- Today’s feature is a guy you may remember was supposed to step right in after Ohio State point guard D’Angleo Russell declared for the NBA draft in 2015, and run the show for the next however long they could keep the former 5 star recruit. At 6’5 Lyle is one of those players you’d say just has game. A true hooper that gets it done on the floor in many different ways, and while his numbers don’t suggest he was an on the radar NBA prospect looking back at them, if you’ve followed his story, or seen him play, you knew he had high level pro written all over him. He had size, slightly above average athleticism, could shoot it from deep, not the fastest but could find his way into the paint at will using his deceptive ball handling skills that remind me of an east coast guard like Dion Waiters, and best of all his court vision and creativity passing the ball was probably his best features. Describing this player to me would easily peak my interest, then hearing the high major college offers had after just his freshman year in high school let’s you know he was the real deal. But by the time he left high school he had de committed from at least 2 schools, had dropped from 5 to 4 stars and wouldn’t play for a full year after his 2014 high school class. Yes from a development standpoint. He chose Louisville for a reason and usually when choosing a school you got to the one that’s going to give you the best change to not only develop but display your game to elevate your draft stock. He ended up at this third option bro.. which means he didn’t wanna go there probably bec it wasn’t a good fit for him in the first place so from a development standpoint yes. Everything else no. He made few bad decisions and had injuries it’s all about opportunity and exposure.

Honestly at that time Russell was the only one on campus that was serious about his hoop future other. The rest of the guys were always partying, laying up with girls and thinking they were the kings of the world. Life hit them all pretty fast.
If you go to a school like OSU, you have to be about your business because they have all the pleasures you could think of. All the football players at that time basically went pro, they were locked in.
I try to tell these young dudes I train and mentor. If you want something in life you gotta sacrifice and be dedicated to the grind. If your not getting up early to lift/get shots up, lifting hard, doing pl work and watching film daily. They're some other kid who wants it more than you and you'll be shit out of luck.
