    In the book Bilbo won on a lucky accident. With the time riddle, Gollum was about to call himself the winner, and Bilbo, wanting more time to think, simply burst out "time" in a panic, to which Gollum got angry at him saying the correct answer, and Bilbo just went along with it

      I like how they changed that in the film but it's still Gollum's fault for trying to eat Bilbo. In the book it's made clear that it was Gollum's pressure what made Bilbo say simply "time" and here it is him saying "time's up".

      @@h20deliriousvr19 Gollum freaking out like that is almost similar to a schizophrenic child i remember working with years ago, his babysitter used to let him watch alot of horror movies, and therefore he grew a fascination for werewolves, so much so that it influenced his behavior in a negative way, whenever he got pissed off or someone got him mad he would suddenly start spurting out "He's a werewolf! He's a werewolf!" This meant in his mind he was becoming a werewolf and was a precursor that he was about to go apeshit on someone. Suffice to say Gollum could very well classify as a schizophrenic patient in my eyes.

    In the books that was literally a horror scene, it was terrifying. In the movie they made it a little more funny but kept the tension, which is very good to ease the situation and then make a boom when Gollum realises he's been stolen his Precious.

      Well interestingly enough originally it wasn’t, it was a sort of like the movie’s scene. It was actually a scene where bilbo beats Gollum at riddles and then Gollum gives him the ring as a reward, but then he wrote lord of the rings and re-wrote this scene entirely for the re-release that coincided the lord of the rings release so it would be more in line with those stories.

    0:16 I love how genuinely happy Smeagol looked when Bilbo said he wanted to play. He's been alone in the Misty Mountains for 500 years and finally a real person comes along who's actually being kind to him and wants to do some riddles. And yeah, he also wants to eat him, but at least it’s the closest thing he’s had to a friend since he found the Ring.

      I recently started reading the Fellowship of the Ring and gandalf makes such a heartbreaking point about this moment. Since Smeagol was not much different from a hobbit once, those riddles connected him with a tradition and a culture that he knew. That this little part of him was still there, hiding from the ring.

      Matthew 11:15 KJV
      He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
      Are you saved? Where will you go when you die? Heaven or hell?
      The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. Although God's creation was created perfect, having no death, sickness and disease, the creation became corrupted through Adam and Eve in them disobeying God. In this rebellion the creation became fallen through the curse of sin and mankind became separated from God. This world is fallen, but God offers reconciliation to him through his provision at the cross. Ultimately God will restore his creation to perfection when he returns but those that who reject his offer of redemption will remain condemned by their sins and go to hell.
      John 1:1,14 KJV
      In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. [14] And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us,
      1 John 3:8 KJV
      He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
      Isaiah 9:6 KJV
      For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty GOD, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
      John 1:10 KJV

    Fun fact: In Middle-Earth lore, some of the oldest and most popular riddles were made up by the elves, who actually put some magic into them which made you forget the answer after a while, so the riddle could be asked time and time again. It's no coincidence that the riddles in "the Hobbit" were universally poems, they're more akin to magic formulas than trick questions from a lore perspective.

    • @abigail_yang
      @abigail_yang Před 3 lety +58

      It makes him look more innocent than Gollum; between the two, Gollum is more conniving, sly, and overall unpleasant. Narrowed eyes often give people that impression, especially if the narrowing is obviously intentional. ‘Innocent’ figures in media like television and cinema often have dilated pupils or eyes in general, to make them seem more adorable/relatable/pitiable. Sméagol is the more trusting of the two, with a better nature, and the dilation of his pupils underlines that. We feel sorry for Sméagol and his predicament, and we can feel that more clearly when contrasting him to Gollum.

    • @abigail_yang
      @abigail_yang Před 2 lety +6

      @Johnt Schmichal I did not say that I believed Sméagol to be innocent. You’re only proving my point, as was the point of the character. Feeling bad for him was intended, and no matter the character trait, the intention was so, as produced by Tolkien’s hand and the film. The special effects of the film make him seem that way, to lure the viewer into a false sense of security, as Frodo was, in a way. The contrast is a distraction; the obvious ill-intent of Gollum is a diversion, so the two, with the same ultimate goals, may achieve them, most notably, acquiring the One Ring. Also, there is only evidence that Sméagol was corrupted by the Ring, as he did evil, as we saw, only after seeing it. I know not of solid proof to show that Sméagol was evil before encountering the One Ring.

    I know the Hobbit films aren’t very good on average, but this first film honestly came a lot closer than the others to capturing the charm of the book. I think this scene is genuinely a great adaptation, just two great actors being allowed to just act out the excellent interactions between Bilbo and Gollum. I know they lit the scene to display the incredible job they did with the animation and Serkis' acting... But just to see what it would've been like, I watched this scene with the brightness WAY down, to the point where it was difficult to see more than very dark glimpses and close facial zooms. Gollum feels MUCH more intimidating when you feel like he is capable of moving around in the darkness with ease while Bilbo should be struggling to see at all. If you've ever been in a cave you know that ANY light is honestly unrealistic, but even the book describes Bilbo as being able to see the green glint in Gollum's eyes. I felt that a tiny bit of light, just enough to where it is still pretty difficult to make out what you're seeing on screen during this scene, felt the most like I remember imagining when I first read the book.
