“He’s SHAQ Without The Hands, Handles or Footwork” Kofi Cockburn! Stunted Growth

- A true testament to where the sport has gone, and a sad reality for players like Kofi Cockburn, who for their hard work and dedication all throughout high school and college that made them top prospects and high profiled athletes, received little in return as far as NBA opportunity. For a 7 footer, mobile, high motored, dunked almost everything he touched in the paint, and as physically imposing as Kofi it leaves many surprised that never translated to NBA success like it did for the aforementioned Shaquille O’Neal. He was a standout player that did everything they tell you that should get you to the NBA level, and still that opportunity has yet to be given. He’s 24 years old now, and has been overseas since being undrafted in 2022, fighting to one day soon get that call. For these reasons, that day hasn’t yet and may never come. “He’s Shaq Without The Hands, Handles or Footwork” Kofi Cockburn! Stunted Growth

DO you think it's the responsibility of college coaches to prepare players for the next level? How does a guy like Cockburn not develop a jump shot in today's era under a coach that should've known exactly what would be and issue on the NBA level?
I think the coach does have that responsibility but only if the player asked for the help and is putting in the work.
The coach should be an aid in the players purpose.
The coach cannot cause a player to become something they are not. If you cannot shoot a mid-range shot you can work with your coach but that does not mean you can make them able.
Shaq won 4 titles, not 5.
His college coach should've been honest with him and told him the way he was going to be utilized would not be appealing to the NBA.
No, glad you made this comment cuz I was making one anyways. Even at top programs, most players aren't going to the NBA, so it's ridiculous for them to 'prepare' the two or three (tops) that are. The job is to win, the job is ALWAYS to win, no matter what level they are at.
He's having a hell of a career in the Korean Pro League. People gotta stop making it seem like just cause someone didn't make it in the NBA that their pro career was a failure.
lol nobody watches the Korean league pal
@@jimmyjames5175 that's cause you a casual with no experience in organized ball
@@karatechap555 so you’re saying I should be watching the Korean league instead of D1 ball, euro league or nba on any given night? Boy foh
@@jimmyjames5175 no, i think you shouldn't watch basketball at all. cause you a casual who thinks leagues other than the ones you mentioned aren't worth watching. you don't appreciate the sport enough to understand
Not being a pick n' roll guy with no jump shot is definitely a growth stunt.
I think even without a jumper, if he was a dominant Pick-n-Roll center as well as in the Low-Post. It would help set him up for his post work instead of having to run everything through him to be effective, and at his size his screens should be Steven Adams level
Giannis
Yup unfortunately a big that's main allure is his back to the basket game just is not a high commodity in today's NBA
Y’all sound like kids lol if he work he’ll simply dominate all that in between chyt mean nothing
You don't need a Jumper for a pick n roll... u need one for a Pick and Pop
Shaq is a FOUR time champion not five my guy...Great video...
He thought about kobe
@@user-ni4bg7ce6t lol
Such a big difference
@@user-ni4bg7ce6t it kinda is foolio..
That last name might be a Stunt Growth by itself 💀
Stop it!!!
I remember Kofi. He was a Jamaican Andre Drummond. Just born 10 years too late.
Andre Drummond is Jamaican
@@rashadbeckham7141Jamaican American
Drummond had a higher gas tank
JT, you gotta do this one. His lack of success always bothered me somehow. He was one of NYC's greatest HS basketball players. He went to Mizzou and made a name for himself but he failed in the NBA. The guy made wearing band-aids on your face cool, BEFORE Nelly. Next Stunted Growth: Derrick Chievous.
I’m 27, but bruh I don’t ever remember wearing band-aids on your face being cool💀😂
@@TerribleTake Before you time.
That’s a wild name Mr. Cockburn
ikr 😂😂😂
ikr 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Who tf names their kid cockburn
What’s good with the Jarrett Culver episode??
Texas Tech! That was my guy!
Shaqs style would still work today if they actually tried it. Someone too big to stop with an almost guaranteed bucket. U could keep feeding him with alot more promise then a 3
It’s sad nba teams just wanna shoot threes. Teams really don’t have to, that’s why people think shaq would be bad today. If they just let shaq do what he do he’d be just fine
@@InfiniteCoreXDexactly although you would have to worry about teams countering and just sendin Shaq to the line where he was notoriously below average also you'd have to worry about shaw gettin exposed on defense
His skills are more comparable with the late Yinka Dare than Shaq. Still, a big man like him should had been given a chance.
