    I disagree about Barbossa. The biggest saving grace of the 4th film, was finding out halfway through that Barbossa was only using the Royal Navy because they had the adequate resources for him to chase down and eventually kill Blackbeard. His final scene with him back in his old outfit along with his natural personality, is a great pay-off.
    Now in 5, the movie implies that Barbossa has decided that he actually somewhat enjoyed playing "good", and has gone back to wearing and acting like something resembling a commissioned officer. His softened personality and outward appearance only made him come across as weak and unrecognisable from earlier films. The movie didn't have to go to these lengths just to prove that the guy has newfound feelings.

      It also makes no sense that Carina is his daughter. Jack says they knew her mother back in the day, before Barbossa’s mutiny. When Barbossa turns on Jack, Jack goes for 13 years before he gets the ship back in 1728, and Barbossa was trying to collect all the cursed Aztec gold in between.
      This movie is set in 1751. That’s 36 years. Carina was supposedly born in 1732, meaning she’s 19. How exactly does that even work?

    The thing that annoyed me the most during the movie is how underused the _Flying Dutchman_ was. It only served as the plot for Henry's determination.
    Keep in mind, it was a ship used for *ferrying the dead to the afterlife.* Salazar and his crew are undead, meaning that the _Dutchman_ had to get involved somehow. But nope, it wasn't.

    What annoys me about the retcon with Jack’s compass is that it didn’t need to happen. Just make it so he already secretly had this magic device that he never really got to use before because of his low rank on the crew, then after Salazar kills Jack’s captain, Jack finally gets to use that compass properly. As the scene is, it just feels like the movie came down with a case of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and pointlessly felt the need to show the origin of the main character’s every component.

  • @ninclow5421

    I always felt like the story would almost have been better if Henry remained an eleven, twelve year old boy who found Jack after stowing away on ships and being resourceful, and Jack initially decided to at the very least see this little inconvinience home safely as a favor to Elizabeth, until he produced some kind of clue that persauded Jack that all right, so maybe the trident of Poseidon aren't all myth; so he tells Gibbs to "hide the rum" and tells the lad with the exaggerated grin that you know what, boy, we might be able to help your father after all, as they were going to take a detour. Shenanigans ensue.
    Just the idea of a Jack Sparrow transitioning from something akin to a reluctant babysitter to a funny uncle for twelve year old Henry as Will and Elizabeth's son grows on him sounds really wholesome to me, as Henry proves to be quick-witted and resourceful, and might use the fact that he is a child to get into a place no adult civilian, let alone pirate, could simply walk through the door by claiming one of the red-coats guarding it was his father, and steal something Jack needs. Sort of like when Mullroy and Murtogg starts bickering, and Jack looks from one to the other with a "oh my god, these two..." look, only this time it is Henry who looks between Jack and Gibbs as they quibble about the best way to get inside this area, and though they freak out a bit when they find Henry gone, once he shows up again, with what Jack needs for the journey, Jack can acknowledge his wit and take him on as a cabin boy for the remainder of the voyage, and stops walking on eggshells around him because he is capable, and not simply little "Will's boy" or "Elizabeth's son".

I feel like with how much he's grown into a late teens early twenty's character, Jack should've looked older. But no, he just looked completely the same, despite perhaps 20 years passing. I can buy will not looking older since maybe the curse kept him in the state he was in when he stabbed the heart, but it felt weird that Jack looked the same.

      also since elizabeth's the pirate king, will's the flying dutchman captain, just how much of a pirate royalty henry turner must be. he should be BREATHING sea and adrenaline, a young prodigy always on adventure. it would've been a nice transition from the first trilogy to another set of films centering around henry and his team with occasional cameo of jack sparrow and barbossa as "cool uncles". it would save old characters legacy and pave the road for new actors and new stories.

