Why should we help Gondor? part3

- An interesting topic:
Even if someone hasn't been there for us (like, in this case, Gondor hasn't been there for Rohan), we should help him, if he is (or can potentially become) our ally, otherwise we are both doomed...

Imagine being one of the guys sitting there to light the beacon. They'd be like "Finally!!! My time to shine!!!!"
or, they've been up there so long they react, "huh, I wonder what that bright light over there is; it wasn't there yesterday" :-o :-D
The 2 first guys are probably fired though xD

I remember in college, my friends and I had an agreement. Anytime anyone needed 2 or 3 more people for help, we'd come running in like idiots and shout "Gondor calls for aid!" and the only agreed upon respond was "... and Rohan will answer!"
Love it!

I feel sorry to those who were tasked to light the first beacon. They had one job, but Pippin stole their glory.
Gondor's regent king wouldn't have had the sense to light them just on Gandalf's word. He might have lit the beacon when the enemy arrived and things became desperate, but that would've been disastrous. Gandalf made sure to get it lit, without his consent, as soon as possible.
Their boss (the regent) was too busy going crazy and getting ready to burn his living son to death on a funeral pyre to issue the order to light the beacons. So they weren't given the opportunity to do their true duty (light the beacon to call for aid in Gondor's hour of need) because their leader was too weak and too crazy to allow it. Pippin didn't steal their glory, the regent did.
@@woodrobin In the book, Denethor ordered the lighting of the beacons. Heck, he ordered it before Gandalf and Pippin showed up to Minas Tirith.
"......And Rohan will answer!" One of the best moments in the trilogy, imo. You can see Theodin weighing the possible fate of the world against the risk to his kingdom. The responsibility to those under him, against the responsibility to the world around him.
Yeah he s s nice man king 😊

I like how Theoden was all like why should we help gondor when they didn't help us??? But then when gondor was in trouble and actually called for aid (Theoden didn't know that it was actually gandalf and pippen that lit the beacon) he hardly hesitated before giving the order to ride to their aid.
That's a fairly true to life thing. We often say we're going to do one thing, but then when the moment comes and our mettle is tested, we decide differently. "Shit... I think I gotta do the right thing."
Also, Rohan's oath was to Gondor as a whole, not just to the current steward that had spurned Theoden's request.
That oath goes back further than either Theoden or Denethor and must be answered. Theoden's honor would demand no less.
I think it’s also partly due to his emotional connection with Aragorn. He knows that Aragorn stood by him in Rohan’s time of desperate need. He sees Aragorn run up those steps into the hall to desperately tell him about the signal fires. He knows Aragorn is the rightful king of Gondor as well as a loyal friend and that definitely factors into his decision to immediately send help.
If Rohan hadn't ridden to help Gondor, they would've become like the Undead army of the mountains, who abandoned their oath to Gondor.
Because he knows there are innocent people and children who s its not fault that the leaders decide not to help .
This less than 5 minutes clip is better than the entire final season of GoT.
1:55 the difference between normal version and extendend version. THAT MOMENT of the music.
It's not quite as satisfying
@@cynicalpenguin At all
@@cynicalpenguin What is the actual difference? Are you saying the extended is better or the original?
@@criert135 The top note in the theatrical version is an A whereas the extended version only reaches a G a tone lower. I don't know if its because I heard the original first and that became how it's meant to sound in my head but the extended version doesn't quite sound like it reaches its peak (no pun intended). Go listen to "The White Tree" from the 2:30 mark and compare
@Jim Harrington The original comment was specifically about the music.
One of the bad changes in the movies was the character of Denethor. In the books he was a cunning regent with a sharp strategic and political mind. He only opposed Gandalf for he assumed the wizard wanted to sieze political power for himself in the city of Minas Tirith. But he never made outright stupid decisions. When Gandalf arrived in Minas Tirith in the books the fires had already been lit in order to ask for Rohan's help. And he never ordered a suicide charge of several hundred riders. Instead the war council debated whether they should try to hold the outlying defences around the city or just abandon them and concentrate the forces for the defence of the city walls. For better or worse Denethor decided they should use all defences available to them and make the orcs pay for every meter they walk into Gondor. In hindsight it was a bad decision but at the time there were good arguments for both sides. And he never ordered his men to flee at the start of the battle. He had led the military campaign against Mordor for months while the fellowship had their little road trip. And he organized the city's defence very well. All civilians had been evacuated and forces from all over Gondor focused in the city.
I dont know why Peter Jackson decided to turn him into a madman in his movie.
Pretty Simple: They needed more PEEEJAYYYY CONFLICT! The books can be pretty dry at times, so they simply amped up any tendencies to insane levels. Thus Denathor.
I wouldn't call it a 'bad' change... Its not necessary for an adaptation to stick completely to the book... Filmmaking is a different process than books... Filmmakers have to condense a book in a 3 hour long movie and at the same time, make it appealing to worldwide audiences...
@@gauravw6947 I agree. They changed the character of Denethor, but the portrayal was a still a strong character. A man, devoid of hope, broken b the death of his favorite son, thinking the enemy had already won, abandons all reason. It spoke of a civilization that was in decline because they were wrapped up in tradition and their own mythos (supported by the extended addition scene about the decline of gondor; where lords knew the names of their ancestors better than the names of their sons, and the halls of the dead had more splendor than the halls of the living.) Denethor supported this characterization wonderfully. It's not that there was no courage in the kingdoms of men, it's that there was no hope.
Also, he'd been using the palantir, which means that Sauron had been fucking with his head. That's how he knew about Aragorn.
you are right, but it's not that easy to stick with books you know. if you do so, you will need more run-time, money ETC.
Why Denethor didn't want to call Rohirrims?