I wish 1 nba team would play old school ball. See what happens.
Big Yinka… Nets thought they had 1
@@chefgromano5025current players would get easily in foul trouble if they are asked to play old school defense.
dont dis yinka
Watched this video yesterday and wanted to mention something else. Not every player can just 'learn' to shoot or whatever else teams want, shooting and playmaking is often just as much a gift as size and athleticism, which brings me to another 'what if' player from the 2000s, Kevin Pittsnogle.
That dude was a 7 footer who was an absolutely lights out shooter, and was the leading scorer on a team that took more than 50% of their shots from 3, which was unheard of them. He went undrafted and never played in the NBA. Point is that he was 10 years too early, and that he would have been a lottery pick today, despite his anemic athleticism. Some things just change and the winners of today were the losers of yesterday.
pittsnogle had no upper strength.. like Frank kaminsky
the quality of your videos just keeps getting better and better
Shaq had only 4 rings my dude. Three with Kobe one with D Wade.
wedding ring
Cockburn he better be good with that last name bruh 😂
Before there was Westbrook or Harden, there was this man. A combination guard extraordinaire. He dominated the competition at the collegiate level while playing for Temple University under the tutelage of Coach John Chaney. He seemed to have all the tools to not only make the leap to the league but be a star. He even had his own catchy nickname. Stunted Growth: What happened to "Shakin' & Bakin'" Mark Macon?
Great video. I'm going to keep pushing for my boy Sherman Douglas.
The General? Wow! He made the league but didn't last long.
@@buzzerbeater3350 Sherm was supposed to be the real deal in the pros and just didn't stick.
Hey Stunted loving your channel last few years can you do
Sofoklis Schortsanitis
His name is the reason he wasn't drafted. He should remove the c and K from his last name. Cockburn has to be a mispronunciation leading to the misspelling.
I agree with you and the comments of many as it applies to this young man. So unfortunate that his skill set doesn't meet the time. The real elephant in the room is the fact that he could be playing football on Sundays if his people were truly visionary. I saw him play multiple times here in NYC and immediately saw an NFL PRO! He was at Illinois! He should've been on the Gridiron his Sophomore year! Would've had 4yrs of Hoops, and 3 of football. An NFL franchise would've quickly taken a chance on a physical specimen like Kofi!
Top pick in the 90's era of basketball 🏀
I think the league might going back to bigs like this especially if the Wolves or Dallas are successful this playoff. Well at least for some teams. Having a rim runner with some post and or with some paint defense I think will become more valuable. but only if the teams I mentioned have success. I think these players can give modern bigs problems with there aggressiveness body weight and skill.
i'd really like if you expanded this channel to other sports, talking about hockey, football and baseball stars who didn't pan out. also do it with coaches too like u did with mark jackson. here's some suggestions: Felix Hernández, Jakob Johnson & Sean Day.
Him and Ayo were on that Demon time in the 2021 tournament
Great programming and narrative always. Please do Stacey Augmon “the plastic” man on a well storied UNLV early 90’s basketball phenomenon
Cockburn is wild
Shaq had amazing footwork
Just cuz you don’t play in the NBA it don’t mean you’re a failure, cuz it’s pretty obvious he has talent to be on any roster, his game woulda translated better to the 90’s but still if he would dominate wherever he is playing teams gon call him up eventually. Nature test him right now
Do one for Patrick McCaw, Jerry West’s golden boy saying teams will be “sorry they didn’t take him,” won 2 chips with GS and left after he felt that he got lack of PT from the advice of his father, only to go to Toronto win another chip and still not getting PT. Been out of the league since 2021 and got deported from Belgium just recently.
