The Land Has Reached a Critical Height Again - An Eruption Can Start At Any Time Now

  • Experts expect an eruption any time now since the land uplift has reached the same height as before the eruption on December 18th. It's still no signs of seismic unrest but the next eruption does not necessarily have to start with a strong seismic swarm. A few dozen families plan to stay in Grindavík over the New Year, but I suspect that it will not be allowed due to the new cracks in the road into town, and the nearby magma intrusion. However, we are hopeful that the new lava barriers can make the town habitable again.

I'm glad we have a voice from ground zero, as it were, instead of just scientists from the US or elsewhere. If I lived in Grindavik, I'd want to stay in my home for the new year, too, even if I had to evacuate shortly after. You always want to spend significant holidays in the places most meaningful to you.

Iceland is such a beautiful country and I am happy that the people in Grindavik have not lost their homes and may be able to remain there. The erupting lava against the landscape of ice and snow is spectacular - must be amazing to see in person. In 1980, I got to see one of the eruptions of the Mt. St. Helens volcano in Washington with my father in the USA - no lava; it was more like a mushroom cloud of ash. Unforgettable experience.

Mother nature is really active, apparently Reykjanes is heading towards a volcanic eruption every quarter or less. I hope the fissures always form north of Grindavik, far from from the city and from Svartseing and Blue Lagoon
Let's not forget that Fagradalsfjall is preparing for another eruption as well.
My biggest fear now is the Krisuvik system, taking into account that a giant dike has formed in Reykjanes, the same could happen in Krisuvik, putting Reykjavik at risk.

The building of berms to the North of Grindavik will be of no use if the lava was to erupt from underneath the town. Berms will be only able to divert or delay the overground flow of lava from eruptions North of this defence. To quote the Chinese philosopher/General, Sun Tzu, ‘it is best that a country has an army and no need to use it, than for a country to have no army and be in need of an army.’ It would be prudent to build this berm ASAP but people should realise the impossibility of defending against worst case scenarios.