me too a great climax of this scene
I just about stood up in my seat and yelled when this scene came on.
Everyone, even Legolas, looks at Aragorn like he just $### in the punch bowl when he bursts in like that.
Someone had an italian version up and Theoden answers "E Rohan respondere." Say it with thickly trilled r's to get the effect.
Best dialog in the whole trilogy: "We cannot defeat the forces of Mordor." "No, we cannot, but we shall meet them in battle nonetheless." Because that's what free men do.

Almost tear up. Powerful lines being spoken, even tho Theoden was being petty about it in the beginning.

Imagine how easy this would have been if they had WhatsApp or SMS messaging. "Theoden m8, send help pls. But don't tell Denethor lol".

Great three-part sequence. Kudos and thanks.
Muster the Rohirrim!
a prelude to a great scene....... and totally made up for the movie.... the music, the vieuws, great drama without actors only for the landscape itself and then the pause before Theoden answers and connects it all back to Minas Tirith.
when rereading LotR I only found that the bbeacons were already lit while Gandalf and Pippin were still racing to Minas Tirith and PJ replaced the arrival of the canonical Red Arrow with this splendid scene. This how one captures the essence of the story and brings it to glory.
Theoden is such a noble king. Gondor fails to help him but he will still help Gondor. Rohan is so badass.
Aragorn stood by the men defending Helm's deep. So in a way, Gondor did come to the aid of Rohan.

“And Rohan Shall answer... and our answer is no”.
There's a lot of compression from the book going on here, combining the Beacons with the delivery of the Red Arrow. I'll never forget how, in the book, the journey east by Gandalf & Pippin passing the lit Beacons is mirrored a few chapters later by Theoden leading his army along the same road, passing those same Beacons (now darkened) and finding the body of the messenger with the Red Arrow. It was chilling.
That’s a great creative scene

I’ve always wondered how these ppl were able to live on mountain tops
Good job it wasn’t raining.
Those were some really huge fires....
So…..Saruman couldn’t conjure up a little cloud cover?
something that always bugged me in this great visual scene is that why if sauron feared the remainders of the human kingdoms uniting (as stated by gandalf in the previous scene) he didn't cut their communications? how hard could it have been to have the nazgul fly to a couple of those outposts and kill whoever is in charge of lighting the damn fire.
@Tấn Nguyễn Considering how short those pikes were in the movie, it wouldn't have done much. Sure maybe the first line of horses would die, but when their pikes were only like 6ft long, the momentum from a charging horse is still gonna carry it through the guy with the pike. There is a reason most pikes in history were closer to 15-20ft long, and that's cause you want some space between you and the horse for it's momentum to go away before it falls dead.
Hollywood Plot Armor.
Same reason the Witch King didn’t just fly around wreaking the Rohirm when they arrived, I mean, he had just broken Gandalf, and he needed to do was do a handful of fly by’s wreaking havoc on Rohan and the day was won.

Why Gandalf started that chain of fire from Gondor? He can simply take Pippin to the closest one of the beacons and burn it so chain would be much smaller. Theoden would still thought Gondor was calling lol. They would come to the battle much sooner.
Not really. Keep in mind that Gandalf didn't know they'd need to call Theoden right away when he left Edoras. He and Pippen went to Minas Tirith to take the heat off of Frodo.
Remember that Gondor and Rohan are on opposite sides of the White Mountains. There were no passes through the mountains, barring a few foot paths and the Paths of the Dead. They would either have to go into the mountains, which would take days, or around through the Gap of Rohan, which would take longer. The fastest method really was to use the beacon in Minas Tirith
as if those in the middle could light them up so fast.
In the books the beacons were on tall hills not at the top of mountains which kinda makes more sense

The beacons are only for Gondor and Rohan?
So it is not possible to lit the wrong beacon by accident?
Don't they have contingency plans, for when somebody accidentally lights up the beacon or something, like a false alarm signal?