    This was the first pirates movie I got to see in cinema, and as a major fan, I was HEAVILY disappointed. Besides Jack, this was the thing that annoyed me most of all;
    -The wicked wench was never a pirate ship. Jack captained it for the company under the command of Lord Cutler Beckett. After disobeying Beckett's orders, and setting free the 'cargo' i.e. African slaves. Jack gets imprisoned and the Wench gets set on fire. Jack escapes and tries to save the ship in a desperate attempt. Jack goes down with his ship and calls upon Davy Jones to save him and the ship which he renames 'The Black Pearl'. Jack then strikes the 13 year deal with Davy Jones. This is literally the most important piece of backstory for films 2 & 3 and can be found in a canon novel 'The price of freedom' released by DISNEY.

    Gosh I was such a huge fan too. I don't think it was just Jack. You are right about the other characters just being a step up but everything just felt to meh, regardless of Jack being who he is or not. This movie broke the continuity both within itself and within the entire franchise as a whole, not only with the compass but the wicked wench, the Brethren court, and the love story between William Turner and Elizabeth Swann. Okay, so Turner is cursed now. Forget that he is supposed to be the Foyle of Davy Jones because his love actually worked out with Elizabeth. So what about Henry? I just didn't feel the same fire from Henry like what will had for his father bootstrap bill, throughout the movie, although both five and two had equally as emotional scenes between the Fathers and Sons establishing the race to set the fathers free. Carina Smith's story is a very interesting story that they could have done so much with, but it just boiled down to "oh my gosh she's a witch because women can't be smart", which plays into the other issue of the side characters being too bland or generic mwahahaha villains. There just wasn't the same passion with the extras and Side characters as it was in the previous movies where everything felt visceral and real. I mean, apart from the fact that we'll probably never get entire Crews to build entire warehouses of designs to film an epic battle in a maelstrom, or asking a bunch of diverse ethnic people from around the world to film a scene in a cannibal island or an army from Spain or a fight sequence in Singapore ever again. You cannot expect me to believe the extras and side characters, when you have an actual real witch, who blatantly tells you that carina isn't a witch, and they just blow her off even though they look nothing alike. Yes, people were ignorant back then, but were they really that ignorant? Or is there some kind of message that the writers and directors were trying to tell? I guess that's just it. If there was another issue than Jack Sparrow, it would be the massive continuity errors and the fact that everything in this movie is just amazing potential that goes nowhere and is wasted due to poor writing and lack of passion. I mean, just look at how they treat their Supernatural macguffins ! Barbosa has the freaking sword of Triton , but seems to have forgotten about it until he needs to bring the Pearl back conveniently. And who knows what happened to the Queen Anne's Revenge, a ship with plenty of broadside and cannons that can spit fire that burns underwater. And nobody has the same kind of reverence for the Black Pearl apart from a few people cheering that she's back. This is the ship that took on the Flying Dutchman, and joined her to destroy the Endeavor. This is the ship that struck fear for 10 years and earned its reputation as a Supernatural ghost ship, so much so that Blackbeard kept it as one of his prized possessions. And she's just use as a cheap convenient tool for a Epic ship race, in which she already lost to a battleship and a dinghy. They put so much effort with the symbolisms of each of their vessels in the previous films. Like how the Black Pearl is a symbol of freedom and Speedy flight, while the Flying Dutchman and subsequently the Queen Anne's Revenge are symbolisms of bondage through death and / or fear. And what about Gibbs? Are we forgetting that he literally has a supernatural map memorized in his head? Yet like every other side character and extra, he is just as oblivious to how on Earth they are going to be able to find some mysterious island with the Trident, which no one else can find after everything he has been through and knowing what is inside his head. All of this turned me off from the franchise because I know now that they are running out of ideas because of how much they wasted with this fifth movie, and it's very unlikely that we'll have the same impactful adventurous experience with any future films like we did with the first three and even 4

    I liked Pirates 5 just as much as the others before it. You said Jack's character was butchered, but I don't agree. To me, it feels normal for his character to change over time, as is normal with a human being. And the way his character has changed makes sense, given that he was supposedly a heavily drinking pirate, and you cannot expect his brain to remain the same over the years, given this and his life experiences. You should not expect a character to remain linear in the course of more than a decade. It's like expecting someone to be just the same at 25 and at 45. It doesn't make sense. So therefore, I believe the change in Jack's character is normal. Also, Salazar's character was very good in my opinion. Henry's was pretty decent. Barbossa was excellent indeed, but his character has evolved as well, as was expected to happen over the course of the years. There's much more to add here but I'll leave it at that. I personally enjoyed the 5th movie just as much as the others. Maybe a bit more than the 4th, because of the story and the characters. I liked Salazar more than Blackbeard.