Always reminded me of Norris Cole. Those guys were literally the definition of "right place at the right time". Nothing else. Pat wasn't good bc he was drafted to a dynasty that didn't need to develop him. Got rings but no skill. Same with Toronto with him and Jeremy lin. They just happened to end up with kawhi and skill and injuries gave them the perfect opportunity to win
I wanna make this argument that I feel will become popular in future years...outside of Steph and Draymond, the Warriors haven't been good at developing players (Klay too because he can only do one thing and now that he can't there's nothing)
@@troylee4196 Klay played GREAT defense during his prime. Yeah I agree besides Poole and Looney, the development is bad. LaMelo would’ve been ruined in GS.
I was in the club over the summer and seen him in there lol
“Stunt number 1: last name”
u like it..hold it for him
@@italianwaterice9594 ayo wtf you talkin about diddy??
@@vibek681 lol idk man ,, i dont wanna see it grow
I had soft spot for this kid being he’s a fellow Jamaican like myself but I knew his game would never translate to the league
It’s crazy that his coach didn’t develop him for the nba
Some college coaches are just focused on winning ball games. It’s a delicate balance between winning games and developing players to a point where it doesn’t hold back the entire program.
Teams who suck, wsh, port, hst, memphis, even the clipps could use his skills it kills me how scouts n teams copy each other n rather lose following the prototype than give themselves a chance like the magic
Portland and Memphis have good bigs already. Also who is HST?
Sounds like Houston
As an Illini fan, this one hurts
Never be another Shaquille
Rawle alkins he played for Arizona.
Tyler Hansbrough would make for a cool episode. He was such a player and personality since his freshman year. So much talent effort and hustle but it never translated to NBA success.
He did that one already.
Tyler Hansbrough was an undersized , unathletic power forward. His game didn't translate because everyone in the NBA was bigger and more athletic than him at his position .
For the record, he was an undersized center. I thought he would be another Dave Cowens but he had absolutely no jump shot.@@jacoriadams
@@buzzerbeater3350 facts , undersized , unathletic and no Jump shot is a disaster.
@@buzzerbeater3350 Too small to play center and too slow/ unathletic to play power forward in the NBA. But in college he was a Power Forward/ Center.
It still cracks me up hearing it pronounced coburn and not cockburn it just makes me think of Joe Dirt “ I pronounce it deer tay”💀😂😂
Possible vids: Charlie Ward, Alex Len, Nikola Mirotic, Desmond Mason,Fred Jones
Lakers better call this man
Shaq is a 4 time champion
He went to Illinois that’s the problem.
I was wondering where Kofi was. This is just sad!😪
Shaq is a 4x champ
Really??? I thought Shaq was ringless???
He should be in the nba.He could be a player. That come in and rebound and block shot.Off the bench
Do Javonte Smart
Jairus Lyles next please
0:36 that’s a flagrant 😂
I feel like if looney can still be a center in the league along with harry giles , I think they should have gave him a solid chance .Undrafted is wild
He also doesn't seem to be a shot blocker by any stretch. The lack of guidance from college coaches is why more and more players are opting to forgo playing for college and going overseas or to the developmental league for a year.
Need one on Eric Murdock👍🏾
Kofi was strong, but he had ZERO foot speed. He couldn't move lateral to save his life. I saw it in college that his game wouldn't translate
Man I wish things weren't like this.
that game vs loyola in 2021 expose him
This is a tough one! Maybe it wasn’t his skill set that caused him to go undrafted because it seems like even though that skill set is a relic, you can’t teach those physical attributes. It was an inability to show that his game could evolve. It sounds like he has all the attributes needed to be successful, but hasn’t figured out how to put them together or how he can evolve to fit the current game. Wish him the best!!!!
Just a different era now, it's odd to see how guys like this cannot be utilized in any capacity now.
anyone with a last name of Cockburn should be immediately fast-tracked to the league.
and be in ads with magic johnson
@@ImcognitoDre oh dear...
I remember this guy hid game was limited. He needed to work on his game. Game was different when Shaq played. With that been said Shaq work on his game and added post moves to his game.
You never miss, like game 6 Klay Thompson. He was born 30yrs too late pretty much
I’m a Wisconsin fan so I’ve got some suggestions. Ethan Happ, Sam Dekker, Alando Tucker. Heck, let’s throw Jordan Taylor in there too.
He is not even close to Shaq. Shaq would dominate todays game still
Kofi Cockburn wasn't as athletic as Shaq. But, back in the day, he still would've been a lottery pick, given his size and strength. He's Joel Embid with no jumper!
