’s part of the game and so rewarding when you finally accomplish the goal. So when I replay it, every time I think back to where I was on a certain chapter that took forever to complete. Stages that are hard to complete gives me time to explore areas instead of zooming through stage after stage.

    I loath these moments in SM64, when you're standing on an edge and JUST WANT TO TURN AROUND. You move the stick backwards and Mario is RUNNING IN A CIRCLE OVER THE EDGE!

      And I agree with that statement, 100% The camera and pacing in Mario 64 and especially Sunshine... man, they were awful. People like to shit on old 3d games cameras (deservedly so), but Mario 64 (and Ocarina) tends to be overprotected because of the pioneer effect. I don't care if they arrived first or last, the negatives are present, why pretend otherwise?

      @Tattle Boad Ocarina of Time aged like milk, this isn't subjective. Controls, graphical engine, gameplay, etc.. they all aged badly. Regarding the overall music and the artstyle, these can be considered subjective, the music remains as good as ever... but that's it. Ocarina is arguably the most overrated game ever made, the praise for it's pioneer effect is perfectly valid, but to say the game itself is amazing? Especially nowadays? That's a clear sign of fanaticism.
