About The Game:

I think the lack of power combinations since 64 is due to HAL going for the Kirby's Superstar path, with the variety coming from the multiple attacks via each copy ability rather than the combined powers each with a single type of attack.

They're also just plain cool. I love the fireworks one for pretty much the same reason.

while I was working at a daycare, one day I thought I'd bring up an n64 emulator on my phone, ALL of the kids wanted to play this game.
The kids know how to have a good childhood
Another secret in the game: If you suck up certain enemies and instead of swallowing them press "R" (In Wii U) You'll hold them over your head and use their unique traits (That one enemy with the umbrella gives you the ability to glide down etc.)
LiterallyNick yea, I used that alot. lots of extra depth with all 50+ enemy hold abilities.
My favorite thing to do as a kid was inhale the purple glider enemy and hold it above my head and just glide across the level to see how far I could get

This game will always hold a special place in my heart. It was my very first video game; a Christmas present after my mom noticed me enjoying it so much back when McDonalds still had N64 consoles in (some of) their play areas.
This game was my introduction to the Kirby series, and it's still my favorite of the bunch, much thanks to the combinations!
Probably my second favorite Kirby game, next to Planet Robobot.

Has Jirard played "Kirby and the Rainbow Curse" yet? I really loved that game because it helped me get through a really tough time a few years back.
This is the only Kirby game where Kirby has limited floating, meaning that there is an actual element of challange to the platforming.

I still have this game. I never got all the crystals for the true ending though.
there's a bit of a glitch for the shard you get for beating the snowman mid boss where if you collect the shard and leave at the same time with double fire it erases it from the game but other than that there is absolutely no reason to not complete this game. Do it!
Also, the final boss cries blood, in a kirby game!
yeah I played this game dozens of times as kid, but never collected all the shards. Of course this was before CZcams where you could look up guides. I did play it on the Virtual Wii, but still never had the desire to collect all the shards to get the true final boss

Souns a lot like BotW =/ now, being serious, i doubt he would like the game, i think he would not like it either because people love that game instead of Sticker Star and/or Color Splash (which he as a nintendo apologist has to defend from any criticism) OR because the most rabid fanboys would just ruin the experience with their min/maxing "you played the game wrong" attitude...or just because the game would feel too "old/outdated" for him if he has never touched it =/
Honestly speaking, even though this is my favorite Kirby game, I really think you should've done dreamland 3 before this, as I consider crystal shards to be the second half to that game, similar to sonic 3 and sonic & knuckles, especially with ado/Adeline and zero/02

If you're on an N64 nostalgia trip can I make a suggestion to complete Turok Dinosaur Hunter? I remember wanting this game so much when I was really little but my mom wouldn't buy it for me because she said it was too violent. But my love of Dinosaurs drove me to convince my grandma who didn't know anything about video games to pick it up for me at Toy's R Us. I got home super excited only to be confused as to why the game wouldn't fit in my Super Nintendo. Then promptly grounded by my mom when she found out I went behind her back and she returned the game. Didn't get a chance to play until years later when I saw it at Blockbuster. Man, nostalgic overload.

Seeds of Evil was great bro, it was Wars and 3 that kinda killed the series. Although I liked Evolution alot and the one for 360 while not a real Turok game was also really good.

I don't know if that gives you more than one screen, but there is a fusion of Kirby and all the main bosses for one of the Boss Rush screens.

The mix system is honestly why I love this game so much, that and squeak squad. Kirby games are super fun but the mixing was always awesome to do. Besides that my favorite Kirby games are the ones with co-op... BRING ON THE SWITCH KIRBY!
The real reason ability mixing isn't in most Kirby games is because it would be hard to add more abilities. Kirby 64 had only 7 base abilities, and 28 total combinations. Future Kirby games would match the total number of combinations with fully fleshed out abilities. Honestly, I think it's a step up that ability mixing isn't the main focus.
Not only that, but the abilities in Kirby 64 are way simplified, as each ability (including mixed ones) can only do one attack (Maybe the fridge is more unique in that it can also heal you). In Kirby Super Star/Ultra, and any game that comes after Kirby Return to Dreamland (not counting spin-offs), every ability has an entire move set of its own, not counting abilities with limited quantity of times it can be used, such as Crash, or that are under a time limit (or limited until the level is over), such as the Super Abilities, and Hypernova.