My guy never got a chance smh .....i forgot bout him .....he was a baller in college
How do you get Shaq's CV wrong? I don't even follow anymore but I still know everyone in the top 20's Chips, MVPs, and FMVPs. Rookie mistake.
what else is left?
He should have stayed for his senior year, he needed an additional year of development.
The fact that this man's style didn't fit the league to be drafted shows how much basketball has changed in the NBA for the worst. It's why I had completely stopped watching it. The league was much more enjoyable to watch back then that would have suited Cockburn well with his style.
That’s sad
For him to go undrafted as a first team all American is one of those things where i think teams that would have drafted him late 1st round got scared because they saw teams that should have taken a shot at him pass. Most 2nd rounders dont make the team so for no team to kick the tires is weird
Crazy last name 😂
It sad that High school, AAu,College don't develop these playersNoing that he need to work on skills to make nba.All they care of what the player could do for them.Instead of working on his skills sit.
Dude should consider tight end
In friendly conversations, I always feel this way. If your taller than 6 ft 8, and the NBA doesn't want you, go catch the rock! Imagine wemby as a reciever? As long as you have time you can just lob everything. They gotta make a height restriction😂
Illini fan here. I used to blame Brad Underwood and the rest of the coaching staff for not developing Kofi. But after seeing how Ayo Dosunmu and now Terrance Shannon Jr developed themselves into NBA players under coach Underwood, I think the main reason lies with Kofi himself. After entering the NBA draft twice, Kofi knew exactly what areas of his game he needed to improve on. The fact that we saw no improvements showed that Kofi lacked the motivation and hunger that Ayo and Terrance had. IMO, he doesn't like playing basketball. Hw grew up playing soccer and that was his favorite sport. He only stuck with basketball b/c he had no choice as he was too big and tall to play soccer.
With a name like his, he for sure was destined to bust…
It’s too bad he didn’t get a shot at the NBA. Despite this, he can still make a fortune playing ball overseas. Potentially much more than the average person around the world could ever make in their lifetime.
He should still strive for the NBA since that is his dream, but the consolation prize is still a fruitful career and a lot of money.
I was the first to ask you years ago so dont say know one else😂😅
Ain't no ways in spite Kofi shouldn't have been drafted! They don't want big strong 5 Men battling in the paint anymore! They want Euroleague .
Jabari Smith Sr?
The NBA is all about copy and paste type players. Players that can bring something different to the game aren’t really wanted.
Pretty much atp. Part of what points to the reason why the game is boring for average fans bc it’s basically a glorified 3-point shootout
its d nba commissioner who changed d game
Can you do one on former lottery pick Patrick O’Bryant
Do Luther Head
Crazy the warriors ain’t give him a shot
It's the Curry Revolution, not "small ball". Curry and GSW made EVERY one dimensional player, whether John Stockton or Shaq, obsolete or near obsolete. This kid is a prototype of the one-dimensional player who only has size. He's stiff too and not very fast which makes things even more difficult. But hell, at least he got a free American education.
he can still play in the league..every team need defense and rebounding
For those commenting on the name, just know that the Browns once had a Ben(jamin) Gay at RB/KR. True story: the (then-)Redskins hosted the Browns in a preseason game when I was 12. The guys beside me were *ROLLING* every time the announcer called his name.
Kofi would make a killing in wwe just saying
Pick & Roll is hard when you can't catch & shoot, and you don't have a fundamental handle to get to your counters to good defense. You're just out there setting picks.
No stunted growth series is complete without Earl Manigault
I saw him play a few years back with Cole Anthony at Oak Hill. He wasn’t good back then.
Yinka Dare’s story would be cool kind of similar story he died young.
Another viral basketball player but when it goes to NBA he will just like a normal guy
co - burn? u mean cockburn lol
Bobb'e J. Thompson should be next
His last name stunted his stock too.
Jahlil Okakor 2.0; same unfortunate story. Big man with great skills but the game is not for his style.
Okafor had a polished post game. Kofi skills were raw
He was no Shaq he was like Thomas Robinson he would disappear from time to time
I'm sure nobody had the balls to make fun of his name 😁
You have to be 7 feet tall and full of muscle to have a name like that.
I don't have a death wish