      Specifically regarding Jack, no. Just, no. Time passing is not a excuse for Jack acting as inconsistent as he does when compared to the other films. If On Stranger Tides could keep things consistent with Jack's character when it has a time-skip, Dead Man Tell No Tales had no reason not to. Then again that just brings up another issue with the film regarding how despiste 19 years passing since At World's End, Jack, Gibbs, the crew and Barbossa look around the same age.

    I agree with that scene showing a younger Jack and when he got Salazar killed, that retcon pissed me off. But ive seen theories that people say since Tia Dalma never states WHEN Jack bartered the conpass off her, he may have offered it as tribute to his old captain when he joined the Wicked Wench crew, not knowing what it was. Very unlikely as its more likely they just forgot their own story and lore, but would be interesting to say the least. As at the time of giving up the compass to his old captain as tribute, he may have not had a "greatest fear" that it could awake

    Barbossa's development doesn't make any sense. In the 1st film he's REALLY violent, mainly towards Elizabeth. At the end of DMC, he magically reapears to save the day. And somehow he's now cooperating with people who were his enemies before his death? Ok lmao... Then obviously he doesn't become friends with Jack and sails away with the Pearl. Why does Jack's crew betray him btw? Whatever. Then in OST, he becomes quite cruel again, letting the royal navy's get sunk by the mermaids for example. My problem with Barbossa as a captain in general is that while he is a great leader, he doesn't give 2 fcks about his crew members, so it doesn't make sense to me that someone is loyal to him at all. In the 5th film this happens again - he lets the dead absolutely slaughter his crew... But on the other hand he kinda becomes good, saves Jack and shows love towards his long lost daughter and sacrifices himself for her... Seriously Barbossa's development makes ZERO sense :(((
    *also at the end of AWE, how is it that Jack lets Barbossa sail away with the Pearl😭😭😭 that's SO frustrating i hate it

Obviously, he has to be given the proper send-off. He needs to die with honour and he needs to have a good reason to die via sacrificing himself or something. He also needs to sink with his beloved Black Pearl. Jack can go out in the way he would want and he will achieve the immortality he always wanted - the immortality of a legend.

It's like 4 and 5 didn't happen in the same universe. They don't even mention the events of 4 in 5 if I remember properly, and it's just dumb. Then something about the Trident of Poseidon maguffin can be worked in somehow. Also keep Phillip Swift, the mermaid and Angelica. Still introduce Carina. Bish bash bosh, you got an ok 5th film in the franchise.

I agree with you I don’t like the fifth film but I think they could’ve taken what they did with the fourth film and expand up on it because I’d like to know what happened to Angelica I know there’s a post credit scene, but I’d like to elaborate more into the character. I thought Angelica was an awesome character, and they could’ve followed up on her sorrows on the sequel to the fourth one, which would’ve been the fifth one, and then they could’ve made a like a new trilogy with a sixth one, but I wouldn’t place any bets on the sixth movie if we’ve seen Hollywood recently, we know the sixth one is gonna suck. If it was 4 th movie , if poseidon was ever mentioned before ( like why was there even a poseidon s trident if calypso was the goddess of sea ? ) , if barbossa would ever mention that he had a daughter or family at least , if there was any look into jack s backstory before . But because there wasnt any of that we ended up with typical " new final movie " of the series where suddenly it turns out that all the main characters we spend entire series with had all these new important things or biggest enemies we never heard before . I was also wondering if salazar would be able to get rid of his curse with the trident wouldnt it be the same for davy jones , if so why wasnt he looking for the trident ?

    The biggest issue, i think, is the pacing. This movie felt like two movies smashed into one. The best part about the franchise is the movies take their time. This movie couldve been great even with the terrible writing for Jack, if the made two movies. It was rushed, there were things that weren't explained because they didnt have time quite honestly, and it all came across as just cheesy, i think, because of it. With more time they couldve had an arch where Jack actually got back to being classic Jack (kind of like character growth). It like the first half of the movie was good, but they just couldn't close it out.