Also, I hope the Switch Kirby game's combo abilities are more involved. I love this game to death (first Kirby game I played, would always rent it from Blockbuster), but after playing Super Star, and the games after Return to Dreamland, the one use abilities in Crystal Shards definitely seem lackluster, especially since how some were pretty ineffective or uninspired (Ice/Fire or Rock/Electric, even if the latter was kind of fun, it was chaotic, to say the least).

Dream Course (Golf with way worse controls and more or less actively punishing you for not being perfect), Tilt and Tumble (Fun idea until you realize that the Gameboy only really let you see clearly from a few different angles and tilting to move actually made you lose sight of your game and I did 100% it as a rental), Avalanche (If your bad at those kind of games, like me) and Pinball (Its pinball, the game is random, even with knowledge of how the ball moves, its still a coin toss to get it where you want it to go), all arguably bad games maybe not universally bad, but...
+Tsukikage noknight Also, Dreamland 2, at least if you go for 100% completion. Who thought using the worst abilities of the worst characters in the worst levels for those abilities would be fun? And who thought trial & error autoscrolling rooms would be fun?
Squeek Squad sucks too but mostly because it took being easy to such extremes that everything felt pointless.
The worst part about Kirby 64 is that it requires you to use the N64's d-pad. Which means holding that left prong of the controller you never use.
Super Star Ultra was my first (and only) forte into the Kirby-verse, but I still have fond memories of my time with him. Anyone who can ingest an entire being alive, fuse with them, use their powers, and then spawn a clone ally of said being should be feared. HE IS KIRBY, DESTROYER OF LIFE!

Okay, even as a Kirby 64 fan.... I mean, just look at my avatar. Super Star was NOT just a "Mini Game Compilation".... The gameplay in that game is still pretty great, even to this day. Though, I do prefer the DS version. Since some of the additions make the game a lot better. Like Meta Knightmare Mode, Revenge of the King, and the True Arena....

While I like Kirby 64, it just cannot compare to how good Superstar Ultra was.
Well, something i often say is that SNES games age better than N64 games, it also doesn't helps Crystal Shards that:
1.- The gameplay was more fluid in Super Star (you know, abilities having a wide variety of techniques).
2.- There's a little more "flair" to the game with Kirby getting hats out of his abilities.
3.- The co-op friendly "partner" system
4.- The gameplay "jumps" between sections for a little more variety
ex: A remake that added even more stuff + keepin the visuals up to date =/
I used to not like this game because there were no hats and the copy abilities were different but you inspired me to play it again and now I LOVE it.

Man, when i was a kid and my mum surprised my brother and i with this game, i spent hours mixing. It was my favourite thing. I loved being the 'rock-bird'. Ah, nostalgia, you're the best kind of drug!
I loved that hopping race when I was younger. It's honestly one of two real memories I have of this game. The other is Ice Skating. I loved the Ice Skating power-up combo.
That secret ending is straight-up Starfox boss fight and Starfox cutscene, but I still love it. Probably because I love Starfox as much as Kirby.

I remember playing the game shortly after its original release. Finished the game and got the bad ending, but I didn't know it was the "bad" one until a few years later when I sat down to replay the game to relieve old memories. This time I collected all of 'em shards. Miracle Matter was harder to beat somehow but then, I was shocked to realize that there was more: the true final boss known as Zero Two (the music of that particular battle, though... that is some intense, melancholic stuff).
To sum everything, I simply had no idea that different endings by doing certain actions was a thing.
I rented this game so many times until I completed it back in the day. So many memories!
The feeeeelllls, the nostalgic feels. I loved playing this game so much, would rent it every weekend the local family video had it in stock. So many weekends spent playing this game. Can't wait for the new one.
