Arlo, you probably are right. Indeed, to move the next system MP4 and MO2 though I would leave off the 2 and just call it "Mario Odyssey World Tour" or something since adding a sequel moniker would hurt sales on a new system while an incorporative name would do so less. Indeed, they might make it similar to MO but give it a new name entirely.
That all said, I wonder why I'm the only person Who thinks the next system will follow the original Nintendo naming convention and be called: "The Super Switch"

I think one of the other things to consider is Miyamoto himself. The man has been reported to deny or delay games himself if they don't have that certain gimmick or feel that he is looking for. That's the biggest reason why we've never had another F-Zero game and why Star Fox Zero was the way it was. The story wraps itself up nicely and the major 3D Marios essentially NEVER get sequels. Yes, we got Galaxy 2, but 64, Sunshine and 3D World all skipped out on sequels. I had a theory about this a while back. I believe that Bowser's Fury was, at some point in time, the next 3D Mario game after Odyssey. Then, sometime during development, the team decided that for whatever reason it wasn't going to work as a full game. So they decided to take what they made, turn it into Bowser's Fury, and sell it alongside the 3D World port. After that, development on the next 3D Mario game basically restarted, which is why we haven't heard anything yet.

I’m tempted to believe this, but Bowser’s Fury directly uses 3DW’s engine and mechanics. I don’t think they would have gone that route if it was planned to be its own game, and I especially don’t think they would have scrapped and restarted development on it just to make it use that engine. Also, with the way the game is structured and the whole fury bowser mechanic, I feel like it should have been pretty obvious from the start that it wouldn’t work as a full game (and this is coming from a massive Bowser’s Fury fan).

Bowsers Fury uses so much of 3D World that I find it very hard that this was the case. It would seems more plausible if they used Odyssey’s base as a way of prototyping an open world game rather than 3D World. I'm thinking the reason why we haven't heard anything about a Super Mario Odyssey sequel is because the Super Mario Bros movie was such a huge endeavor that they wanted to solely focus on it. I don't think a lot of people really realize how big of a project that movie is. Not to mention tears of the Kingdom was also releasing this year, which is possibly the most anticipated game of the switches entire life cycle since breath of the Wild was released. I don't think that an announcement for Super Mario Odyssey would have overshadowed the release of tears of the Kingdom, but I think that tears of the kingdom would definitely have overshadowed the hype for a Mario Odyssey sequel.

My theory, its been in development hell. Miyamoto isn't happy with it, and isn't willing to release it until he's happy with it. At some point he may (or may have already) can it all together and just take whatever concepts he felt did work in its current build, and start from scratch making use of them in the Switch 2 launch game. But I think if they had a game they liked we'd, if not have it by now, at least have some details about it by now like we did with Tears of the Kingdom, and its unlikely they didn't start working on something after Odyssey, so whether its finally in a good state but they're holding it back for Switch 2, or its still not in a state he's happy with, it just makes the most sense that whatever they worked on just hasn't been good enough to meet Miyamoto's quality standards, and they weren't even willing to talk about it until it reached that threshold.

I doubt development hell and rather development shift, Miyamoto won’t stop the releasing of odyssey 2 if the team is making a good game. I think they have a couple of idea of odyssey DLC and decided to expand there, but realise the idea is not that related to odyssey so they decided to make a brand new game, they wanted the new areas to be connected and open world but it no longer fit in odyssey’s world travelling theme. They may also tried to make a new champion character and it doesn’t fit odyssey. They may also go back to the single theme of sunshine and had a single theme they want to expanded. Therefore, they ‘cancelled’ odyssey DLC and put all the ideas into a brand new project. I would predict this happened at 2020 as bowser’s fury needs probably a year to develop. Open world games have been traditional long to develop, look at the new donkey Kong which started development probably at 2017, Zelda BotW and TotK took 6 years of development(2011-2017, 2017-2023) Pokémon is rushed we can tell so I would think it’s too late to launch with new console and a new linear galaxy game will be the launch game.

I wish the more nonlinear nature of the world in Bowser's Fury would be made into a full game and combine with some of what Odessy did with it's mechanics, and story/set pieces. The 3D Mario core team (EPD Tokyo) is only responsible for the conceptualization of Bowser's Fury. The production of most of it was handled by the American dev team of Nintendo, NST. Considering this, they have started developing the next 3D Mario way before Bowser's Fury ever released. There's also to consider Mario's taking as much time as Zelda did, and thus could be a title for the latter half of this year. However, it could also be taking so long because it's an open world title like Bowser's Fury or/and a launch title for the next system.