  • @michaelfraser1073
    @michaelfraser1073 Před 11 dny

    I think you're wrong: Jack isn't the only character ruined. There's an awful lot about this movie I despise when it comes to Will Turner. First of all, I really don't understand why he appears all monster-ified in the opening. My reading of the original trilogy is that Jones' monstrous appearance was due to him corrupting the original purpose of the Dutchman: a physical manifestation of the ship fighting how he was commanding it, not merely being the captain of the Dutchman. Hence why the crew return to being human once Jones is defeated, and why Will appears like human in the post-credit scene of AWE (which also raises why he didn't get monsterified in ten years aboard the Dutchman but then did two years after that).
    The second is the Dutchman itself. It's made explicitly clear in At World's End that the Dutchman must have a captain because it is the ferry for the dead. It's not a cursed ship that binds its captain by magic, it's a part of the natural life-cycle of the world. The captain of the Dutchman is very akin to the Greek mythical figure of Charon: he holds the responsibility to guide the dead to the afterlife. This is why the Dutchman must always a captain, and why Jones not doing the proper role is so dangerous. This also raises the question of what happens now that Will is no longer captain of the Dutchman.
    The third is admittedly minor, but it does bother me how Poisedon is mentioned in this movie. Wasn't Calypso the goddess of the sea? How are there two gods of the sea, and where is Poesidon? Why does he not care about his trident? Why are pirates, especially those who interacted with Calypso, not questioning this? It may sound like a tiny detail but it bothers me since that is how Will gets freed.
    The fourth is about the ending. At World's End made a clear effort to bring Will and Elizabeth's story to an end, even featuring a 'x years later' flashforward common to the ending of TV shows and some films. Heck, the last shot before the credits in At World's End features Jack literally sailing toward a sunset. Yes, it was tragic that Will and Elizabeth didn't get their happily ever after, but not everyone does. And they undid it all just to try and tempt fans back to these movies.
    Regarding Jack, I have to say I really despise him not knowing about Henry. I despise the implication that he never bothered to check up on Elizabeth in the years since the battle of the Malestrom. You'd also think he'd have more of a reaction to Will being back.
    Honestly, I agree with you about the more movies thing. I don't want another installment of this franchise that has clearly run out of road. I'd much rather we get different movies about pirates that utilise the model of POTC, understanding what made these movies great.

    A question about Salazzar. Is he really a villain? All his life been was hunting down pirates. He never killed a man other than pirates. Are not the pirates suppose to be the bad guys? We literally saw Jack and his crew robbing a freaking bank. Did u see what happened in the first pirate movie when Barbossa attacked Royal Marines when his crew terrorised the place and u saw a crying kid calling for his mother that is villainous and even Jack is sometimes a villain coz he first was to fight Will and stealing stuff and all he wants is his ship back and he sometimes rude to Mr Gibbs and others. Salazzar is just a loyal captain that hunting down bad pirates and the only time he is a villain is when he now undead he kill the men that got trapped in Devils Triangle but to be fair those men were idiots, Henry tried to warn them but ofc they didn't listen and they doomed themselves. But I just can't see Salazzar as a villain coz all he wanted was a to revenge on Jack for what he did to him. Pirates are suppose to be the bad guys coz they are scavangers, thief, stealing treasure, banks and killing men if they had too. Salazzar is all about justice. I think he looked really cool too and his passion for killing Jack is what made him as a villain but still Salazzar I think is misunderstood. Sure he was rude when he didnt spare the pirates that was floating but who knows how many bad deeds those pirates done to other who fell the same way.

    I am writing a second comment because your comments about Blackbeard in the fourth movie is so dumb. If you paid attention to the movie, you will know why Blackbeard was so interested in the fountain of youth and believed the prophecy. He is written as a coward. A coward who only puts himself first. He has no interest in anything else but himself. But yes, insult one of the best villains ever just because you can't be bothered to pay attention to a movie.
