    Modern Who is tame compared with this era, just look at the Master with his skin all burned and dropping off, that eyeball too. You just wouldn't see things of that nature now which shows just how much it's changed.

      Indeed. Jodie’s Doctor would never be given a fight scene like this. Her triumphant battle in the Matrix was much more in style.

    "[The Deadly Assassin] programme contains some of the sickest and most horrific material ever seen on children’s television, but no-one has to take my word that such material is likely to disturb. For young children, even a week may be too long to wait for reassurance that the characters with whom they identify are safe. Doctor Who has turned into tea-time brutality for tots. My personal reaction to the sight of the Doctor being viciously throttled underwater is unimportant. What’s important is the effect of such material - especially in a modern setting - upon the very young children still likely to be watching. Strangulation - by hand, by claw, by obscene vegetable matter - is the latest gimmick, sufficiently close-up so that they get the point. And, just for a little variety, show the children how to make a Molotov cocktail."

    • @jetstream222
      @jetstream222 Před 4 lety +3

      I think that’s part of the issue...
      They’re a great addition and plot device but many writers also see then as a limiting one. One showrunner out of three saw fit to barely bring them back.
      The 2005 season finale, the Doomsday plotline in the season 2 finale, season 3 finale, season 4 reality-bomb finale, season 5 finale, wouldn’t really have been possible if the TimeLords were present.
      In a way they’re victims of their own “success”.
      Far too handy not to be brought back of course, but sparingly.

    It's strange. Mary Whitehouse's argument was that children might copy the violence they saw on TV. Back then, in 76/77, the Doctor's companion was Leela, a violent, scantily-clad savage who walked around carrying a bloody great knife and was quite happy to stab people to death with it. Don't seem to remember a knife - crime epidemic amongst youngsters back in 1977. Paradoxically, in 2020, the Doctor has Yazz, a Police officer, as her companion and out there on the streets, kids are killing each other on a daily basis. Bang goes Whitehouse's argument.
