I remember NPH’s role as Count Olaf & his character disguised as Günther. The fact that NPH did a full dance number THERE as well, just to flex how gullible the people of the City are in the ASOUE universe, was pretty astonishing! Only NPH can pull this off & just not elaborate.

I absolutely adore the "I'm so done with this shit" expression on 14's face when the Toymaker arrives. Bear in mind that earlier within the same in-universe week, 13 had been subjected to a dance routine set to Boney M's Rasputin, courtesy of The Master.
EDIT: According to a recently released excerpt of the officially licensed novelization of "The Giggle" (written by James Goss and due for release in January of 2024, alongside novelizations of the other two 60th Anniversary Specials), the 14th Doctor's adventures - from the moment he comes into being at the end of "The Power Of The Doctor", to the comic strip story "Liberation Of The Daleks" (which covers the first hour of his life, prior to the 2023 Children In Need minisode), and right on through to the end of "The Giggle" - span a grand total of 15 hours from his perspective. That just makes this whole scene even funnier.

I love how this scene perfectly straddles the line between hilarious and horrifying.
the scream of that man turned into a ball was genuinely chilling first time around, it sounded so pained and terrified.

“there is order, there is chaos, and there is play.” genuinely one of the hardest lines to ever come out of Doctor Who. the implications are incredible and deep. RTD is great at using throwaway lines to paint a cosmic picture.

This scene is hilarious but also chilling in the sense that while yes, the Toymaker looks ridiculous and wacky, the Doctor and his friends are powerless against him. They can only wait and see what will happen, with no way to save themselves, and that's terrifying.

The weeping angels are most likely in a club with blinking lights (how would they move otherwise?) and every time we see them they're frozen in successive steps of the Macarena
As funny and quirky as this is, from their perspective it's terrifying. There's nothing you can do to stop him except risk a fate worse then death against him.
A reality warping omnipotent entity, responsible for all the world's problems at the moment, comes in uninvited, starts playing omnipresent music, and your best efforts to stop results in two casualties, two injuries, a bad day for the janitor, hundreds of wasted bullets, and he never even stop lip syncing to Spice Girls, before just vanishing.

One touch I like is the editing implies that the room is warping to accomadate where he wants to be. Which means, technically, its not teleportation as hes not the one moving. The room is
the turn into balloons is probably one of the most painful ways to die because knowing the Toymaker, they still feel every aspect of their body as ballons and now each piece is so out of place they can feel their body everywhere. Not to mention the Doctor said they are dead because their bodies will pop which means they probably felt every piece of their bodies explode as each balloon popped.
That is... unbelievably terrifying.
This is probably canon, considering the fact that in Dark Water it was revealed that the dead still feel what happens to their bodies after death… so yeah it’s horrific.
@@fromthethirdplanet The dead in dark water were a part of missy's plan for the cyberman. She needed the ability to reupload the dead back into their bodies from a hard drive which explains why those specific dead people were still in touch with their bodies. I could be wrong but i don't think that applies here.
Probably not. The Toymaker loves taking captives, but he's never deliberately caused them pain. Torture just isn't any fun - where's the game in that? He only killed them because they started the fight first. Perhaps to him that was the game, and they were idiots who deserved to lose because they challenged him to a 'fight to the death' game without first assessing the capabilities of their chosen opponent.

Pretty messed up that Neil just murdered two people for the scene. Great commitment from the extras though.
That's why the Spice Girls were arrested as accessories before the fact, after the dance. They'll get their day in court, but they have no one but themselves for putting together such an unstoppable banger.

The man you know as currently being the most powerful being in the universe is literally begging you not to go near someone that literally just jumped out of thin air while dancing to the Spice Girls... something tells me that ordering your men to open fire is not the correct form of action, here...
The problem here is that to them, he looks like a regular human. He threw her against a wall, so she wanted to detain him since he was now problematic, and the soliders were simply listening to their commander.
When she finds out that he killed them, things escalate drastically. A "human" just killed two of her men, so she fights back with full force. She has no way of knowing that this is a god-like, reality-altering being because he looks and moves like a human (Weird doors and music aside which can simply be passed off as technology). She's used to fighting Daleks and Cybermen, but this is just a regular person - How hard could it be?
She only asks for help when all her actions have failed, and she knows there's nothing she can do, despite her best efforts.

Last year we had the Master dancing to Boney M while disguised as Rasputing, this year we get Neil Patrick Harris playing a cosmic horror monster that plays games and dances to the Spice Girls.
He doesn't have to do this either. the Toymaker can warp reality any which way he likes. He can just appear and be all menacing. He could've dragged everyone back to the 20s to have the final game be there. He could've taken the Doctor and Donna to 2023 himself instead of having them rush to the TARDIS to chase him. But no. He gives an ominous warning, sets them running and then decides to barge into UNIT HQ to the tune of early 2000s pop music. Just because he is the Toymaker and he can do that.

From the perspective of such an immortal, there's no such thing as murdering a human. There's just hurrying up the inevitable. Dead today, dead in fifty years of natural causes, makes no difference. Why do the silly humans get so upset about it?
Characters following this archetype will often demonstrate a commitment to games and abiding by agreed-upon rules, as a means of coping with their own power. The only challenge they can find in their endless life is by accepting the self-imposed constraints of a game.

