-- I recently purchased these three picks, I've had some time to use them and these are my thoughts. My personal favorite for my style of play and technique is the JP Flow 2mm pick, as it's an ideal size and the Ultex grip is awesome (it won't slip). The Andy James Flow pick is great too, but it's just a tad too large for my taste. The JP Jazz III is harder for me to grip and it's extra small size isn't ideal.
For the audio comparison section, I heard a much bigger difference while I was playing the guitar and could hear the picks hit the strings. But the audio recording you hear here, I can barely notice any difference. The only exception is the last demo, I believe you can definitely hear there are more highs / treble associated with the Jazz III compared to the Flow picks.
When you use the Jazz III pick and hear it hit the strings, compared to the Flow picks, you definitely hear a lot more highs, but that didn't translate well through my recordings. This may be based on my set up (Going in through a Kemper profiler).
Your thoughts?

they all sound the same
Great explanation man and I totally agree on the tortex 1.14 versus the flow and jazz picks. That is the reason I could not get used to the jazz and flow picks. I basically religiously use the tortex 1.14 for many years now. For heavy rythm I find the tortex awesome sounding. But by watching this I maybe should try different picks again
I work the black JP 1.4mm on my Les Paul and on my acoustics. I have been working on the red JP 2mm for a week now and I love it.
Good video. I could hear more Highs with the Jazz III but it comes down to if the pick doesn't feel good in your hands your not going to want to play your guitars.
CZcams audio often doesn't bring out the tonal differences between picks, especially with a distorted electric sound. I've tried both the JP Jazz III and the JP Flow; I'd like to try some of the standard Flows just to compare the grip. I actually prefer the JP Primetone Jazz III but they're a tad pricey in comparison.
Ah. Since recording this, I've switched to a regular Jazz III XL series 1.3mm pick. I was having a hard time getting a clean sound with the other thicker picks when it came to striking the strings. I'll give them another go shortly.
How did it go? Which are you now preferring? Thanks!
JP jazz 3 is a great feel . I always go from JP jazz 3 to the Paul Gilbert pick to the green Kirk Hammett pick ! But mostly the JP jazz3 because it feels so nice comfortable on the thumb and finger!
I tried the JP jazz and it was a tad small for me, I then discovered the ultex jazz iii XL....what a pick!!!!!
there is an interview where Guthrie Govan says he went from the standard red jazz III to the XL aswell
@@CarlosCepinha I'm in no way Guthrie Govan but I've switched from ultex jazz III XL to ultex jazz III standard. With that one I just find better control of the strings)
@timjenkins502 I just switched to Ultex Sharp 2.0 picks after trying about 10 or 12 Jazz III, Flow and Jazz III XL like picks... they're all a bit small for me, though I really like the taper on the Jazz III XL. There's something about how I control the pick that needs a bit more height to it.
@@SRHMusic012 Have you tried the new picks from Ernie Ball, Prodigy I think.
@@hawg427 Thanks - Yes, I have a set of the 'Standard' size here. They're almost straight edged compared to the Jazz III and Flow picks. They have a 'Mini' size, too, that has a more rounded taper.
What is the best pick for speed picking? I cant stand slippery shiny glossy picks at all. I got to be able to grip them real good.
I love my Andy James picks, that’s all I use. Now that I see the Petrucci one is very similar I’ll get a bunch of those too.
Have you found any picks you prefer over those yet? I still haven't found one I enjoy more than the Petrucci flow
Nice review.I know that ibby you use.If you afford change the bridge quantum to DM or SD pup .
The jazz is thinner and thus it makes sense that it gives more treble and high
It would have been cool to add the "Zenfire" Phat Jazz or Fusion picks to this review. I've tried tons of picks and I'm totally stuck on them, partly because of the grip pads .... but oOoH that tone!
Curious, how does playing with metal picks affect the longevity of your strings?
They do not adversely affect the longevity of the strings at all. My main electric, which I play (hard every day) has had the same set of Ernie Ball Cobalt 9's on it for over 3 years now with no breaks and they still sound crisp. I don't gig so I don't change strings unless I break one. I have to have a rigid, toneful pick with a dedicated grip or I just can't play. FYI, I'm the guy who makes the Zenfire Picks so I may be a bit bias but, this is the actual truth. There's better products out there than plastic picks if people care to investigate. I have customers tell me all the time that my picks are better than anything they have ever tried.
Is the jp 2.0 flow the same size as a regular 2.0 flow ?
Yes
Sorry. I'm a huge dunlop pick fan. I just can't choose. For me as long as its a dunlop it will always do the job. I use different kinds of dunlop.jazz iii series for soloing or shredding as they call it now a days and the rest for strumming or plucking.lol.
I think the treble issue is due to Ultex. I own one Ultex Jazz III 2.0 and clearly (during playing, not on record, as you said) the standard red Jazz III has more treble. Nice vid!
I haven't tried the ultex so much but, it feels like the nylon Jazz III gives more bite and treble?
@@Thadnill exactly
The flow pick seems to make a lot of noise when picking fast.
I have a question, do these picks ever get rounded at the edge?
yes, eventually they get rounded at the tip...but not as fast as tortex ones
The JP jazz pick is the most horrible pick I've ever used. Not only are they so small but there is zero grip on them.
Ultex chirp way too much. The chirp is almost as loud as the played note played. Ultex picks at 0.88 & below avoid it. That’s why I prefer Tortex & Gator grip Jazz III
I can tolerate the Jazz 3 xl version for some reason but generally I feel the same way. Ultex just adds a lot of unpleasant (to my ear) high end
wtf are you talking about? The JP Flow is slippery as hell and the JP Jazz Iii is grippy.
I've tried flow picks and the regular jp pick.
Flow picks have amazing grip dude!!
@@staystrongjoseph not the Petrucci version.
Depends on your skin type. The jp flow is mega grippy for me. I can’t keep hold of tortex, ulterior or gator grip they just slid out of my fingers. But glossy picks like delrin 500, fender picks I have no problem holding the stick to my fingers.
The tone you're using doesn't seem to favor a clearer sound comparison. Too much treble or something.
💀💀
The JP Jazz III is Nylon, not Ultex.
Nope. It’s Ultex, believe it or not.
Says ultex on the package
It’s Ultex bub

Your tone off the bat is terrible soi it's just 3 versions of terrible tone.
