Iceland is a highly volcanic island, but why is that? Geologist Dr Brooke Johnson explains why Iceland experiences so much volcanism, and what is behind the recent volcanic eruptions.

Love the concise explanation on the feedback loop. I didn't realize lava was so great at making itself. (Found your channel a few weeks ago and haven't been able to stop binging it. Thanks for making such quality videos!)

Glad you enjoyed it. The Earth system is full of feedback loops like this. It's probably mostly just feedback loops now that I think of it. 😅

what's your favourite theory as to why a plume exists under Iceland?
My favourite guess is that it is its own feedback loop simply because something between the core and the mantle is a sort of explanation without explaining anything
And what about bits of ancient Greenland stuck in the Icelandic landmass.. is that itch that is constantly being scratched?

I remember being told that this plume has existed since at least the Permian and was the cause for volcanism in the Oslo graben, and the Moray Firth. It only caused full rifting in the North Atlantic area because that was the weakest place in the old Iapetus suture.
That's assuming mantle plumes are real at all. *spooky music*
