About The Game:
Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game franchise created and produced by Sega. The franchise centers on a series of speed-based platform games. The protagonist of the series is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog named Sonic, whose peaceful life is often interrupted by the series' main antagonist, Doctor Eggman. Typically, Sonic-usually along with some of his friends, such as Tails, Amy, and Knuckles-must stop Eggman and foil any plans of world domination. The first game in the series, released in 1991, was conceived by Sega's Sonic Team division after Sega requested a mascot character. The title was a success, it spawned many sequels, and it transformed Sega into a leading video game company during the 16-bit era in the early to mid 1990s.

While we are on the topic of nostalgia, remember a time where you were already considered a gamer when you said "I like video games"? A time where there was no such thing as "casuals" vs. "hardcore players"? I don't think anyone likes Big THAT much. It was a shame that one of the two times he was playable was a "terrible fishing game" as people say. (I haven't played it.) Personally, I think more people would have liked him if he was implemented into the games better.
If I were to rate myself on the scale you described Oxymoron, I would but myself between "casual" and "hardcore," but I really don't like using those terms to describe what type of gamer I am. I am a gamer, plain and simple. I can't even think off a time I would use those terms outside of game difficulty.
When they say "They wanted the game more powerful than the Genesis but not as powerful as the Saturn." They basically mean a Megadrive with a Mega CD and a 32x attached.

graywolf the 45th I wholeheartedly agree with you. I wish they would renew it and bring it back. But I think the reason why it’s been canceled, is what you’re seeing in the comment section here. Everyone probably roasted it so much, that the creators just said nobody likes it, let’s pull it off of TV. When in fact I’m sure there are many people who liked it, and enjoyed watching it, more than there were people hating it and saying it was bad. And by roasting in saying it’s bad, I’m talking about the people who are crapping on the 3-D games. Yes there were some bad ones, but there were some good ones too. And the fact that people are forgetting about other games that exist in the sonic universe. TLDR, the naysayers are the fact that the show isn’t on TV anymore.
I'd like the Boom cartoon more if it just took place in the main canon imo.
The show's not that great. It's okay, but there isn't much substance. They don't really do anything interesting or live in an interesting world, where the main characters are the most interesting. I'd prefer it that a lot of random characters also had special abilities or something, but just focused on Sonic. It's not bad, but a lot of missed potential.
But that's just me.

He never said modern sonic sucked, he never said modern sonic was terrible.
What he basically said is that the modern sonics are not very stable, sometimes they are pretty damn good sometimes they are just meh and then other times its more like "WTF IS THIS?!"
He also said something to the extent of "Some of them came close to being as good as the older games" which means he admits that some of the modern sonic games were pretty good. Yeah he still said they aren't as good but he absolutely did not say all modern sonic games were trash.

If being "unstable" is a great issue then that logic easily applies to the classic games,borderline bad level design and several game breaking bugs is far from being different or better than what the modern games have.
Again,putting the classics in such a high place is hardly being fair or giving a real review instead of a biased opinion ,games like Generations and Unleashed are easily on par with most of the classics.

I swear, every self-proclaimed "Sonic fan" with a decent CZcams following all of a sudden wants to hate on Colors and Generations. Flawed and not perfect sure, but don't undermine those games. Colors being so good led to Generations, which has eventually lead to that small boost Sonic needed to even arrive here at Mania and Forces.

@Retcon I think it's more of the fact that the 3D fans are a bit sensitive, because their games are always picked on by the gaming media. I mean one bad 3D Sonic game comes out and it's back to " Sonic is never good " memes. While 2D Sonic has had bad games like Sonic Labyrinth and the media doesn't say anything. There's also bandwagons when it comes to the 3D games, one moment Sonic Adventure is good, the next, it's "just as bad as the other 3D games ", you would be tired of all this BS.
I would give anything to get people to fucking shut up about the Adventure series... I've heard enough people talk about it, I don't want to hear anymore.

And the only reason you hear about the Adventure series is because they were the first 3D Sonics after the Sprite base games and no one wanted a more 3D Sonics. The appeal wore off is the best way I could explain it. They might not of been bad but that's not what people wanted from Sonic.

