      Such an amazing quote on it's own, but awe striking when put into the context of the rest of Tolkien's quotes. A quote that was exempted from the movies that Gandalf also stated, “Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.” This was in reference to Frodo stating that Gollum deserved to die. Remember that in the end, it was Gollum that made the ring fall into Mt. Doom.
      When you put these quotes together, you get the moral that you only have to simply rely on the fact that evil is self-destructing, and that good people only need to reach that point by doing what good they can do along the way. Add on top of that the quote about how it takes courage to spare a life rather than take one, and you have quite the lesson.

Every time I go back and watch them I find something new I've missed, and realize some of the "Dumb and boring" parts I disliked when I was younger sometimes carry a real strong message that doesn't just change how you look at the movie, but how you look at yourself.

      Goldhelmriel mae govannen, mellon. I am truly sorry to hear of your Grandma's passing, and I know I cannot share or take away your pain, but just think of this: right now, your Grandma is in the Undying Lands, beyond the Grey Havens. At this moment, she is feasting and talking with Mithrandir, Galadriel, Bilbo and Frodo. She is no longer in pain, in fear, or in any suffering. She watches over you and all the other beings and places she loved in this life, and she waits for you and all of her loved ones to one day join her, so that you may once again be together. And for me, reading that passage of Tolkien to her as she passed... That is one of the nicest and most touching ways to pass on I can imagine. #3 Might be my favourite. It is the scene that shows why Gandalf would never be corrupted by Sauron, while Saruman, supposedly the wisest of the 5 Istari, can fall to temptation. Gandalf doesn't care about power; he cares about kindness.

    • @erikblaas5826

      Why have you given me the body of an old man, I feel so tired.
      ( maybe not the exact words, but this is how I remember it )
      That was exact the moment where I felt the true nature of Gandalf, his power before the journey from the undying land to middle earth. The restrictions put upon him, his doubth of finishing his task. But there was also the hint of his current power, the power of a bit of foresight, to see the things that needs to be done and to guide and encourage the people who needed to do those things.

    • @robstvn
      @robstvn Před rokem +5

      On the contrary, Gandalf could have also been corrupted, and that's part of what makes him a great character. For what sense is there in having a character that can't be affected or vulnerable? It is because Gandalf was vulnerable that he was a pillar of strength for the fellowship.

    • @Raptor747
      @Raptor747 Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@robstvn It's not quite his vulnerability and the great respect he has for that flaw of his (and thus takes great care to avoid temptation or overconfidence) that makes him a pillar of strength for the Fellowship, but that he encourages and inspires others while constantly acknowledging his own limitations and weaknesses. For example, he never once takes possession of the One Ring, and in fact repeatedly insists that he must not carry it ever, for any reason. He knows that he is corruptible and refuses to think otherwise or even take the risk. And partly because of that, he relies on others--others that are weaker than him and far less knowledgeable than him--and appreciates and values them because of it.
      Gandalf is strong and wise because he steadfastly remembers the limits of his own strength and wisdom. He relies on the strength and wisdom of others, and appreciates their strength and wisdom all the more because they are mundane mortals. It is he, and he alone, that recognizes from the start that hobbits are extraordinary in their strength of character--that they can resist the corruption and temptation of the One Ring better than literally any other beings BECAUSE they are so much "lesser" than Maiar like himself and content with that fact.

    I can’t believe it has taken me so long to realize the symbolism behind Gandalf and the Hobbits. You see, these are the two versions of good: holy goodness and mundane goodness. Gandalf is the parallel for an angel (if I had to guess Michael is the most appropriate, but that is irrelevant here). The wisdom he imparts, the actions he takes, and the effects he has are all beyond that of a normal person. They are grand visions of goodness, so much so that they almost seem alien, and beyond mortals. There is no failure in it, and it is perfect in its dogma. The wisdom of the hobbits is much more practical and simple. It is rooted in the understanding that suffering and error is the nature of life. An angel knows not the hardships of mortals. Even at his lowest, Gandalf was never in mortal danger, because the very essence of who he is is tied to Eru Iluvatar and the Great Song. But in that mortal frailty comes something entirely different: resilience, courage, and determination. This is why a Maiar could not fell Sauron.
    To summarize the moral lesson of Lord of the Rings: Godly Good can never be triumphed over, but the defeat of evil will only come from the hands of normal people who endure it’s wrath.

    "Fool of a Took! Throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity" that´s the best quote XD

    Thank you so much for this performance sir Ian McKellan, absolutely made the role his own while injecting so much life, compassion, wisdom, and badassry into one.

    Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Because it humbles us and pride is root of most sin. I loved how humbly Ian Mckellan played Gandalf.
