    Dumb question - I wasn’t alive yet in 88 but love watching these old races. Can someone explain to me how/why the cup cars sound so much more...’menacing’ is a word...back then, than they do now? It’s not too horrible of a difference like F1 v10s sounding infinitely better than the current platform, but these older cup cars do seem to have a deeper/fuller sound than the current cars

    • @brianbooher7318
      @brianbooher7318 Před 3 lety +8

      Because in 88 you had probly 30 engine builders pushing everthing they could get out of a engine .they were pushing the envelope to the edge.now you have 3 guys building all the engines an in next 5 years they will all be built by same guy ever car will run nascars spec engine.the cars today are not pushed to the edge thats why you see no blowed engines.they should take the rev limit limitor off .people like Kyle Bush would have never won in this era you had to take care of your car back then or it wouldn't last now days the driver gets in holds it wide open an don't have to worry about nuthi g except that dady has enuff money to buy them a ride

    • @cnking27
      @cnking27 Před 2 lety +1

      Like Booher said, over time the teams with the same manufacturers started working together on engines, and eventually the engines were made and distributed to the teams by the manufacturers. They've also made more and more changes (starting with the restrictor plates) to reduce flow, to cut power and keep speeds down, and the idling sounds a lot different because they were using mechanical timing back then, the ECU makes it idle higher & smoother to protect the engine. Other than that, the basic engine geometry and everything is the same as it was in the 80s, that's why they don't sound as different as F1 cars from back then. I also think the sound engineering on the broadcasts now takes away a lot of the growl of the engines because in person they don't seem nearly as tame as they do on TV.

    It is interesting that by 1988, GM had introduced the new W-body design in their Oldsmobile (Cutlass), Pontiac (Grand Prix) and Buick (Regal) lines, but stuck with the older Monte Carlo for another year under the Chevrolet brand before the Lumina went into production.
