As a NZ'er living in Melbourne at that time I went to the second race day at the thunderdome ' it was an awesome experience 'and it was the only time I saw Peter Brock racing 'he was driving an xf falcon that burst a radiator hose and that caused him lose traction and have a big slide out 'he got it under control of course. I was amazed to find out that this track ended up defunct after all the effort and money put into creating it.

Fond memories going here as a kid in the early to mid 90's, my dad use to take me to see Nascar and my dads friend use to race top fuel drag bikes for Penzoil being the first to break 6 seconds, we use to watch him race frequently and ride mini bikes around in the pit crew areas, great times. Shame what happened to it, Calder Park is a mess now, in complete disarray.

Fast little track, I like it, coming out of turn 4 the suspension loads hard. Allison would have a career ending crash shortly after this, and Bonnet was killed a few years later, both great drivers. Nice to see the battle flag fyin' in Oz too. Nice upload mate, good onya!

That safety car and the pit crews in jeans, t shirts and sneakers!!!! Pity they didn't show the view from Grice's car going into the crash. It would have been frightening. I went to the Thunderdome in August and December of 88 and am appalled to find out it is abandoned and falling apart. Watching this upload just made me smile. I can remember the noise and the smell. It was really something. Thanks for the upload. Any more?

@@downnice95not exactly viable .. USA has tracks in every state nearly and many ties of oval racing .. even if thunderdome hosted 1 NASCAR race a year it wouldnt come close to viable. No NASCAR track in the US could survive if it was the only track .. it only works there because they are part of a circuit for many diff tiers of racing. As much as I love the idea of going to see a NASCAR race here even if U had a good track in every state you still couldn't support oval racing on Aussie . Far too low population to bring in enough money

Went to the track a week ago to watch a drag race next to it and we had to park our car in the infield. It closed down back in 2001 and it isn’t looking too good. Section of seating are missing, half of the Goodyear billboard has collapsed and all the grass on the infield is very overgrown. Hope the track can be bought and fixed up.