Good does not mean trash. As he called the first few "amazing" it's hard to argue that any future Sonic game reached those heights. Sonic Colors and Generations are both good Sonic games, modern sonic hate is as strong as ever.
Zero space053 Unleashed was good too. So were the DS games(except Chronicles)
Tanner Price I would include Unleashed but thats the players choice, for me I love unleashed. The night time stages are fun and day time stages are my fav part. Day time sonics biggest issue is his drift but they improved and learned from it in Colors and generations so Im fine with it.

I feel bad now. All we want from Sonic is a trip back to the past, while his rival, Mario keeps evolving. Sonic's evolution to 3D is not as smooth as Mario, sure, but we need to let Sonic grows rather than letting him forever be a pixel nostalgic trip.

Having picked up two copies of this (one for PS4 and one for PC) - I really enjoyed this game. I've still not completed all of it as of yet, but I definitely intend to do so. Awesome video as always Jirard!

It's actually good to see a classic franchise go back to its roots. This, along with Crash (no need to get competitive) finally received the treatment it needed, although I personally wish that the Crash remasters had some new levels.

Shaun Dewey square is amazing, and was also around back in the golden age. Those games of theirs havent aged well tho, so i love where they've been heading recently... They just need a little work

The dream: when that game you loved as a child, instead of reinventing itself, simply grows up with you. Maybe others grew up with Sonic Adventure, Sonic Racing, etc., and that's cool. For those of us who grew up with Sonic 1, 2, and 3, and Sonic & Knuckles, all we really ever wanted was for that same series to pick up where it left off. Give us our pinball machine 2-D gameplay, give us our throw-caution-to-the-wind roller coaster loops and obstacles, give us our funky maybe-or-maybe-not-Michael Jackson instrumentals, give us cameos from those obscure characters you promised us (I saw that Hornet truck!), and give it to us all... over... again. But better. That's the formula. We will always light up like kids on Christmas when they stick to that formula.

Just let people share their opinions and have a rational discussion about it like you would irl instead of getting triggered and writing rude comments. Unless you aren't capable of doing that, in which case you shouldn't have access to the internet in the first place.

I know this isn't a 3d sonic game but does nobody remember the ds games, my childhood is literally spending hours on sonic rush doing the most tricks I could and also the other ones(which I don't remember their names) were... decent for me
_Chris Aviles_ The Advance and Rush trilogy we're the most praiseworthy parts of the Sonic series since they were and still are genuinely fun to play. However people refuse to take that into account when debating if Sonic was ever good sadly.

Inquisitor Of Extreme Prejudice how is my taste the same as danks, he was being sarcastic whereas I don't like generations. The reason I think generations is overhyped is also very simple, you can 100% it in one weekend and it isn't a multiplayer focused game.
Adventure DX has aged badly but the adventure games are solid games. More fun then Mario sunshine in my opinion.

I don't mean any offense towards TOVG or Matt from Tails Channel, I love these dudes, and they are entitled to any opinion they want. One thing I don't like is how they share their opinion as if its reality or factual, like we've been in this dark age for the past 23 years, waiting for some sort of sonic renaissance all these years. I hear this sort of thing all the time on Facebook, google, youtube, everywhere. "Sonic Mania killed Modern Sonic, Sonic Mania is the first good sonic game in decades, Sonic is finally back, Forces doesn't have a chance, Sonic Mania is the first good sonic game period"....y'all get the point. If you truly believe that, that's you, but lemme just say this, even if I did not like this franchise at all, and I was one of those people that only heard about the franchise, I would never say stuff like that, because it obviously would not have lasted this long and have such a lasting positive effect on so many people, if those comments were true. In my opinion, I think the only awful sonic games are Secret Rings, Boom, Free Riders, and Sonic R. Other than those I can say I have enjoyed every other Sonic game A LOT(even 06). I know Sega has made mistakes in the past, but when people continue to dwell on the few games that were bad, and call the whole franchise trash despite all the really good ones, isn't that kind of unfair? I think the reason Sonic gets so much blind hate for the most part, is because of how famous and popular the franchise is, even to this day. Its easy to poke fun at something well known and easily trigger people, but if you trash franchises like Banjo Kazooie, a lot people won't care, or probably won't even know what they're talking about(no offense to banjo kazooie fans). At the end of the day we all have our opinions and we should respect them, but not advertise them as fact, especially if you have bad support for your opinion. In the end, whether you love or hate sonic, if time is prolonged, he'll outlast us all.