Great description.
The creative direction for this scene was brilliant. It's one thing to have the idea but to execute it in such a successful way that doesn't make your villain look tacky is incredible. NPH performed this so incredibly convincingly, and while for the viewer, watching it is hugely entertaining...to show how absolutely useless -everyone- is in that one moment must be horrifying for the characters.
I think it also shows the viewers just WHO the Toymaker really is. Somebody who loves games...who will play them with you, whether you want to participate or not...and someone who will win...every time. (Errr, well...most every time)

Haven't seen this yet, but terrifying to see the doctor desperately yell "Don't!" Then immediatly look defeated as the guards run in is chilling. He's legitimately powerless and he knows it, hasn't happened in a looong time.
And this is after a whole horror-esque first half, I really recommend it. Fair warning, it is terrifying for the first 2/3rds, this part is actually kinda chill
@iainwmacintosh I'm still trying to find a place to watch this, and yeah it's so chill in mood but I love that element of cosmic horror? The idea that a creature just plays with your lives and the laws of physics, cause they don't matter to them, somehow seems creepier than a dalek army. From the teleporting to using a spin to get Kate, to the balloon guards, he's everything a cruel trickster god should be in just 1 scene.

I am convinced after watching this scene alone that Neil Patrick Harris would make an amazing Mr Myxzpltk (5th dimensional imp/Superman villain). Everything about this scene just resonates Mr Myxzpltk especially with the reality wrapping

Oh definitely, their headquarters was under attack and everyone was powerless to do anything against him. He was truly playing with them like it was nothing. I really hope what's to come in the next series is as crazy as this!
Honestly, he's even more horrific if you try to make sense of it. He's literally a universal force that ignores any rules of reality. You have NO way to stop him besides winning his games. I recall someone tried to hit him in an earlier incarnation and ended up hitting himself. This is a villain you cannot negotiate with other than forcing them to play a game and win, or lose with horrifying consequences.
Despite what 14 demanded as his prize, that The Toymaker is banished from reality for eternity, I think RTD was very knowing in having Kate instruct them to bury the box in salt.
She doesn’t know it but 14 invoking the salt superstition at the edge of reality is what gave him the power to come through in the first place.
They’ve left a little crack in the window for NPH, or someone else, to return to the role later.
So if the Toymaker is playing the music himself, then is this the Doctor Who version of the “Why do I hear boss music” meme?

Mainly saying this because I don’t see Michael Gough’s Toymaker doing this but along with their own realm the Toymaker can rebuild himself as well and enjoy it like hell

I know its a horrifying concept, but the shot of the screaming ball is edited so comically i laugh every time.
I think it’s also the weirdly cheap CG on the screaming face in it that adds to the dark humor.

I think the actor's scream could have been more chilling. If I was the actor, I would have asked someone to terrify me with one of my greatest fears to get the right pitch and fullness of what actually happened to the guard.

The other one quite funny a bit later after this number is when he said in response to the men on the roof where they were he said 'I think they're still falling'. And then you hear the faint thumps of bodies hitting glass and the ground below them.
Obviously it's haunting but the timing was absolutely spot on comedically that I couldn't help but burst out laughing a little.

side note: there's something genuinely unnerving about the doctor taking a step back away from the toy maker in this scene - it's such a small detail but so clever bc the doctor just doesn't do that even when you know they are probably scared they don't back away from anything and the scene is so funny/upbeat but all i can concentrate on is the obvious terror they are feeling in the face of the toy makers insanity… i swear no one does it quite like david
This brings me back to hearing Soft Cell playing on a jukebox"ipad" in the 9th Doctor's second episode, and me thinking that RTD must have wonderful taste in music and hoping to hear more songs pop up on occasional future episodes.

Dude just needs a VERY long vacation. There's another Doctor roaming the universe now, so he can take his time and unwind. Most of the time the Doctor is practically racing from problem to problem, now he can catch his breath. Maybe even get some of his old bravado back.
What if as a precaution? In case he ever lost, the toy maker, did put the master in his gold tooth but after he forced him to regenerate into him, and then locked him away in his tooth

Even just taking more than two shots to realise "Bullets will become flower petals, forget it". The fact that they failed to shoot multiple times, and then thought "You know what WILL work? BIGGER GUNS"...not thinking straight in that situation
If you think about it, this guy is scarier than the master, think about it, he can teleport from here to there in a matter of seconds, turn dangerous weapons into flowers, kill people with a simple touch, he’s basically a colourful version of death 😂

Its funny how both terrifying and hilarious this is at the same time. The campier the villain, the more terrifying they can be I suppose. He just does a dance, casually kills two men, and reduces your weaponry to flower petals.
My mom and I were singing along. Man that song brought back memories. That was an interesting choice for the episode

God I hope NPH returns some day for another episode. Absolutely phenomenal performance.
The most terrifying thing for the Doctor to have to admit at this point is that it is "fortunate" that only 2 people died, and only because they directly engaged the Toymaker. He could've easily killed everyone in that room, whimsically. The Doctor is probably counting his blessings that the death toll was as low as it was, especially given how helpless he is to help them.
With "normal" villains who follow the rules of the universe, he can try to save people, reverse whatever harm has been done to them. But the Toymaker follows a completely different set of rules from the rest of the universe, so undoing his actions might be beyond the Doctor's ability.
Good Guy Toymaker showing up with a perfect showcase of what and who he is about when The Doctor couldn't explain it very well.

Between the Toymaker's specific dance steps starting at @1:03 and the bicycle horn honking when he vanishes through the trapdoor, plus the whole omnipowered malevolent entity from the darkest part underneath the universe, there's a curious, coincidental (?) similarity to Stephen King's IT here...
(Also, NPH looks a bit like an Oompa-Loompa here, especially the hair...)

@@bandersnatch9469 It's a good episode, and used elsewhere as well, because it captures something about the essence of children. Not the happy smiling innocent child of most depictions. Real children: They are little psychopaths. Selfish, short-sighted, morally-immature little monsters who would burn down the school and everyone in it just so they could stay home and watch TV. Their destructive nature is only contained by their powerlessness - they have neither the physical strength to overcome an adult, nor the experience and cunning to commit the crimes they fantasise about. So if you give a child character real power, you've got a ready-made monster.
