- Why does the slide hold back on a handgun?
1. Easy to see that the handgun is empty
a. Keeps from dry firing
2. Easy to see that its empty for safety reasons
3. Much easier to load a full magazine
4. Easier to evaluate the feed ramp and other easily accessible parts of the handgun.

Love that he pulled out the 33 rounder for that snap cap demo... lol
Thanks for the video man, it makes sense now!
Thanks for watching! I was looking to make a video and didn't have any solid ideas. This worked out well. Thank You!
The REAL reason the slide locks back is so that you don't end up with an empty chamber after the magazine is depleted. With the slide locking back on an empty magazine, you are able to drop the mag, load a new one, release the slide, and continue shooting. Otherwise you'd end up with an empty chamber after the last round was fired and a pull of the trigger would result in "click" instead of "BANG".
Much respect with such a detailed info thank you 🙏

Thanks for a detailed explanation of this! My father knew this stuff but passed away when I was young so I didn’t have much knowledge of handguns. Too embarrassed to ask other people too. Again, thank you!
That's a very good explanation. Thank you.
Most of this seems like common sense. I don't live in a country where you can easily own guns and most of this comes off as common sense to me. I was more interested in how the slide locking mechanism works and how the lock is engaged. Any videos explaining that?
Great information. Makes mag changes faster. When you ejected that snap cap and the spent casing went rolling on the table I was like WTH
That is weird how that happened. I didn't notice it at all until you said that. Thanks for watching man!
Nice information teacher
Helluva video bro, thanks.
My Glock instructions manual says when unloading:
1. Remove the magazine by depressing MAGAZINE CATCH (19) (see photo 1).
2. Pull slide (1) back to eject the round which is in the chamber (2).
3. Check to ensure that there is no round in the chamber.
4. Allow the slide to spring forward by releasing it. Pull the trigger into the full pulled position with the pistol pointing in a safe direction.
He didn't explain why the slide lock up. There is a cut out on the lip of your magazine that is responsible for the slide lock up on an "empty" magazine the follower push that mechanism up when there is no rounds left hence pushing the spring tension slide lock upward when slide is moving forward catching that the sloth cut out on slide itself. I also saw a big no no on video operator rack the slide easing it back into battery supposedly demonstration of chqmbering a round this is the number one fault for Glove failure shooting out of battery split case or injured limbs. It is meant to to be rack let the recoil springs do its job spring I to action chqmbering that round it will not hurt the gun. Simple physics and mechanics
Hand work is like magicians dizzying fast talker
Good info and opinion......Good stuff...
Thank you sir!
Not to mention very painful Slide bites. If you need to reach in with your finger, that slide better be locked back.
Hey G&A, I've missed you and your great content. Have you seen the new Thompson Center TC 22? I've got one on the way from Brownells and there's a $50 rebate on them right now. Hope all is well with you man.
Everything is going good. Just had some changes over the last few months. All for the better. I saw that rifle. It is very tempting. I have been picking up some handguns lately. Thanks for watching and checking in!
Excellent video. Thanks for the knowledge
Nice video!
Thanks BuckBuster!
What brand is your extended magazine on your Glock?
How come all your pistols rack back so easy? Mine is killing my old arthritic hand.
A great option would be like an M&P EZ if that’s something your interested in. They are made to be very easy to rack.
@@haileywolcott7121 After lots of Ballistol w/ dummy rounds and firing a few hundred rounds through it I'm finding it to be a little easier to rack now

Really nice job explaining man
Thanks man!
*Great Job Teach*
Thanks man!
Thank you for the explanation. Would that be acceptable to leave the slide open, full mag into the gun for "just in case" situation by night stand or safe? Because I don't wanna have one in the chamber, and then have to discard the bullet (in case the bullet got shortened) when dissembling the gun for routine maintenance. You know 'cuz ammo is expensive now.
Why would the bullet get shortened if left in the chamber? You can just remove the magazine and pull the slide back it will eject the round in the chamber and it will still be usable round…
Perhaps a baseball bat is more suitable for you
Good Stuff Brother
Thanks man!
another reason you might not need every day:
it makes for a faster reload to simply release the slide with your thumb directly after inserting the fresh mag instead of racking the slide
@REDNECKS & MOONSHINETV no not at all (provided it´s a quality gun)
@REDNECKS & MOONSHINETV yeah it will be just fine, don´t worry about it :)
Great explanation 👍🏽 thank you
So, as long as a round is being loaded it doesn’t lock....if the slide is pulled and no round is loaded it locks, correct?
That is correct for the most part. There are always exceptions, but that is the way it happens for most. Thanks for watching!
How to put it back pls
liked vid, thumbed it. hatnov a new taurus gc2, ques4u. with clip in, unloaded, when i slide rack bak , it locks, but cannot retract forward, w/o releasing clip, is this normal? thanks
Yes, it is normal. The brand new spring in your magazine is stiff and it will be very difficult to use the slide release. That is your guns way of saying "EH, I am still waiting for you to feed me".
I’m new to my Glock… just curious on why it’s bad to let the slide snap forward on an empty chamber?
Same here
Why does the slide engage only on the last round? What mechanism stops it from engaging every round?
I'm new to this but I believe it's the way the plastic extension extension is manufactured on the magazine to engage the mechanism that locks the slide, he points at the extension here: 01:27 picture is out of focus but it's right there.
It depends on what you are using it for. If you use it to hold the slide open its a slide stop. If you use it to drop the slide its a slide release. Never ceases to amaze me how anal retentive gun owns can be. Just like the idiots I have argued with over the years that tell me WD will gum up a gun. They are so stupid it hurts. The only thing WD does is loosen hard to clean gunk and it will drain out to the surface and when the WD evaporates it leaves behind the crud. Its just that simple. I have used WD for years. Long term storage I use rigs grease. But day to day three in one and WD work just fine.
Does dry firing matter on center fire fed weapons?
As far as I know, typically dry firing only causes issues with rimfire weapons, not center fire ones.
didnt explain the most important reason, slide locked for new magazine fed in and continue shooting instead, of racking it manualy.
Thank you! begginer here
To me the number one reason is to let you know your mag is empty
👁👁👍
I don't think you should leave your gun laying down with the slide cocked back. It exposes the barrel to debris and dust both of which you don't want inside your guns. The barrel has oils on it and you don't want those rubbing off either.
How did my glock did not go back
What? Saturday night special?
"on an empty chamber you shouldn't do that"
the manufacturer is smarter than you, stop spreading misinformation
dude so much overkill