for example unleashed introduce the day and night stage and many people hate the night stage
at first i dont enjoy but as i progress deeper into the game

It's not that the games various gimmicks were bad, just that they weren't fully fleshed out for the most part. Now, besides the daytime stages, the boost mechanic (both of these two were fleshed out over time), and the wisps, can you tell me of any sonic games where the gimmick was fleshed out? Werehog... I'd rather play Devil May Cry, God of War, or the Batman: Arkham series for more invigorating combat of a similar ilk. Sonic 06.... that was way better fleshed out in both Sonic Adventure and Sonic CD and the irony is not lost on me for that one. Sonic 4... I'll use the same argument as 06, I'd just replace Adventure with the classic genesis titles and leave Sonic CD right where it is.

You admitted that you enjoyed Sonic 06. That's kind of like saying "Yeah, the KKK is pretty alright, I think they do a lot of good" or "Yaknow, I'm happy to pay $60 for a game that doesn't physically work."
While you are entitled to that view, there are things that are outright wrong with those games. Secret rings and Black knight were waggle-tech pushers with no depth or replay value unless you were VERY young and didn't really know to play videogames yet.
. Sonic Boom and Sonic 06 were extremely broken and buggy. Even the Adventure series and heroes had flaws. Buggy releases and broken audio. Physics that came apart as soon as you start moving faster than a snails pace and in the case of sonic heroes, the levels had a very "Call of duty shooting range" feel, with small sections of "High speed" and then a large room where you would be forced to switch to power types and clear waves of enemies.
Generations was generally acceptable, but the boost mechanic just generally caused issues or allowed you to blow through areas that would have normally been interesting challenges.
There's a reason sonic has a bad rep. People wanted sonic to do what Sonic did when he won us over in the first place, instead of giving us games that have little to do with sonic mechanically and just slapping him on the front to use as a sales-pitch. Secret rings for example. There was no reason for that to be a sonic game. It could have been Nights and it wouldn't have changed anything.
All in all, what they're saying about those older games isn't as much of an opinion as it is an observation of the massive, glowing flaws that Sonic's lazy developers keep shoveling at us under the excuse of "Innovation" or even with no excuse at all.
New stages are AWESOME...

They aren't bad but they aren't outstanding either, they are just pretty meh
I love those games as much as anyone else, but when you think about it, they weren't amazing. The Tails/Eggman stages were bad, and the treasure hunt stages weren't good imo. The only really good parts were the Sonic/Shadow stages and the chao garden

I wish "3d fans" would stop getting angry every time someone says, quite honestly, that they are not great games. I'm the same age as sonic and I have watched the trend and understand everything about recent sonic frustrations. The short and sweet version: 2d sonic is the only stable version of sonic.
Sonic mania is brilliant, but more importantly it's a testament to sonics original consistency and direction. Everyone pretty much agrees on what they want and would like to see in 2d sonic, but you can't say the same about 3d sonic.

What he meant by "stable" is that there's a defined way of how to do a 2D Sonic game. When it comes to 3D Sonic games, there's no definitive way. There are a lot of 3D Sonic gameplay styles, and nobody can agree on what is the best.

And Advance 1-3, and that Adventure 1-2 have huge fanbases and Heroes got almost entirely positive reviews, and that a lot of people think the day stages in Unleashed were good.
There have only been 3½ bad sonic games in the last 23 years, and one of them wasn't by Sega (Boom) and two were on Genesis and Saturn (3D Blast and Sonic R, although I liked Sonic R Kappa).
FUN FACT: If you have Sonic Mania Plus getting all the gold medals will let you play the pinball bonus stage from Encore Mode in the main mode. Pretty neat! You can also get really good at that bonus stage making it relatively easy to max out the lives counter, just takes a lifetime.
